Sutherlin’s historic locomotive whistle has been recovered in Redding, California. Police said witnesses who saw an earlier public appeal provided information that helped officers locate the stolen whistle.
SUTHERLIN, Ore. - A historic steam whistle stolen from Sutherlin’s park locomotive has been recovered in Redding, California, after witnesses provided information to police.
The whistle was cut from the city’s 1921 Cooke oil-fired steam locomotive on September 15, according to the Sutherlin Police Department.
Captain Dennis Chrisenbery said witnesses in Redding came forward after seeing the department’s earlier press release seeking help with the case. Their information gave investigators a lead on the missing whistle.
Sutherlin police shared that information with the Redding Police Department, whose officers located and recovered it.
Chrisenbery thanked Redding police for their assistance and work on the investigation.
The recovery follows a public appeal to help locate the stolen piece of Sutherlin’s railroad history. Police credited information from people who saw that appeal with helping bring the search to a successful end.
