One Life Lost in Sunday Morning House Fire in Yoncalla

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

A Sunday morning house fire in Yoncalla left one person dead and displaced residents who received assistance from the American Red Cross and Adapt Integrated Health Care.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze at a residence in the 100 block of Birch Street. Authorities have not released the deceased person’s name, and no other injuries were reported.

North Douglas County Fire and EMS Chief Brian Burke said crews arrived shortly after 10 a.m. to find extensive fire throughout the home. Firefighters worked from outside the structure using defensive operations.

Damage was estimated at $118,500. The fire did not damage neighboring properties, according to Burke.

During the response, Zac Botner of Tal Botner Excavation brought equipment to help remove debris. Burke credited that work with allowing firefighters to reach areas where fire remained and shortening the time needed to extinguish it. The agency thanked Botner for his work and equipment support at the scene.

Oakland, Sutherlin, and Fair Oaks fire departments assisted North Douglas County Fire and EMS, along with Umpqua Valley Ambulance and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Douglas Electric Cooperative personnel also responded to address electrical hazards.

UMAC Brings ‘The Cabinet of Curiosities & Oddities’ to Douglas County Fairgrounds October 23-24

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A mysterious collection of sirens, porcelain dolls, and unusual creatures will take the stage when Umpqua Movement Arts Collaboration presents “The Cabinet of Curiosities & Oddities” on Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24, at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall.

The production combines dance, aerial performances, and theatrical storytelling in a dark, Victorian-inspired setting. It will be the local nonprofit’s first stage production at the fairgrounds.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with performances beginning at 7 p.m. both evenings. Tickets are $22 in advance through umacroseburg.com or $27 at the door.

All ages are welcome, although organizers advise parental discretion because of mature themes. A no-host full bar and food from Huele A Tacos Food Truck will be available.

A Collection Brought to Life

More than 30 dancers, aerialists, and other performance artists will appear in the show, which features over a dozen acts connected by a central character known as “the Collector.”

The Collector will guide audiences through a collection of sirens, porcelain dolls, mysterious creatures, and other curiosities, with each act showcasing different forms of movement arts. Organizers describe the production as an immersive story designed to transport audiences into an enchanting, otherworldly setting.

The show marks Lindsey Rivenes’ debut production as UMAC’s creative director.

“I am very grateful for the chance to work with this amazing group of creative individuals. I am truly dedicated to transporting this audience to an otherworldly setting filled with dangerous temptations,” Rivenes said.
“Our UMAC community has dedicated themselves again to bring an unforgettable show to life.”

Costumes Encouraged Both Nights

Audience members are invited to become part of the evening’s atmosphere by wearing Victorian, gothic, steampunk, macabre, or other unusual attire.

An audience costume contest will take place during intermission each night, with prizes for standout costumes.

“Whether you come as an elegant oddity, mysterious creature, or something entirely your own, we want to see what belongs inside the Cabinet,” the organization says on its website. “Prizes await our most captivating curiosities-so dress strange, dress spectacular, and give the Collector something worth noticing.”

Months of Preparation

UMAC is home to The Diva Dancers, a group of Douglas County community members who have been preparing for the production since early summer. The performances will bring together local participants and special guests.

The Diva Dancers have been organized since 2020, offering adults opportunities to participate in weekly classes and seasonal performances regardless of dance experience, age, or gender.

Previous productions have taken place at Backside Brewing Company, the Roseburg Elks Lodge, and Umpqua Community College’s Whipple Fine Arts Centerstage. This fall’s move to the fairgrounds gives the group a new venue for its latest theatrical production.

About UMAC

Umpqua Movement Arts Collaboration formally incorporated in summer 2023 as a nonprofit organization supporting movement arts and community connection.

Its charitable mission is “to cultivate an appreciation for wellness, creativity and diversity within the community.” The organization pursues that mission through dance, holistic fitness, and theatrical performance, bringing people together through movement, art, and connection.

Tickets and additional information about “The Cabinet of Curiosities & Oddities” are available at www.umacroseburg.com. Questions may be directed to UMAC board member Thomas McGregor at thomasm@umacroseburg.com.

Tillamook Air Museum to Reopen October 29 Following $1 Hangar Sale

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

TILLAMOOK, Ore. - The Tillamook Air Museum will reopen Thursday, Oct. 29, welcoming visitors back to historic Hangar B after a storm forced the museum to close for roughly 10 months.

Doors will open at 10 a.m., and the museum will remain open until 7 p.m. that day to celebrate its return.

The reopening follows the sale of historic Hangar B to Vintage Aviation Museum, a Utah-based nonprofit, for $1. Under the agreement approved by the Port of Tillamook Bay commissioners in August, the nonprofit agreed to preserve the World War II-era building and keep it as the home of the Tillamook Air Museum.

According to the museum’s reopening announcement, both Hangar B and the museum are now under the nonprofit’s ownership. The museum will continue operating under the Tillamook Air Museum name, with roof repairs and long-term preservation among the priorities for its new owner.

Since the December 2025 storm, work has focused on preparing the building for visitors and returning aircraft, exhibits, and collections to the museum. Officials said their first priority has been restoring the experience visitors knew before the closure.

“After ten long months, we are thrilled to announce that the Tillamook Air Museum will reopen to the public on Thursday, October 29!” the museum said.

Work on the storm-damaged roof is continuing. Museum officials said they are working through the details needed to patch the damaged section while developing plans for Hangar B’s long-term care.

The reopening marks a milestone in that effort, but officials said more work remains. Future plans include improving exhibits, adding displays, and expanding what visitors can see inside the historic building.

Vintage Aviation Museum previously announced plans to relocate most of its aircraft collection to Tillamook. Its broader vision includes using the hangar for aircraft displays, aviation exhibits, preservation, education, and visitor experiences.

Museum officials also thanked volunteers and supporters who helped during the closure, saying their time and encouragement were essential to reaching the reopening date.

Visitors will be able to return to Hangar B beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 29 as the museum resumes public access under its new ownership.

Public Forum in Roseburg to Examine Retail Drugs and Health Risks

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A free public forum at the Roseburg Public Library on Thursday, Oct. 15, will examine products sold in stores and online that may pose health risks despite being available for purchase.

The League of Women Voters of Umpqua Valley will host the event, sponsored by the Douglas Public Health Network, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the library’s Deer Creek Room.

Kim Gandy, overdose prevention coordinator for the Douglas Public Health Network, will discuss what organizers describe as “retail drugs” and efforts to educate residents about unregulated products.

“Just because it’s legal, does NOT mean it’s safe to consume,” Gandy said in the announcement.

Organizers use the term retail drugs to describe products available at convenience stores, smoke and vape shops, supplement stores, and online. Some are marketed as natural or wellness products but can have powerful effects on the brain and body, according to the release.

Examples listed in the announcement include kratom, 7-OH, tianeptine, phenibut, nitrous oxide, and certain over-the-counter medications when misused.

The presentation will address concerns about addiction, dependence, and withdrawal, along with differences in product regulation and oversight. According to organizers, some products may lack the testing and quality controls required for approved medications, allowing their strength and ingredients to vary.

The forum is open to the public, and admission is free.

The League of Women Voters of Umpqua Valley is a nonpartisan organization that promotes civic participation and public policy education. More information about the organization is available at lwvuv.org.
