Low pressure will bring showers and thunderstorms today, with the greatest risk of lightning from the Cascades eastward. This could result in new fire starts, though wetting rain will mitigate this potential. Coastal areas should remain mostly dry. A warming and drying trend begins Friday and continues over the weekend into at least the middle of next week.

• Noon - 1200 block of North Old Town Road near Oakland. Smoke may be visible from I-5, Oakland, Sutherlin, Fair Oaks, Wilbur, Umpqua, Nonpareil and Roseburg.
• 1 p.m. - 8000 block of Tiller Trail Highway. Smoke may be visible from Tiller, Days Creek, Milo, Canyonville, Myrtle Creek, Riddle and Tri City. This burn was previously scheduled for Saturday but has been moved to Thursday.
• 2 p.m. - 1300 block of Fairway Drive in Myrtle Creek. Smoke may be visible from I-5, Myrtle Creek, Canyonville, Round Prairie, Tri City, Riddle and Days Creek. Smoke from this burn may remain visible for up to two days.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - After more than 100 deployments and dozens of captures and arrests, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office K9 Eros is retiring from law enforcement service.

Eros, an 8½-year-old German Shepherd trained in patrol apprehension, has served with the Sheriff’s Office since November 2021. The decision to retire him was made following advice from his veterinary care team.

The K9 was originally purchased by an anonymous community donor and gifted to the Sheriff’s Office. During his career, Eros was deployed more than 100 times in support of law enforcement operations.

His service included:

• 39 captures
• 11 felony arrests
• Nine misdemeanor arrests
• 21 felony case assists
• 19 misdemeanor case assists
• 22 community demonstrations

Eros worked with two handlers during his time with the agency: retired Deputy Oscar Rosas and his current handler, Deputy William Maynes.

“Eros has been the best partner. He has been my best friend and my backup. He’s loved his work and serving our great community,” Maynes said. “It has been my honor to have been his handler and now it’s my continued honor to give him a home as a normal dog enjoying his retirement.”

Rosas described Eros as a fearless and loyal companion.

“Eros was and still is the best companion a K9 handler can have,” Rosas said. “He has no fear and unconditional bravery in any situation. Thank you for your service, buddy.”

Eros will remain with Maynes and spend the rest of his life as the deputy’s family dog.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has operated an active K9 program since 2013. The agency credited community donors and organizations including Friends of Umpqua Valley Police K9 Programs and Bailey’s Veterinary Clinic for supporting the program. Bailey’s Veterinary Clinic provides medical care for the agency’s K9s at no cost.

Adapt Integrated Health Care is warning patients and community members about fraudulent emails that use the MyChart name and branding to request payment for medical products.

The emails reportedly tell recipients they can receive a medical kit after completing a survey or answering health-related questions. In some cases, recipients are then asked to pay a shipping fee or provide additional payment information.

Adapt said the messages are part of a broader phishing campaign and are not connected to a breach of its MyChart system or patient records. Receiving one of the emails does not mean a person’s MyChart account or medical information has been accessed.

In one reported case, a patient was asked to pay a shipping fee after answering several questions. After making the payment, the person was prompted to pay an additional $79. The patient reported the incident to Adapt and is working with their financial institution to address the fraudulent charge.

The emails may not be specifically targeting people known to use MyChart. More than 280 million patients in the United States have records in Epic, the electronic health record system that supports MyChart. Scammers may send the messages broadly, expecting that some recipients will recognize or use the service.

Fraudulent messages may include the MyChart logo or other familiar branding to appear legitimate. Adapt recommends that recipients:

• Do not provide payment information in response to an unexpected email offering a medical kit or other health-related product.
• Avoid clicking links or sharing personal or financial information when a message appears suspicious.
• Be cautious of unexpected offers, even when an email uses familiar logos or branding.
• Access MyChart through a trusted website or application to verify a message instead of using links in an unsolicited email.
• Contact their financial institution immediately if payment information may have been provided to a fraudulent source.
• Report suspected fraudulent communications to the organization being impersonated and their financial institution.

Adapt is encouraging anyone who receives a suspicious message appearing to come from MyChart to avoid responding or submitting payment information.

Several landowner-conducted prescribed burns are tentatively scheduled across Douglas County from Thursday through Saturday, according to the Douglas Forest Protective Association.

DFPA emphasized that the agency issued permits for the burns but will not conduct the operations. Each burn will take place on private property and remains dependent on weather and other conditions.

