Missing Roseburg Man Found on Hillside After Search Team Discovers His Bag

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A bag found on a neighboring property helped searchers locate a missing 73-year-old Roseburg man Friday evening, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
A sheriff’s office drone operator spotted the man on a hillside shortly after Search and Rescue volunteers discovered the bag. Ground crews reached him and helped him to safety.
Deputies began investigating around 2:10 p.m. October 9 after responding to a home in the 2800 block of SE Booth Avenue. The man’s wife reported that she had last seen her husband Wednesday evening, October 7. She told deputies he has dementia and limited mobility.
An initial search of the property did not turn up the man. Concerned about his health and ability to get around, deputies called in Douglas County Search and Rescue volunteers. A Douglas Alerts notification also went out to residents within a mile of the home, sharing his description and notifying neighbors of the search.
At about 6:02 p.m., a ground search team found a packed bag on a neighboring property. After the man’s wife confirmed it belonged to him, searchers passed the location to the drone operator, who concentrated on the surrounding terrain.
Eight minutes later, at about 6:10 p.m., the operator located the man.
Deputies determined he had fallen down a steep, dry, grassy slope with an estimated incline of 35 to 45 degrees. The sheriff’s office said he had spent a night outdoors before being found.
Ambulance personnel evaluated him at the scene, but he declined further medical assistance. He was then escorted home and reunited with his wife and daughter.
The sheriff’s office thanked Search and Rescue volunteers, emergency medical personnel, and others who assisted in finding him.
Roseburg’s Third Thursday Event to Feature Paper Cranes for Kuki City

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A paper crane project connecting Roseburg with its sister city in Japan will be the focus of this month’s Third Thursday gathering at Umpqua Valley Arts.
Thrive Umpqua and Umpqua Valley Arts Association will host the free event Thursday, October 15, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 1624 W. Harvard Ave. The gathering is open to all ages, and no art experience is needed.
The evening begins with a half-hour social time featuring light snacks and beverages. At 5 p.m., participants will hear from the Roseburg Sister Cities program about the partnership between Roseburg and Kuki City, Japan.
After the presentation, community member Jackie will guide participants through making paper cranes for a community project that will be sent to Kuki City. Organizers will provide all supplies.
Participants may also bring an art project of their own to work on during the gathering.
Third Thursday is a monthly program held on the third Thursday of each month throughout 2026, offering time for art activities and community connection.
Those planning to attend can preregister at bit.ly/3rdthursday2026. Questions can be directed to connect@thriveumpqua.com.
Fir Grove’s Future Expected to Draw Comments at Roseburg School Board Meeting

Families and community members will have an opportunity Wednesday evening to address the Roseburg School Board about a recommendation to close Fir Grove Elementary after the current school year.
The board meets Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. in Fir Grove’s gymnasium/cafeteria. District Communications Coordinator Chelsea Duncan said staff expect to extend the public comment period to give people additional time to share their views about the school.
No action on Fir Grove’s future is listed on Wednesday’s agenda, according to Duncan.
Superintendent Jared Cordon proposed the closure two weeks ago as the district considers consolidating its facilities in response to declining enrollment. Fir Grove has served students for 66 years.
The school was already scheduled to host this meeting before Cordon made his recommendation.
Alongside public comments, the evening will feature recognition of Fir Grove employees Lisa Jarrett, the school’s office manager, and Amy Larman, a kindergarten teacher. Both will receive Crystal Apple Awards as part of the board’s student and staff recognition.
Principal Katrina Hanson will provide a school report, and student leaders from Roseburg High School will update the board. Other business includes district reports and consideration of a resolution recognizing American Education Week in November.
Saving Grace to Waive Pet Adoption Fees October 16-17
ROSEBURG, Ore. - Saving Grace Humane Society will waive adoption fees for dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens October 16–17 during its final adoption event of the ASPCA’s three-month Rescue Effect campaign.
The event will take place at the organization’s Roseburg shelter. Approved adopters will have fees waived that normally range from $25 to $225, depending on the animal.
Friday’s adoption hours are noon to 6:30 p.m. From 11:45 a.m. to 3 p.m., 104.5 SAM-FM and Dreams and Vibes Co. will also be on-site with music, dirty sodas, and rolled ice cream. Visitors are welcome to attend even if they are not planning to adopt.
Melissa Owens, Saving Grace’s development director, said support from the ASPCA allows the shelter to reduce the upfront cost of adoption through the fee-waived events. She encouraged people considering a pet to visit and meet the available animals.
The October event is Saving Grace’s third and final fee-waived adoption event tied to this year’s Rescue Effect campaign, which began in August. The national effort promotes adoption and fostering and provides funding to participating animal shelters and rescue organizations.
According to the release, the ASPCA is providing $2 million in grants nationwide this year to help cover adoption fees and support shelter operations.
Saving Grace said adoptions help make room for additional animals needing shelter and care. Fostering provides another way for residents to help by temporarily caring for animals outside the shelter.
The nonprofit serves Douglas County through animal sheltering, protection, and community services, including care for animals awaiting adoption or reunification with their families.
Information about available animals and adoption procedures is available at savinggracehumanesociety.org.
Grocery Outlet Plans Sutherlin Store, Seeks Independent Operator

SUTHERLIN, Ore. - A Grocery Outlet store is in development for Sutherlin, with the project listed on a construction company’s website and recruitment underway for an independent operator.
Dickerhoof Construction identifies the Sutherlin Grocery Outlet among its current projects. A separate project page includes links to civil and building shell plans labeled Sept. 2, 2026, along with additional construction documents.
The Roseburg Receiver has reached out to Dickerhoof Construction for additional details about the Sutherlin project and is awaiting a response.
Grocery Outlet has also posted an Independent Operator/Store Manager opportunity for Sutherlin. The listing describes responsibilities that include overseeing daily operations, selecting merchandise, managing finances, and recruiting and training employees.
The company operates primarily through independent business owners who run individual stores under a license from Grocery Outlet. Operators hire their own employees and have discretion over much of their store’s product selection, allowing them to tailor inventory to the community.
Grocery Outlet sells discounted groceries, including produce, fresh meat, refrigerated and frozen foods, and everyday staples. Its merchandise combines regularly stocked products with a changing selection acquired through opportunistic purchasing.
The new store would add another grocery shopping option in Sutherlin, where Shop Smart operates at 811 E. Central Ave.
An opening date, store hours, and a local operator’s name were not identified in the project and recruitment materials reviewed.
