Rescue Crews Pull Injured Man From North Umpqua River Near Toketee Falls
Rescue crews used a rope system to lift an injured 20-year-old man from the North Umpqua River near Toketee Falls after a roughly 60-foot jump left him with a dislocated shoulder.
TOKETEE, Ore. - Rescue crews used a rope system to lift an injured man from the North Umpqua River on Friday after he jumped about 60 feet into the water near Toketee Falls.
Douglas County emergency dispatchers received a report of an injured person at about 10:30 a.m. on July 17.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, 20-year-old Angel Antonio Ceja of Oahu, Hawaii, was traveling with a friend and visiting locations where he could record cliff-jumping videos to post online.
Ceja had reportedly watched videos of other people jumping from a large log suspended approximately 60 feet above the river, about 200 feet upstream from Toketee Falls. He then attempted the jump himself.
Ceja dislocated his right shoulder when he struck the water. He was able to get out of the river by pulling himself onto a partially submerged log and then onto a small rock shelf, but he could not climb back to the trail.
Crews established a steep-angle rope rescue system and raised Ceja from the gorge in a rescue litter. After reaching the trail, he was able to walk the remaining distance to a waiting ambulance.
Ceja was transported to Mercy Medical Center for treatment.
The rescue involved personnel from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Glide Rural Fire Protection District, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and Umpqua Valley Ambulance.
