Winston Teen Dies Following South Umpqua River Emergency
A 14-year-old boy died Thursday after going underwater in the South Umpqua River near Riverbend Park in Winston. Police said there is no indication of foul play, and counselors will be available Friday for those needing support.
A Thursday afternoon call for help along the South Umpqua River ended in tragedy after a 14-year-old boy was pulled from the water near Riverbend Park in Winston.
Winston Police said dispatchers were contacted shortly after 5:20 p.m. when the teen disappeared beneath the water and could not be found. Emergency personnel from multiple agencies responded to the area and began rescue efforts along the river.
The boy was later located in the water and taken by ambulance to CHI Mercy Medical Center. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Police said the case remains under investigation by the Winston Police Department. Officials said they have not found anything at this time suggesting foul play.
Because the victim was a juvenile, and out of respect for his family, his name is not being released.
The response brought together several agencies, including Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and Adapt Integrated Health Care.
In the aftermath of the incident, Lieutenant Ralph Stiffler said counselors will be available Friday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Winston Community Center for anyone who needs help processing what happened.
The Winston Police Department said its thoughts are with the teen’s family, friends and loved ones as they grieve.
