Roseburg Fire Department Member to Receive State Golden Sparky Award

A member of the Roseburg Fire Department will be honored this week with one of the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s highest awards.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal is scheduled to present the Golden Sparky Award at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, at the Roseburg Fire Department’s Umpqua Room, located downstairs at 700 SE Douglas Avenue.

This year’s recipient is being recognized for work focused on community risk reduction and public safety outreach in Roseburg. According to the Oregon State Fire Marshal, local data showed that 40% of households in the community included someone with a disability. That finding helped guide efforts to better reach residents who may face added risks during a fire or emergency.

The awardee helped build and strengthen partnerships with the Umpqua Valley disAbilities Network and the Aging and Disability Resource Connection. Those partnerships expanded fire safety education and support for at-risk community members, including people with disabilities and older adults.

The Golden Sparky Award has been presented since 1977 and recognizes a fire service member or fire agency for outstanding achievements in fire prevention or public safety education.

The presentation will take place during a media advisory event in Roseburg.
