Roseburg Mayor Proclaims May 1 As Thrive Umpqua Day

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Roseburg Mayor Larry Rich has proclaimed May 1, 2026, as Thrive Umpqua Day, recognizing ongoing community efforts to improve health, well-being, and connection across the Umpqua Valley.

The proclamation, dated April 27, marks the fifth consecutive year the city has recognized Thrive Umpqua Day. The day highlights the impact of small, everyday choices that can support a healthier community, including walking, biking, eating well, connecting with neighbors, supporting local businesses, and thanking people who serve the community.

According to the proclamation, Thrive Umpqua has grown over the past nine years to include 16,058 citizens2,810 volunteers, and 135 organizations engaged in the community’s well-being initiative.

Thrive Umpqua continues work that began through the Blue Zones Project, which launched locally in 2017 as a community collaboration focused on improving health outcomes through proven, evidence-based practices inspired by some of the world’s longest-living cultures.

The proclamation states that Thrive Umpqua interventions have helped reduce health risks and produced measurable medical and productivity savings. Roseburg and the surrounding area received national recognition as a Certified Blue Zones Community in 2021.

Rich’s proclamation also recognized the role of local leaders, volunteers, and residents who have supported policies and programs aimed at improving quality of life.

“This achievement required extraordinary effort across our community,” the proclamation states.

Thrive Umpqua Day is intended as an opportunity to honor collaboration, celebrate progress, and reaffirm a shared commitment to building a healthier and more connected community.

Community members are encouraged to mark the day by taking simple actions such as going for a 10-minute walk, checking in on a neighbor, choosing a plant-forward meal, taking time to unwind, supporting a local business, or thanking teachers, healthcare workers, volunteers, neighbors, and others who help strengthen the community.

Thrive Umpqua organizers said every action counts and encouraged residents to share their Thrive Umpqua Day moments online.

Ballots Arriving Soon For May 19 Election In Douglas County

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Ballots for the May 19 election will begin arriving soon in mailboxes across Douglas County, according to the Douglas County Clerk’s Office.

County Clerk Daniel Loomis said ballots must be cast no later than 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Voters may return their ballots by mail through the U.S. Postal Service or use any official ballot drop site in Oregon. The Clerk’s Office recommends mailing ballots at least one week before Election Day to help ensure they arrive on time.

Voters who mail their ballot close to Election Day are encouraged to ask the post office to apply a hand-cancellation stamp, also known as a postmark, to the return envelope.

Official ballot drop sites will remain available through 8 p.m. on Election Day. The Clerk’s Office also noted a new location for the Umpqua Community College ballot drop site, which is now near the UCC library.

The Clerk’s Office offered several reminders for voters ahead of the election:

  • All registered voters will receive a ballot based on their residence address and political party affiliation as of the April 28 registration deadline.
  • Voter registration must be current in order to receive an official ballot.
  • Registered Oregon voters who need to update registration information, other than party affiliation, have until 8 p.m. May 19 to do so.
  • Some recent registration changes may result in a second ballot being issued. That ballot will include a blue slip of paper and is the correct ballot to cast.
  • Voters who have not received a ballot by Friday, May 8, should contact or visit the Douglas County Clerk’s Office.
  • Voters should review and complete both sides of the ballot before returning it.
  • Ballot return envelopes must be signed where the voter’s printed name and address appear.
  • Voters should sign the envelope in the same manner as their current voter registration card. The Clerk’s Office said voters may use the signature on their Oregon driver license or ID as a reference.

For more information about the May 19 election, voters can contact the Douglas County Elections Division at 541-440-4252 or email elections@douglascountyor.gov.

The Douglas County Clerk’s Office is located at 1036 SE Douglas Ave., Room CH 124, Roseburg.

According to NOAA Online Weather Data, Sunday’s high was well above normal for this time of year. The average temperature for the day came in at 68 degrees, which was 11.2 degrees above the normal daily average.
