ROSEBURG TIES RECORD HIGH FOR THE DATE ON THURSDAY

Article by KQEN News Radio

Roseburg tied the record high temperature for the date on Thursday, but the streak of warm weather around twenty degrees above seasonal norms, appears to have ended.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the mercury reached 81 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport. That tied the record for March 19th set back in 1960.

Forecasters said high pressure that has been dominating the region will be pushing out by Saturday. Friday should see highs in the low to mid 70s, but the weekend will return to normal seasonal temperatures of near 60 degrees. There is the chance for some light rain on Friday night and into Saturday. A new weather system will bring a front with colder air, even leading to the potential for frost in some areas Saturday night, with lows in the mid 30’s.

AOCC LEADERS CONVENE AS FEDERAL ACTIONS SIGNAL NEW ERA

Article by KQEN News Radio

Douglas County Commissioner Tim Freeman, who serves as the President of the Association of O&C Counties, recently gathered with fellow AOCC board members at their quarterly meeting at Starfire Lumber in Cottage Grove.

A county release said the board is comprised of county commissioners representing member counties. The meeting featured guest speaker Kim Prill, Acting State Director for the Bureau of Land Management in Oregon/Washington. The group toured the new Starfire Lumber timber-built administration building, along with checking out the log yard, planning facilities and long-time thriving lumber mill.

The meeting and tour follow significant federal actions regarding O&C timberlands:

  • In January, Congress passed the FY26 Interior Appropriations Bill which corrects revisions made four decades ago and returns O&C counties to their historic share of timber receipts from federally managed timberlands.
  • In February, the U.S. Department of the Interior issued a “Notice of Intent” to initiate the development of a revised BLM Resource Management Plan governing the 2.5 million acres of O&C timberlands in western Oregon.
  • In March, the BLM invited Douglas County to be a cooperating agency for the upcoming revision to the Resource Management Plan. The first RMP revision cooperators meeting took place on Wednesday, March 18th.

Commissioner Freeman said, “These three actions are some of the most exciting achievements the Association of O&C Counties has had in many decades”. Freeman said, “For the last ten years, working with the Board of Directors of the AOCC and our amazing staff, with these series of actions, we have accomplished the opportunity for a solution that will save the western Oregon O&C counties facing insolvency.” Freeman concluded, “At the same time, recovering the local economy, creating family wage jobs and putting Douglas County and the other O&C Counties back in the position of being the ‘Timber Capital of the world”.

FORMER SUTHERLIN CITY MANAGER IN NEW ROLE AT YONCALLA

Article by KQEN News Radio

Former Sutherlin City Manager Jerry Gillham has recently taken on a new role as the Yoncalla City Administrator.

Gillham told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that he worked for the City of Sutherlin from April of 2012 until his retirement at the end of 2025. Gillham said he left the position in Sutherlin early to deal with multiple health issues. Gillham saw doctors at the Portland VA and Oregon Health Sciences University who he called “great”. He credited the medical staff and God for helping him to recover so that he could work again.

After discovering that the City of Yoncalla was seeking a new administrator, Gillham inquired on a Friday, received an email from Mayor Pauline Kingery the following Monday and was scheduled for an interview that Wednesday. Killham was sworn in on February 10th.

Gillham said of his new job, “It’s wonderful. I’m truly having the time of my life”.

H.O.P.E DRUG COURT TO CELEBRATE 112TH GRADUATAION MARCH 30TH

Article by KQEN News Radio

The H.O.P.E. Drug Court will celebrate its 112nd graduation ceremony on Tuesday, March 30th in the Cascade Hall of the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

The event will begin at 5:15 p.m. and will be presided over by the Honorable Judge Robert Johnson, who leads the adult drug court program.

Judge Johnson said, “These ceremonies remind us what recovery looks life in real life”. Judge Johnson said, “It takes hard work, accountability, and support. Drug court is built on the belief that people can change when they are given the structure, treatment, and encouragement needed to transform their lives.”

A H.O.P.E. Drug Court release said that drug courts have demonstrated measurable success both locally and nationwide. By focusing on treatment and accountability, these programs significantly reduce repeat offenses and strengthen public safety. In 2025, H.O.P.E. Drug Court had four graduation ceremonies which produced 20 graduates and resulted in over $4.22 million in savings to taxpayers.

This year’s graduation speaker is Jason Cornutt, a graduate of the 105th H.O.P.E. Drug Court program and a dedicated peer mentor with ADAPT. Through determination and growth, he has turned his life around and now helps others navigate their recovery journeys.

The graduation ceremony is open to the community.
