Prescribed Burn Planned Near Long Prairie on Tiller Ranger District

Fire crews plan to begin a prescribed burn Monday, October 5, on the Tiller Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest, with burning potentially continuing through the weekend if conditions allow.

The planned burn is in Unit 710 at Long Prairie, along National Forest Service Road 3201-300, west of Threehorn Campground. Forest officials said favorable weather and fuel conditions are providing an opportunity to conduct the work, though crews will assess weather, conditions on the ground, and smoke impacts before proceeding.

A closure around the burn area will be in place for firefighter and public safety. The Forest Service listed the following access points as closed:

  • The NFSR 32-300 junction.
  • The NFSR 600-620 junction.
  • The NFSR 300-330 junction at Diamond Rock.
  • The NFSR 1616-205 junction.

The burn is being conducted in partnership with the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, Oregon Department of Forestry, Douglas Forest Protective Association, and Tiller Volunteer Fire Department.

Smoke may be visible from surrounding areas during and after the burn. Officials ask people not to call 911 to report smoke associated with the planned operation.

Prescribed burning is conducted under monitored conditions to meet forest management and fuel reduction objectives. People traveling near the area should use caution and watch for fire personnel and equipment.
