Seasonable temperatures and dry weather will continue through the middle of the week, with good overnight recoveries in the valleys. A weak front will pass through the area late Thursday into Friday, bringing decent chances for rain across areas west of the Cascades. There is a chance for light rain over eastside areas, but the breezy wind speeds and low RH will be the more notable story, which will lead to elevated fire weather conditions. Below normal temperatures and improved humidities are expected Friday through the weekend.

Dr. Andrea Gray, a Umpqua Community College alumna and longtime Douglas County community member, has joined the UCC Foundation Board of Directors.

Gray attended UCC from 1987 to 1989 and owns Andrea V. Gray, MD, PC. According to the foundation, she has served on local committees and nonprofit boards and brings experience in fundraising, sponsorship development, volunteer leadership, and community engagement.

The foundation raises money for student scholarships and other efforts that support the college. Gray said she is enthusiastic about UCC’s direction and looks forward to helping expand opportunities for students and the community.

The foundation accepts board applications year-round and reviews them each March.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A close-up photo of something in a Roseburg park will be the starting point for a three-week fall activity for local kids.

Roseburg Parks and Recreation’s free “I Spy Fall” challenge begins Thursday, Oct. 1. Each week, the city will post a new photo clue. Children 12 and under can use it to figure out the park location, go there to take a selfie, and submit their photo for a chance to win a basket of fall favorites. The prize includes admission to Wildlife Safari’s Zoobilee.

The activity runs for three weeks:

• Week 1: Oct. 1–7
• Week 2: Oct. 8–14
• Week 3: Oct. 15–21

Clues and submission links will appear each Thursday morning on the Roseburg Parks and Recreation Facebook page and the city’s Parks and Recreation webpage. Families have until dusk the following Wednesday to submit their photo.

The city will draw one winner each Thursday morning, contact the winner, and arrange for the prize to be picked up at City Hall. Each child may enter once per week and can take part in all three rounds. More than one child may appear in a photo, but only one prize will be awarded for that submission.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Roseburg business owner and licensed real estate broker David Bolhuis has announced his candidacy for mayor in the November 2026 election.

Bolhuis completed his mayoral filing Aug. 25, according to the City of Roseburg’s 2026 election information. He is one of three candidates currently listed for mayor in the Nov. 3 general election. City records show he previously filed for the Ward 4 City Council position before withdrawing that filing.

In a statement announcing his campaign, Bolhuis said his work with residents across Roseburg helped motivate him to seek the position. He said those experiences exposed him to the community’s successes as well as the challenges facing many residents.

Bolhuis described his approach to public service as one centered on “service, duty, and being proactive.” He said stronger communication, cooperation, and transparency would be priorities of his administration.

From Beaverton to Roseburg

Bolhuis was born and raised in Beaverton and graduated from Beaverton High School in 2011. He later attended Grand Valley State University in Michigan, where he played college football and earned degrees in history and archaeology.

After graduation, Bolhuis worked at an auto parts manufacturing plant before training as an appraiser under his father. During his apprenticeship, he helped operate and coach a middle school football program in Culver.

Bolhuis later established his own business and became a licensed broker. He said he and his wife chose Roseburg as the community where they wanted to establish permanent roots and raise their family after visiting the area several times.

His work has included restoring older homes throughout Douglas County. Bolhuis said his real estate experience has allowed him to work closely with local neighborhoods, property owners, and professionals from a variety of industries.

He said those interactions gave him a closer look at the daily concerns facing residents and ultimately encouraged him to pursue public office.

Communication and Transparency

Bolhuis said his primary objective as mayor would be improving communication between city government and Roseburg residents.

He believes some city decisions have been difficult for the public to understand or have not been adequately explained. Bolhuis said he would work to remain accessible to residents, listen to concerns, and improve transparency within city government.

Drawing from his experiences in athletics, coaching, and business, Bolhuis said “communication and cooperation are crucial” when navigating complicated situations and making difficult decisions.

