ROSEBURG, Ore. - Author and Umpqua Community College instructor B. R. Lewis will discuss his writing and read from his short story collection, “A Certain Kind of Luck,” during an Oct. 28 event at UCC.
UCC’s Sue Shaffer Learning Commons & Library and Roseburg Public Library are hosting “An Evening with Author B. R. Lewis” from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the learning commons and library.
The presentation will include a discussion of Lewis’s writing journey, readings from the collection, and an audience question-and-answer session. A book signing will follow, with a limited number of copies available for purchase.
“A Certain Kind of Luck” brings together 14 stories set across several generations in the Pacific Northwest. Its characters face strained family relationships, economic uncertainty, trauma, and injustice while weighing their responsibilities to others against their own needs.
Among them are a young married couple dealing with jealousy, financial pressures, and unplanned parenthood, and a Yakama mechanic questioning why he is rebuilding a fishing platform on a river with no salmon. The collection’s settings range from Camas, Washington, to Roseburg, with rivers and rural communities shaping the lives of its characters.
Lewis was born in Portland and raised in Camas. He graduated from Western Washington University and earned a Master of Fine Arts at Eastern Washington University’s Inland Northwest Center for Writers in Spokane.
He also completed AmeriCorps service terms in Sitka, Alaska, and Vancouver, Washington, and served as an editor for the literary journals “Willow Springs” and “Sundog Lit.” He now lives in southern Oregon and teaches at UCC.
