Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California National Weather Service Medford, OR | 124 AM PDT Wed Sep 9 2026

Gusty winds and dry daytime humidities expected east of the Cascades Thursday and possible again on Friday.
Very warm and dry conditions expected today. Moderate to locally poor ridge top humidity recoveries are expected through early Thursday. A shortwave trough to the north will allow for slightly less warm temperatures Thursday. Gusty winds and low humidities east of the Cascades will result in elevated fire weather concerns Thursday afternoon. Saturday, a low will bring chances for rain shower to the area and low chances for thunderstorms from the Cascades west. Gusty winds are expected east of the Cascades but humidities will trend higher. Dry weather and mild temperatures expected Sunday.

DFPA Protected Lands

US Forest Service - Umpqua National Forest

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Samuel Denney, a candidate for Roseburg City Council Ward 3, will host a public town hall from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at the Umpqua Valley Arts Center.

The casual question-and-answer event will give community members an opportunity to learn more about Denney and discuss local issues and collaboration with residents and community leaders.

The Umpqua Valley Arts Center is located at 1624 W. Harvard Ave. in Roseburg.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - Firefighters responded to five small fires across Douglas County during and after the Labor Day weekend, including four sparked by lightning, according to the Douglas Forest Protective Association.

The fires followed two lightning storms that moved through southern Douglas County on the evening of Sept. 5 and the morning of Sept. 6. Despite recent rainfall, DFPA said conditions remained capable of supporting fire activity.

Crews from DFPA and several rural fire departments responded to the fires:

• Tunnel Fire near Glendale: Firefighters responded to Withycombe Grade Road shortly before 7:50 p.m. Saturday and found a lightning-caused vegetation fire measuring about 1/100th of an acre. The fire was extinguished and officially contained after three checks found no remaining heat or smoke.
• Gravel Pit Fire near Riddle: DFPA and the Riddle Fire Protection District responded to Gravel Pit Lane shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday. The lightning-caused fire was knocked down and mopped up before being placed in patrol status.
• Packard Gulch Fire near Days Creek: Crews responded Sunday afternoon to an area about 1.5 miles northwest of Tiller Trail Highway. A lightning-struck tree had spread fire to about 1/100th of an acre of vegetation. The fire was lined and mopped up and remained in patrol status Tuesday pending one additional check.
• Canyon Creek Fire near Canyonville: Firefighters responded Monday afternoon to smoke about four-tenths of a mile west of Interstate 5 near milepost 96. They found a lightning-struck tree and a vegetation fire measuring approximately 1/100th of an acre. DFPA reported Tuesday that mop-up work was about 80% complete.
• Pass Creek Fire near Curtin: DFPA and North Douglas County Fire & EMS responded shortly after 7 a.m. Tuesday to a natural-cover fire near railroad tracks west of southbound Interstate 5 near milepost 166.5. Firefighters stopped the forward spread of the 1/100th-acre fire before DFPA completed mop-up work. The cause remained under investigation.

No homes or other structures were threatened by any of the fires.

DFPA said the activity serves as a reminder that fire season remains in effect despite recent precipitation. Restrictions on public and industrial activities will increase at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Debris burning remains prohibited.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - Fire restrictions will increase across lands protected by the Douglas Forest Protective Association as warmer temperatures and lower relative humidity raise fire danger in the region.

Moderate Public Use Restrictions and Industrial Fire Precaution Level 2 will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9.

The public use restrictions apply to private, county, state and Bureau of Indian Affairs lands within the Douglas District.

Under the Moderate restriction level, the following activities are only permitted before 1 p.m. or after 8 p.m.:

• Using non-industrial power saws
• Cutting, grinding or welding metal
• Cutting, trimming or mowing dried or cured grass
• Operating power-driven machinery for non-industrial property improvements or development on private lands

Motor vehicles, motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles are limited to improved roads that are free of flammable vegetation. An exception applies to vehicles used for cultivating and harvesting agricultural crops.

Vehicles traveling on forestlands must carry an axe, a shovel and either one gallon of water or a fire extinguisher weighing at least 2.5 pounds. ATVs must carry an ABC fire extinguisher weighing at least 2.5 pounds.

All other off-road driving is prohibited.

IFPL Level 2 will apply in regulated use areas DG-1, DG-2, UA-1 and UA-2, along with forestlands within one-eighth mile of those areas. This includes lands managed by the Roseburg District Bureau of Land Management.

Under IFPL Level 2, several industrial activities may only take place between 8 p.m. and 1 p.m. Those activities include:

• Operating power saws, except at loading sites
• Using feller-bunchers with rotary-head saws
• Cable yarding
• Blasting
• Welding, cutting or grinding metal

DFPA is asking residents and visitors to check current restrictions before heading outdoors and to use caution with any activity that could produce sparks or heat near dry vegetation.

RIDDLE, Ore. - Riddle Elementary School will remain closed Wednesday and Thursday as the district responds to continued bat activity inside the building.

In a message to families, Riddle School District said the closure will allow time for a thorough inspection of the school and for necessary cleaning and bat-removal work to be completed.

District staff are working with the Douglas Public Health Network, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and a professional bat specialist while determining the appropriate next steps.

“The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority,” the district said.

Students were initially sent home Friday, Sept. 4, after bats were discovered inside the school. The district later announced that classes would resume Tuesday following cleaning of the affected areas, but additional bat activity prompted the two-day closure.

The district has not reported that any bats found at the school tested positive for rabies.

Families are expected to receive another update Thursday afternoon regarding the district’s progress and plans for reopening the school.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Wednesday could be Roseburg’s final 90-degree day of the year as a significant cooling trend approaches Southern Oregon.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for sunny skies and a high near 93 degrees Wednesday. Temperatures are then expected to fall steadily, with a high near 85 Thursday and 76 Friday.

A low-pressure system will bring a more dramatic change Saturday. Rain is likely before 11 a.m., followed by showers and a possible thunderstorm during the afternoon. Saturday’s high is forecast to reach only 65 degrees, with a 70% chance of precipitation. Rainfall amounts between one-tenth and one-quarter of an inch are possible, with higher amounts in thunderstorms.

Dry weather is expected to return Sunday, but temperatures will remain mild. Roseburg is forecast to reach 72 Sunday, followed by highs near 76 Monday and Tuesday next week.

Although another stretch of hot weather later this month cannot be ruled out, the current forecast shows no additional 90-degree days. If that outlook holds, Wednesday could mark Roseburg’s final day in the 90s this year.
