Roseburg Public Library Summer Reading Program Opens June 1
Roseburg Public Library’s free Summer Reading Program begins June 1, offering reading challenges, prizes, youth activities, StoryWalks, craft kits, Harry Potter Day and adult reading games through Aug. 22.
Roseburg Public Library is preparing to launch its Summer Reading Program, giving children, teens and adults a chance to read, take part in activities and earn prizes throughout the summer.
The free program begins Monday, June 1, and runs through Saturday, Aug. 22. It is open to local readers of all ages, and participants do not need a Roseburg Public Library card to join.
For younger readers, from birth through high school graduation, the program will center on tracking reading time. Children and teens can log the minutes they read, or the time someone reads to them. For every seven hours completed, participants can choose a new book and three treasure chest prizes.
Those who finish the full log, which totals 21 hours of reading, will be entered into a grand prize drawing for a $150 Barnes & Noble gift card. The library plans to award three grand prizes.
Youth participants also can submit book reviews during the program for additional chances to win prizes on display in the library’s lobby.
The library also has a full schedule of summer activities planned for children and teens. A StoryWalk® will be available at parks around Roseburg from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday during the program. Grab-and-go craft kits will be available at the library on a first-come, first-served basis at 10 a.m. every Tuesday beginning June 2.
Preschool Storytime with Youth Services Librarian Aurora Ropp will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays from June 3 through Aug. 19 at the Stewart Park Pavilion.
Beginning June 16, children in pre-K through fifth grade can attend a weekly Tuesday activity or special performance at 1 p.m. at the library. Starting June 18, students entering sixth through 12th grade are invited to Thursday activities from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the library.
One of the summer highlights will be the library’s sixth annual Harry Potter Day, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 25. The event will include wizarding crafts, Harry Potter trivia, prizes and an 11 a.m. musical performance by Tonks from Tonks and the Aurors. A raffle for attendees 18 and younger will include a Harry Potter quilt, with the winner required to be present for the noon drawing.
Adults also have their own summer challenge. The library is offering Summer Reading Op-oly, a board game-style program featuring reading prompts and activities. Adult participants can earn free books and enter to win a $150 gift certificate to Sherm’s Thunderbird Market.
Adults may also submit book reviews for a chance to win a $50 gift card to one of four Roseburg businesses: Bagel Tree Café & Bakeshop, Fox and Fable Bookshop, While Away Books and Yours Truly Bookshop.
Reading logs and forms will be available online Sunday, May 31, and at the library Tuesday, June 2. More details are available at roseburgpubliclibrary.org.
Major sponsors of this year’s Summer Reading Program include Barb Coen, Douglas County Cultural Coalition, Friends of the Roseburg Public Library, the State Library of Oregon, and Karen and Jon Wittwer.
