WARMER THAN NORMAL WEATHER EXPECTED FOR FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY

Article by KQEN News Radio

Wamer than normal weather is expected in the Umpqua Valley Friday through Sunday.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that sunshine is expected with afternoon high temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. The normal high temperature for this part of March is 60 degrees. Clouds with a chance of rain are forecast starting late Sunday. Some precipitation is expected for much of next week.

Thursday’s high temperature was 61 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport.

SHADE STRUCTURE INSTALLED AT ROSEBURG SKATE PARK

Article by KQEN News Radio

Roseburg Skate Park is offering new amenities, thanks to a community grant-funded project completed this week.

A City of Roseburg release said the free skate park now has a 20-foot by 24-foot pavilion, plus a drinking foundation with a water bottle filling station and dog bowl. Picnic tables will be installed soon. Orange plastic construction fencing was removed after an inspection Thursday afternoon. Roseburg Public Works Department purchased the timber and metal shade structure from Romtec in Glide. Romtec provided materials, installation and subcontractors, who installed the structure in three days.

The project was financed with a $95,000 Community Health Improvement Plan Grant Thrive Umpqua won from Umpqua Health Alliance on behalf of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.

The park is open to kids, youth and adults riding skateboards, skates, non-motorized scooters and BMX bikes.

The new pavilion was built on a concrete pad that had held a structure torn down 10 years ago. Metal pavilion posts were anchor-bolted into new concrete footings this week. The drinking fountain’s water line was connected last week.

Paranormal Action Sports owner Cody Scott said he’s looking forward to escaping summer’s heat at the new shelter. Scott recalled how some who used the skate park had trashed the last shade structure by adding graffiti, putting holes in the wood and even tearing out a picnic bench to use as a skate park obstacle. Scott said he’s educating locals about the new community asset and encouraging people to protect the entire park and its features. He wants graffiti artists or taggers to stop spray-painting anything in the park – and especially the concrete riding surface, because the paint makes concrete very slick to ride on.

WORK CONTINUES ON OREGON 42 LOOKINGGLASS CREEK TO INTERSTATE FIVE PROJECT

Article by KQEN News Radio

Work continues on the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Oregon 42 Lookingglass Creek to Interstate Five project.

Dan Latham of ODOT said the project extends for 4.5 miles. Latham said last year, the contractor paved a little more than one mile of Oregon 42 between Carnes Road and the South Umpqua River Bridges. This was necessary in order to install the new traffic signal at Rolling Hills Road and place safety features in this area. Other work that has been completed includes placing ADA curb ramps at 14 intersections, building two right-turn lanes and adding a variety of safety measures.

Latham said for the next two weeks, nighttime road construction is planned in Winston for the section of Oregon 42 that extends from Lookinglass Creek through the Cheetah intersection to Lookingglass Road. Drivers should watch for intermittent lane closures through this area from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a m. each Sunday night through Friday morning. Latham said flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. Watch for construction signs and construction vehicles. During these two weeks, contractors will work on utility adjustments and pavement repairs.
