Rockhounds, collectors and curious families will have a chance to dig into the region’s geology when the Umpqua Gem Show returns to Roseburg on May 2-3 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The 54th annual show is presented by the Umpqua Gem & Mineral Club and will be held in Douglas Hall at 2110 SW Frear St.

According to the event website, this year’s show will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 2, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 3. Organizers describe it as a family-friendly event featuring 29 rock and gem vendors, along with displays, demonstrations, fluorescing rocks, raffles, a silent auction and activities for kids, including rock hunts.

The club’s website says visitors can expect aisles filled with rocks, minerals, fossils, crystals, jewelry and lapidary art from vendors and collectors across the region. It also highlights Oregon materials such as agates, jaspers, obsidian and petrified wood, alongside hand-crafted pieces and specialty mineral finds.

Among the attention-grabbing local finds promoted for the show is Douglas County carnelian, known for its rich iron color, glowing translucency and, in some pieces, crystal-lined centers formed in ancient volcanic pockets.

Vendor listings on the club’s website show a mix of businesses and makers from Roseburg, Winston, Oakland, Grants Pass, Medford, Jacksonville, Klamath Falls, Reedsport and beyond, underscoring the show’s draw for both local collectors and regional exhibitors.

The event is geared toward kids, families and gem and mineral collectors alike, with organizers encouraging visitors to come learn something new while exploring the wide range of specimens and displays on hand.