Five Campaign Priorities

Bolhuis identified five primary areas he intends to focus on if elected:

• Address homelessness in downtown Roseburg and work toward long-term solutions.
• Invest additional resources in downtown and existing local businesses, including addressing parking and enforcement concerns.
• Attract employers from a broader range of industries to expand local employment opportunities.
• Maintain existing parks, pathways, and public spaces while exploring opportunities to open new ones.
• Invest in infrastructure and Roseburg’s long-term quality of life, including responsible management of public funds and the development of a waterfront district using the existing Pine Street Overlay.

Bolhuis acknowledged that the issues would require significant time, cooperation, and sustained effort. He said addressing them would be necessary for Roseburg to reach what he believes is its full potential.

Despite the challenges he sees, Bolhuis said his campaign is rooted in his appreciation for the community.

“Roseburg is still an incredible city,” Bolhuis said, adding that serving as mayor would be an honor.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Ferb’s Dry Cleaning will remain open under new ownership and move next door in downtown Roseburg, reversing an earlier announcement that the business would close in December.

Ferb’s currently operates at 509 Southeast Jackson Street, with its dry cleaning storefront accessible from Southeast Main Street. Beginning in December, the service will operate through Chic Boutique and Day Spa at 517 Southeast Jackson Street.

According to an announcement shared by the businesses, Ferb’s will change ownership to Jamie Maneha, owner of Chic Boutique and Day Spa, effective Dec. 1.

Ferb’s accepts clothing in Roseburg and transports it to the Eugene area for dry cleaning before returning the items for customer pickup. Chic Boutique already provides alterations, pressing, and steaming in-house, allowing some services to be completed locally.

Ferb’s will continue operating at its current location through Nov. 21 before closing for Thanksgiving week. Pickups and drop-offs at Chic Boutique will begin Dec. 2.

Customers will be able to pick up dry cleaning from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Drop-offs will be accepted seven days a week during Chic Boutique’s regular business hours.

The current owner said the transition will allow the dry cleaning service to continue serving Roseburg while adding services already offered by Chic Boutique.

NEWPORT, Ore. - The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a pilot whose aircraft crashed into the Pacific Ocean near the Yaquina Head Lighthouse on Monday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received a report at 12:54 p.m. that a Beechcraft B95 had crashed offshore.

The Coast Guard immediately launched a coordinated search involving two 47-foot motor lifeboats from Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Facility Newport.

Newport Police, Newport Fire, and Good Samaritan vessels also assisted with the response.

Crews searched approximately 124 square miles over 12 hours but did not locate the pilot, identified by the Coast Guard only as a 78-year-old man. Responders reported that the aircraft entered the water at a high rate of speed and sank.

“Suspending an active search is an incredibly difficult decision, and it is one we never make lightly,” said Lt. Nick Torres, search and rescue mission commander for Sector Columbia River. “Our hearts go out to the pilot’s family and loved ones during this devastating time.”

The Coast Guard did not release additional information about the pilot or what may have caused the crash.

When a disaster happens, neighbors may be the first people able to help one another. During National Community Emergency Response Team Week, Sept. 20-26, the Oregon Department of Emergency Management is recognizing the volunteers who train for that role and encouraging more residents to get involved.

Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, volunteers learn basic skills that can help them act safely while professional responders handle the most urgent calls. Training covers disaster medical operations, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, and team organization. Depending on the needs of their local program, volunteers may also help at emergency operations centers, manage traffic or crowds, and share preparedness information at community events.

Oregon has more than 50 active CERT programs, each organized locally with a sponsoring agency such as a fire department, city, or emergency management office. Programs can serve neighborhoods, workplaces, campuses, and teens.

The week’s theme, “Carrying the Torch: 40 Years & Beyond,” marks the program’s 40th anniversary. Oregon emergency officials say the work extends beyond responding to disasters: CERT members also take part in exercises and help their neighbors prepare in advance. More than 60 CERT volunteers serve as coordinators for the state’s Be 2 Weeks Ready program.

Residents interested in training or volunteering can use the state’s CERT program page to look for a team in their area. Douglas County residents can also find local preparedness information through Douglas County Emergency Management. The state’s CERT page lists community.preparedness@oem.oregon.gov for questions about a program or starting a team.
