MORNING NEWS
Fresh headlines, updates, and community info to start the day.
New Daily Bus Route Will Connect Roseburg To Eugene, Medford Starting In April

A new intercity bus route is set to give Roseburg-area travelers another option for getting up and down the Interstate 5 corridor.
Pacific Crest Bus Lines says it plans to launch daily service in April between Eugene and Medford, with buses running seven days a week. For Roseburg, the new route will create a direct connection to destinations in both the southern Willamette Valley and Southern Oregon.
Along with Roseburg, scheduled stops will include Eugene, Cottage Grove, Sutherlin, Seven Feathers Casino Resort, Grants Pass and Medford.
The added service is expected to benefit a wide range of riders, including commuters, people visiting family, and travelers looking for an alternative to driving.
Reservations for the route are expected to open soon, according to the company.
Pacific Crest Bus Lines, based in Central Oregon, operates fixed-route and charter services across Oregon and Washington. The company also serves as a contractor for the Oregon Department of Transportation’s POINT intercity bus system, which connects rural communities with larger transportation hubs across the state.
Company information says Pacific Crest’s broader network links more than 20 cities and includes existing service to places such as Bend, Coos Bay and Portland. In addition to daily route service, the company also provides private charter transportation along with government and military transport.
Officials say the new Eugene-to-Medford route is designed to improve regional mobility in an area where long-distance public transportation options can be limited, while also offering a dependable and comfortable way to travel through Southern Oregon.

Thrive Umpqua Invites Community To Celebrate National Walking Day At Ford’s Pond

Thrive Umpqua is inviting community members to join in a National Walking Day celebration on Wednesday, April 1, at Ford’s Pond in Sutherlin.
The walk will begin at 9:00 a.m. and is being held in partnership with the UCVEG Wednesday Walkers. Organizers said the route is about 2 miles and is suitable for all ability levels, offering a welcoming way for people to get outside, stay active and connect with others.
Participants will also be entered into a raffle for a $25 Big 5 Sporting Goods gift card, and light snacks will be available while supplies last.
Thrive Umpqua said the event is open to everyone and encourages community members to bring a friend, wear comfortable shoes and come ready for a refreshing morning walk around the pond. The event will be held rain or shine.
Ford’s Pond has become a popular outdoor destination in Sutherlin, and the event gives local residents a chance to celebrate National Walking Day in a scenic setting while promoting healthy activity and community connection.
Road To Umpqua Hot Springs Reopens; Visitors Reminded Of Day-Use Rules, Cashless Fees Starting April 1

The road to Umpqua Hot Springs has reopened, restoring vehicle access to National Forest System Road 3401 after a winter closure that had been in place since early January, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The closure was originally put in place to prevent vehicles from getting stuck in snow and ice near the popular recreation area.
With easier access returning, forest officials are reminding visitors that the Umpqua Hot Springs area is strictly day-use only. Prohibited activities in and around the site include being there after sundown or before sunrise, camping, and parking or leaving a vehicle in violation of posted instructions. The day-use rules remain in effect through at least April 18, 2026, unless rescinded sooner.
The trailhead also remains a fee site. Forest Service information lists the day-use fee at $5 per vehicle, while the fee is waived for visitors displaying a valid Northwest Forest Pass or Interagency America the Beautiful pass on their vehicle dashboard. The hot springs trail itself is about 0.3 miles and the site is open from sunrise to sunset.
Beginning April 1, the Umpqua Hot Springs Trailhead will transition to cashless fee collection. Visitors planning a trip are being encouraged to either display an America the Beautiful pass or use the Recreation.gov app, create an account, and enter payment information before heading out. The Umpqua National Forest has also posted a broader alert noting that forest-operated developed recreation sites are going cashless starting April 1.
Umpqua Hot Springs, located off Highway 138 east of Roseburg near Toketee, is one of the most visited recreation destinations in the Umpqua National Forest. Forest officials are encouraging visitors to review site rules before visiting and to help protect the area by following posted regulations and Leave No Trace principles.

COLD FRONT WITH LIGHT RAIN COMING, FOLLOWED BY HIGH PRESSURE

A cold front is coming to the Umpqua Valley on Tuesday bringing light rain before warmer weather returns later in the week.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that precipitation amounts Tuesday into Wednesday will be minimal. A ridge of high pressure is expected to move in on Thursday. It should strengthen Friday through Sunday with temperatures of around 70 degrees in the forecast.
For Monday, partly sunny conditions and highs in the mid-60s are expected.
The high temperature at the Roseburg Regional Airport on Sunday was 60 degrees. Saturday the mercury reached 63 degrees with a trace of precipitation recorded.
COUNCIL TO CONSIDER RESOLUTION FOR APPLICATION OF PARKS GRANT

The Roseburg City Council will consider adopting a resolution authorizing and supporting the application for an Oregon Parks and Recreation Department Local Grant for field improvements at Fir Grove Park, as part of its meeting Monday night.
In 2020, the Umpqua United Soccer Club presented a proposal to the council requesting permission to make major improvements to the soccer fields at Fir Grove. The plan included removing a section of the grass fields and replacing it with two artificial turf fields, lighting and seating. The council approved the request by UUSC on the condition that all funding is secured prior to the beginning of the project.
In August of 2025, the council authorized staff to begin seeking funding opportunities for the improvements at Fir Grove. In February of this year, the council authorized the city manager to execute a grant agreement with the Umpqua Health Alliance accepting just over $666,000 for the project.
The Local Government Grant Program opened its yearly grant cycle on March 2nd. The grant submission requires a resolution from the council authorizing the application of the grant. Grant applications are due no later than June 5th. If authorized, staff will be requesting $1 million for the project.
Other items are on the agenda. The council will meet at 7:00 p.m. in the council chambers on Southeast Douglas Avenue. The meeting can be viewed on the city’s Facebook page or seen later at: https://roseburgor.gov/
BURGER READING PROGRAM BACK FOR THIRD YEAR AT ROSEBURG LIBRARY

Roseburg Public Library’s In-N-Out Burger reading program is back for a third year.
A city release said local youth ages 4 through 12 are invited to read books for burgers through April 18th.
The reading log is available to download on the library’s website at: www.roseburgpubliclibrary.org. Logs are also available at the library’s front desk. School groups can email at: library@roseburgor.gov and library staff will work through the details with a designated adult.
Logs allow youth to track their reading in one of two ways – by the number of books or minutes they read, or that their parents or caregivers read to them. When youngsters read for five hours – 300 minutes – they are eligible for a gift card for a free hamburger or cheeseburger at In-N-Out.
Kids can read and earn up to three burgers for their efforts. A Roseburg Public Library card is not required.
Each time a milestone is reached, stop by the library’s front desk. Library staff or volunteers distribute gift cards, track the number of children participating and log the number of books or minutes read.

Event highlights include a reentry simulation experience, a panel discussion with community voices, information tables by local programs, networking opportunities and more.
