Seasonable temperatures and dry weather will continue through middle parts of this week. Good overnight recoveries are expected in the valleys. There is a modest chance of rain Thursday night into Friday as a trough develops over the Pacific Northwest. Temperatures will trend cooler by Friday afternoon and evening and continue through the weekend.

Roseburg mayoral candidate Steve Loosley is inviting residents to share their questions, concerns and ideas during a community forum later this month.

The forum will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the Ford Room at the Roseburg Public Library. The event will offer an informal setting for residents and business owners to speak directly with Loosley about Roseburg and the issues facing the community.

“Effective leadership starts with listening,” Loosley said in the event announcement. “I want to put the issues on the table, hear diverse perspectives, and work together toward real solutions.”

Discussion may include public safety, economic development, housing and community well-being. Attendees will also be able to ask Loosley questions and share what they would like to see addressed in Roseburg.

The campaign-hosted forum is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The Roseburg Public Library is located at 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - The Oregon Nurses Association has endorsed Samuel Denney in the race for Roseburg City Council Ward 3, Position 1, according to a release provided to The Roseburg Receiver.

The release said ONA represents more than 25,000 frontline healthcare professionals across Oregon, including more than 400 people who live or work in Roseburg.

Denney is a registered nurse, ONA member and longtime Roseburg-area resident. He has worked in Mercy Medical Center’s Emergency Department for more than a decade and currently serves as a director of operations with Adapt Integrated Health Care, where he oversees two opioid treatment programs.

“I am incredibly honored to receive the endorsement of the Oregon Nurses Association,” Denney said. “As a nurse, I have spent my career caring for people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.”

Denney said nursing has taught him the importance of listening, teamwork and taking action when people need help. He said those are the same values he would bring to the City Council.

Farrah Kuenzi, treasurer of the ONA bargaining unit at Mercy Medical Center, said the organization was proud to endorse Denney.

“As an ER nurse, he has spent his career meeting with and caring for Roseburg families, giving him firsthand knowledge of the challenges facing our community and the steps we can take to address them,” Kuenzi said. “He will bring extraordinary knowledge, commitment and compassion to our City Council and will fight to prioritize the services and care our community needs.”

According to his campaign, Denney’s healthcare experience has shaped his understanding of issues involving homelessness, substance use, behavioral health and public safety.

His campaign priorities include addressing homelessness and substance use, supporting efforts to address police staffing, responsibly managing city resources, investing in infrastructure and encouraging local business and economic growth.

Denney was born and raised in the Roseburg area and graduated from Douglas High School. He earned a nursing degree from Umpqua Community College, a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Oregon Health & Science University and a master’s degree in nursing administration and business leadership from Capella University, according to the release.

He also serves on the Roseburg Parks and Recreation Commission and participates in local community organizations.

Denney is running for Ward 3, Position 1, representing southwest Roseburg. The election is Nov. 3.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - The first of two Roseburg Fall Swift Watch gatherings was held Friday evening near the Clay Place chimney in Stewart Park, bringing community members together during the annual migration of Vaux’s Swifts through the Umpqua Valley.

The event was organized by the Umpqua Bird Alliance in partnership with Roseburg Parks and Recreation. Visitors gathered in the Fir Grove section of the park as daylight faded to watch the sky near the chimney, a longtime roosting location for migrating swifts.

A second gathering is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, off Harvard Avenue behind the Umpqua Valley Arts Center.

Local musicians also performed during the gathering, providing live music as attendees watched the sky near the Clay Place chimney.

Vaux’s Swifts are small, dark birds known for their rapid flight and long, curved wings. The birds spend much of their lives in the air and cannot perch on horizontal surfaces like most other birds. Instead, they cling vertically to surfaces inside hollow trees and chimneys when resting.

During their fall migration, the birds gather at communal roosts before continuing south toward wintering areas in Mexico and Central America. Older masonry chimneys have become important substitutes for the large, hollow trees that traditionally provided places for the birds to rest.

The Clay Place chimney is among the locations monitored through Vaux’s Happening, a community-science project that tracks swift migration along the Pacific Flyway. Volunteers submit observations and counts that help document population trends and identify important roosting sites.

According to Vaux’s Happening, the project has documented more than 140 roosts and recorded more than 31 million swift observations during 19 years of monitoring.

Umpqua Bird Alliance members participate in that broader data-collection effort during the Roseburg migration. The organization says the local migration generally peaks in mid- to late September, although the number of birds present can vary from night to night.

Weather permitting, the Swifts Sisters and Friends will perform Americana music during the Sept. 25 gathering. Alliance members will also provide information about Vaux’s Swifts, birdwatching and the region’s natural environment.

A three-by-five-foot linocut of the Umpqua River printed with a steamroller Saturday does more than create a picture on paper. When viewed through a phone or tablet, the artwork becomes an interactive experience featuring words spoken in Takelma.

The work, titled “How Important Is It?,” was created by Corvallis large-format printmaker Keith Van Norman for Umpqua Valley Arts’ Steamroller Big Print Event on Sept. 19.

Artists gathered in the parking lot at Umpqua Valley Arts in Roseburg to transform large carved blocks into prints using a steamroller. UVA provided participating artists with materials and a small stipend, while visitors watched the printing process and took part in hands-on printmaking activities.

Van Norman developed his piece in collaboration with members of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. The print depicts the Umpqua River and incorporates an augmented-reality experience that can be accessed by scanning a QR code.

After opening the linked webpage and allowing it to use the device’s camera, viewers point their phone or tablet at the print. Interactive buttons then appear over different subjects within the artwork. Selecting a button plays an audio recording naming that subject in Takelma.

The recordings feature the voice of Elizabeth Bryant from the Takelma Language Program.

Van Norman said the collaboration began when he contacted Cow Creek Tribal Culture Program Manager Jennifer Bryant and explained what he hoped to create. He later met through Zoom with Bryant and Cassandra Nava to discuss the project.

“We talked about subject matter that would be relevant to the Tribe,” Van Norman said.

He reviewed the Tribe’s kindergarten through 12th-grade curriculum to select most of the subjects included in the print. He then submitted sketches, incorporated additional suggestions, and sent the final designs to the Tribe for review before beginning the carving process.

While Van Norman carved the large block, audio recordings were created for the augmented-reality portion of the project. He later used images from a steamroller printing event in Portland as the visual anchor for the interactive feature and sent demonstrations and videos to the Tribe for review.

“I think it’s important to keep this language alive in the world and make it available to all Tribal members in order to strengthen cultural identity,” Van Norman said.

Van Norman was also scheduled to lead a printmaking demonstration Monday with the Tribe’s after-school program.

“I hope to inspire them to make art that is meaningful to them,” he said.

Van Norman credited Umpqua Valley Arts with creating the opportunity for the work to take shape.

“This whole thing wouldn’t be possible without having been invited to Umpqua Valley Arts’ steamroller printmaking event,” Van Norman said.

He said the invitation inspired him to create a piece specifically connected to the Umpqua Valley.

During Saturday’s event, large linocut blocks were printed multiple times using the steamroller. One print from each block was retained for UVA’s private collection, while the remaining prints stayed with the artists for their portfolios.