Saturday, Sept. 19

• 1 p.m. - 1000 block of Glenbrook Loop in Riddle. Smoke may be visible from I-5, Tri City, Myrtle Creek, Weaver, Riddle, Canyonville and Days Creek.

Prescribed burns are used to improve pastureland and wildlife habitat, control unwanted vegetation and reduce the amount of combustible material that can contribute to wildfires.

The schedule is tentative and could change if weather or burning conditions are not favorable. Residents and motorists may see smoke near the listed areas while burning operations are underway.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Drivers entering downtown Roseburg on SE Stephens Street should prepare for nighttime delays and detours beginning Sunday, Sept. 20.

A City of Roseburg contractor will pave SE Stephens Street from the southern city limits near the Parrott House to Brockway Avenue. Work is scheduled for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights, generally from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The project is expected to continue through Wednesday morning, Sept. 23.

Traffic entering downtown through the work area will be affected. Motorists should allow additional travel time and be prepared to follow posted detours and directions from traffic-control crews. Traffic leaving downtown is not expected to be affected.

Drivers are asked to slow down and use caution around workers and equipment.

The city thanked residents and motorists for their patience while the street improvements are completed.

Oregon’s unemployment rate remained largely unchanged in August as the state continued to experience modest job losses compared with a year ago.

The statewide unemployment rate was 5.1% in August, down slightly from 5.2% in July, according to the Oregon Employment Department. Oregon’s rate has remained between 5% and 5.3% for the past 18 months.

The national unemployment rate was 4.1% in both July and August.

Oregon’s seasonally adjusted nonfarm payroll employment declined by 800 jobs in August. That followed a revised loss of 1,800 jobs in July.

Professional and business services recorded the largest monthly decline, losing 1,100 jobs. Construction added 700 jobs, while retail trade gained 500.

Over the past 12 months, Oregon lost approximately 10,900 payroll jobs, a decline of 0.5%.

Health care and social assistance continued to lead employment growth, adding 10,200 jobs, or 3.2%, since August 2025. Private education added 800 jobs, and other services gained 1,300.

Manufacturing experienced the largest year-over-year decline, losing 6,800 jobs, or 3.8%. Most other major industries reported job losses of less than 2%.

Despite the year-over-year decline, the Employment Department said there have been signs of stabilization during the past five months. Oregon added a net 1,800 payroll jobs between March and August, representing growth of approximately 0.1%.

Industries recording the largest gains during that period included:

• Health care and social assistance, with 3,800 additional jobs
• Construction, with 2,200 additional jobs
• Other services, with 1,700 additional jobs
• Retail trade, with 1,400 additional jobs
• Private education, with 1,400 additional jobs

Those gains were partially offset by the loss of 3,100 manufacturing jobs, 2,600 leisure and hospitality jobs, and 2,000 government jobs.

The Oregon Employment Department plans to release August unemployment and employment figures for counties and metropolitan areas on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Statewide employment data for September is scheduled to be released Wednesday, Oct. 14.

The Winston-Dillard Melon Festival opens Friday at Riverbend Park, beginning a three-day weekend of live entertainment, family activities, competitions, vendors, and community traditions.

This year’s “Watermelon Wonderland” celebration will run from noon to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

Festival activities include children’s games, senior bingo, live music, food and craft vendors, melon eating, mud volleyball, a scavenger hunt, a talent show, and car shows for adults and children. The Winston-Dillard Area Festival Association will also serve barbecue beef Saturday and barbecue chicken Sunday.

One of this year’s new attractions is the Shaky Grounds Cafe Escape Room. The mobile escape room will offer free, five-minute games Friday and Sunday, combining puzzles with emergency preparedness lessons.

Saturday’s events will include the Winston-Dillard Melon Festival Parade, beginning at 11 a.m. Participants can register starting at 10 a.m. at the Abby’s Legendary Pizza parking lot.

The Melon Festival Car Show will also take place Saturday at Riverbend Park. Registration will be open from 10 a.m. to noon for vehicles of all years, makes, and models. Awards will be presented at 2:30 p.m.

Children ages 3 through 14 can enter the festival’s first Kids Car Show with decorated Power Wheels, pedal cars, bicycles, tricycles, and other kid-sized rides. Registration will be open from 10 a.m. to noon, with trophies presented at 2 p.m.

Winston’s Got Talent begins at 3:30 p.m. Saturday on the Riverbend Park stage. Performers can register at the festival information booth Friday or before noon Saturday.

The Roseburg Receiver and The Roseburg Plug will have booths at the festival throughout all three days. Community members are invited to stop by, meet the teams, and learn more about their local news, public safety, and community information services.
