Gusty winds and dry daytime humidities expected east of the Cascades today and again on Friday.
Temperatures trend less warm today as as a shortwave trough moves by to the north. Gusty winds and low humidities east of the Cascades will result in elevated fire weather concerns this afternoon. Some cumulus buildups are expected today, mainly over eastern Siskiyou, Modoc and southern Lake counties. Breezy conditions continue into Friday. Saturday, low pressure will bring cooler temperatures and showers as well as low chances for thunderstorms from the Cascades west. Gusty winds are expected east of the Cascades but humidities will trend higher. Dry weather is expected Sunday.

The National Interagency Fire Center lowered the National Preparedness Level to 3 on Wednesday as improving weather and greater resource availability eased pressure on the country’s wildland firefighting system.

The change took effect at 7:30 a.m. MDT on Sept. 9.

Officials attributed the decrease to continued improvement in fire weather conditions across several geographic areas, increased availability of nationally shared firefighting resources and light ordering through the National Interagency Coordination Center.

National Preparedness Levels range from 1 to 5 and reflect wildfire activity, resource availability and the demand for crews, aircraft and equipment across the country. A decrease to Level 3 indicates that resources remain committed to incidents, but national demand has eased from the higher preparedness level.

Wildfire activity is continuing despite the improvement. NIFC reported 61 new fires nationwide Tuesday, including four new large fires. About 14,405 firefighters and support personnel were assigned to 59 large fires across the country Wednesday.

Oregon had nine large fires listed by NIFC, covering approximately 1.2 million acres. Firefighters were working on incidents in eight geographic areas nationwide.

So far in 2026, 53,802 wildfires have burned more than 8.4 million acres across the United States. During the same period in 2025, 48,327 fires had burned approximately 4.3 million acres.

The decrease in the national preparedness level does not automatically change local fire danger levels or public use restrictions. Those decisions continue to be made by the agencies responsible for individual forests and fire protection districts.

Several permitted prescribed pasture burns are tentatively scheduled near Roseburg this week, and residents may see smoke from Interstate 5 and communities across the surrounding area.

The first burn is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, in the 2800 block of Melqua Road. Smoke may remain visible until approximately 7 p.m. from Roseburg, Melrose and Interstate 5. (Watch Duty Link)

Three additional burns are planned for Thursday, Sept. 10:

Smoke from Thursday’s burns may be highly visible from Roseburg, Interstate 5, Highway 138, Diamond Lake Boulevard and North Bank Road. Smoke from the Tyee Road burn may also be seen from Umpqua, Melrose and Hubbard Creek.

Prescribed pasture burning is used to improve grazing land, enhance wildlife habitat, control weeds and brush, and reduce vegetation that could fuel a wildfire. Douglas County landowners have historically conducted about 10,000 acres of prescribed burning annually to maintain pastureland and healthy landscapes.

Fire officials say prescribed burning can also help slow wildfires by reducing accumulated grasses, brush and other combustible vegetation.

Before a burn begins, fire trails must be established and adequate personnel and suppression equipment must be available. Burns are conducted only when weather and atmospheric conditions are favorable. Officials also consider where smoke is expected to travel in an effort to reduce impacts on populated areas.

All scheduled times are tentative and may change if weather or burn conditions are not suitable.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - The Douglas Forest Protective Association will begin issuing permits for prescribed pasture burns when weather and fire conditions allow.

Prescribed burning is commonly used by landowners to improve pastures, control weeds and brush, enhance wildlife habitat and reduce vegetation that could fuel a wildfire.

According to DFPA, firefighters have seen wildfires slow or become easier to suppress when they reach open grass fields and hillsides where prescribed burning has been conducted periodically.

Officials said the window for completing a successful pasture burn is often short and dependent on the weather. Grass and other vegetation must be dry enough to burn effectively, but conditions must also allow the fire to remain under control. Once new green growth begins, the burns can become less effective.

Before receiving a permit, landowners must establish fire trails around the planned burn area and have enough people available to conduct the burn, patrol the property and complete mop-up work.

They must also demonstrate that adequate fire suppression equipment and personnel will be on site. DFPA may issue a permit after the fire trails have been inspected and approved and weather conditions are considered suitable.

Smoke conditions will also be evaluated. Burns will only be approved when weather and fire conditions are favorable for keeping smoke away from homes and populated areas.

