Steamboat Road Travelers Should Expect Full Closures During Geotechnical Work

Travelers using Steamboat Road should plan for full closures today and tomorrow as crews continue geotechnical work tied to a future road project.

The work is taking place on National Forest System Road 38, also known as Steamboat Road. The geotechnical investigation began May 19 and is expected to continue through May 28. The project involves a truck-mounted drill rig being positioned along the roadway so crews can collect soil and rock samples beneath the road surface.

The information gathered will help inform the design of future improvements to the forest road.

Delays and closures are expected while the work is underway. During full closures, travelers will need to use alternate routes to reach Forest Service lands beyond the closure area.

The tentative schedule includes:

  • Tuesday, May 26: Full closure at milepost 20.8.
  • Wednesday, May 27 through Thursday, May 28: Full closures during business hours at mileposts 3.61 and 3.67. Equipment is expected to be moved in the evenings.

Officials thanked the public for their patience while work continues to improve forest infrastructure.
