Roseburg Police Add Extra Traffic Patrols Through September

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Drivers in Roseburg can expect to see additional police patrols on local roads through the end of September as officers increase enforcement of several common traffic violations.

The Roseburg Police Department said the extra patrols will focus on seat belt use, distracted driving, speeding and driving under the influence. The enforcement effort will continue throughout the remaining days of August and through the end of September.

Funding for the additional patrols is being provided through grants from Oregon Impact and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Police said seat belts remain one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious injury or death during a crash. Officers are also reminding adults that their driving habits can influence younger passengers, who may be less likely to buckle up if they regularly see others riding without a seat belt.

Distracted driving will also be a major focus of the enforcement campaign. Activities such as using a cellphone, sending messages or taking attention away from the road can put drivers, passengers, pedestrians and others at risk.

National distracted driving prevention efforts use a combination of enforcement, education, legislation and public awareness campaigns to encourage drivers to keep their attention on the road.

Roseburg police said motorists should watch for additional targeted enforcement campaigns during the next two months.