DFPA emphasized that these permits apply specifically to prescribed pasture burns. The association is not currently issuing permits for backyard debris burning, which remains restricted.

People gathering firewood for personal use on the Umpqua National Forest can now obtain their permits online without visiting a Forest Service office.

The forest’s new E-Permit system allows woodcutters to apply for a permit, download it and print it from home. Personal-use firewood permits are free and allow each permit holder to gather up to 10 cords of firewood per year for household use.

Permits are available through the Umpqua National Forest E-Permit webpage.

Woodcutters should review the permit requirements and follow all conditions, collection-area restrictions and other instructions provided with the permit.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Sunrise Enterprises will celebrate the opening of its new facility on Mulholland Drive with a community event on Friday, Sept. 18.

The grand opening will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1931 NW Mulholland Drive in Roseburg. The public is invited to tour the facility, meet Sunrise participants and staff, and learn more about the nonprofit’s services in Douglas County.

The celebration will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, refreshments, activities and opportunities to connect with Sunrise staff, participants and community partners.

Sunrise Enterprises provides employment and community-based services for people with disabilities. The new facility gives the organization additional room to expand its Day Support Activities and other services designed to help participants develop skills, build relationships, pursue personal goals and become more involved in the community.

“This is so much more than the opening of a new location,” Executive Director Jane Maritz said. “It is about creating more opportunities for people to work, grow, connect and belong.”

Maritz said the larger space will allow Sunrise to serve more people in an environment where participants can continue building skills, pursuing their goals and taking an active role in the community.

Employment Director Savannah Jones said the Mulholland location was created as a place where job seekers can explore new possibilities, businesses can connect with prospective employees and Day Support Activities participants can take part in meaningful experiences.

“We hope our community will join us at our open house to see this space for themselves, learn more about the incredible services Sunrise provides throughout Douglas County, and meet some of the amazing people receiving services,” Jones said.

Sunrise officials said the need for inclusive, community-based services continues to grow. The new location will provide another gathering place for learning, social connection, personal growth and greater independence.

The organization’s administrative offices will remain at 423 NE Winchester Street in Roseburg.

CANYONVILLE, Ore. - Drivers traveling on Interstate 5 south of Canyonville should prepare for weekday delays beginning Monday, Sept. 14, as crews remove several dozen fire-damaged trees near the highway.

The work is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday through the end of September, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation. Most delays are expected to last less than 20 minutes.

Rolling slowdowns will be used in both directions. Southbound traffic will be affected between mileposts 103 and 95, from Tri City to Canyon Creek. Northbound slowdowns will occur between mileposts 87 and 95, from Azalea to Canyon Creek.

During each slowdown, pilot cars will reduce traffic to a slow but steady pace, giving crews enough time to safely cut down trees without requiring extended highway closures. Emergency vehicles will be allowed through as needed.

Flaggers will also briefly stop traffic at the following southbound on-ramps:

• Exit 103 at Tri City
• Exit 102 at Gazley Road
• Exit 101 at Riddle Road
• Exit 99 at North Canyonville
• Exit 98 at Canyonville
• Exit 95 at Canyon Creek

The northbound on-ramp at Exit 88 in Azalea will also be affected.

The trees were damaged during the Milepost 97 Complex Fire in 2019. Many are now dead or dying and could fall into the interstate’s travel lanes.

Message boards will be placed ahead of the work zone in both directions. Drivers are asked to watch for traffic controls, workers, construction vehicles and debris on the roadway.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Umpqua National Forest officials are lowering the forest’s fire danger level and lifting public use restrictions following recent rainfall.

Effective at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, the fire danger level will decrease from High to Moderate. Stage 2 Public Use Restrictions will also be lifted, leaving no public use restrictions in place across the forest.

Officials said the rainfall improved moisture conditions throughout Umpqua National Forest.

With the restrictions lifted, campfires will once again be allowed in wilderness areas and at dispersed campsites. Personal chainsaw use will also be permitted at any time, subject to applicable regulations.

Although conditions have improved, visitors are reminded that wildfires can still start and spread under moderate fire danger conditions. Anyone using a campfire should make sure it is completely extinguished before leaving the site.

Forest officials recommend drowning the fire with water, stirring the ashes and checking the area with the back of a hand. The remains should feel cold to the touch before the campsite is left unattended.
