Roseburg Flag Giveaway and Time Capsule Project to Kick Off Local America 250 Efforts

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Roseburg community members will have an opportunity next weekend to receive a free American flag, learn more about proper flag care and take part in the early local lead-up to America’s 250th birthday.

A flag exchange and giveaway event is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Roseburg High School parking lot. The event is being organized as a community kickoff connected to America 250, the nationwide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

As part of the effort, Umpqua Valley Funeral Directors and Premier Insurance have provided 250 American flags for local households. Each flag has been folded by members of the Roseburg Sea Scouts and will be distributed with information about how to properly care for and display it.

The event is open to the community, and residents are invited to stop by during the four-hour window to receive a flag and an information guide.

Organizers say the giveaway is meant to encourage civic engagement and help local residents begin looking ahead to the nation’s milestone anniversary in 2026. The event also continues a connection between the two local sponsors that began several years ago through a Fourth of July celebration in 2020.

Both businesses said the event is rooted in a shared belief that local businesses have an important role in giving back to the communities they serve. Umpqua Valley Funeral Directors has served the Douglas County area since 2014, providing cremation, burial and memorial services. Premier Insurance is a local agency serving families across Douglas County with a range of insurance needs.

In addition to the flag giveaway, organizers will begin collecting items for a time capsule that is planned to be placed the day after Veterans Day 2026. Community members are invited to contribute an item for the capsule. More details about the project, including when the capsule will be opened, are expected to be released later. Current plans call for it to be opened in 10 years, with items collected through Veterans Day 2026.

Several local organizations and community groups are also expected to be present during the June 13 event. Participating groups include members of the Roseburg City Council, Lane House and the Douglas County Historical Society, the Elks Lodge, Walt’s Towing Co. and the City of Roseburg Fire Department.

Other community groups interested in taking part are encouraged to contact organizers for more information.

Questions about the event may be directed to David Hopkins with the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite.

Roseburg Disposal Showcases Student Artwork on Recycling Trucks

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Roseburg Disposal is bringing local student artwork to the streets in a big way.

The company recently unveiled new artwork displayed on its recycling trucks, featuring pieces created by two Roseburg High School students, Bailey and Sage. The project was done in collaboration with the high school art department, giving students an opportunity to create work that would be seen throughout the community.

After the winning pieces were selected, Roseburg Disposal invited the students to visit, see their artwork displayed on the trucks and receive recognition for their efforts. Bailey and Sage were each presented with a check for their outstanding work.

The artwork adds a creative and community-focused touch to Roseburg Disposal’s fleet, turning everyday recycling trucks into moving displays of local talent. For the students, the project offers a unique opportunity to have their work shared publicly in a way that will be seen by residents across Roseburg.

Roseburg Disposal said it was delighted to meet the students and showcase their artwork. The company also wished Bailey and Sage a bright future and continued success in their artistic endeavors.

The project highlights the value of supporting young artists and finding creative ways to celebrate student achievement in the community.

Oakland Community Theater to Present Free Annual Melodrama in the Park

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Oakland Community Theater will bring its annual summer play back to City Park this June with a free outdoor melodrama for the community.

This year’s production, “Choo-Choo Chicanery,” is described as “a comedy of romance, intrigue, and railroad ruin.” Written by John Burkhart and Bette Keehley, the show invites audience participation, with cheering and booing not only allowed, but required.

Performances will take place at City Park in Historic Oakland, located at SE 2nd Street and SE Maple Street, behind Stearns Hardware.

Showtimes are scheduled for:

  • Fridays and Saturdays
    June 19, 20, 26 and 27 at 7 p.m.
  • Sundays
    June 21 and 28 at 2 p.m.

All performances are free, though donations are welcome. Refreshments will also be available for purchase.

Those attending evening performances are encouraged to bring a chair, along with a blanket or jacket, as it can get cold near nightfall. Organizers also ask that pets be left at home.

The annual Melodrama in the Park has become a summer tradition in Historic Oakland, offering a lighthearted outdoor theater experience for families, residents and visitors alike.

Light Rain Monday Before Roseburg Warms Into the 90s by Saturday

Roseburg will start the week with rain before a steady warming trend brings sunshine and temperatures into the 90s by next weekend.

The National Weather Service in Medford said high clouds were moving into southern Oregon Sunday afternoon ahead of a warm front and incoming low-pressure system. The added cloud cover is expected to keep overnight temperatures warmer than recent nights.

Rain is expected in Roseburg on Monday, with a high near 64. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch are possible. Rain is expected to continue Monday night before transitioning to showers, mainly between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m., with a low around 53.

Forecasters said some instability may develop Monday night into Tuesday morning near Roseburg. However, any showers that form are expected to remain light and shallow.

Showers remain possible Tuesday morning before conditions begin to dry out. Tuesday’s high is expected to reach near 69, followed by partly cloudy skies Tuesday night and a low around 47.

Warmer and drier weather is expected to take over by midweek. Roseburg is forecast to reach near 76 on Wednesday, 83 on Thursday and 87 on Friday, with sunny skies each day.

By Saturday, the forecast calls for sunny skies and a high near 94 in Roseburg.

Looking ahead to next weekend, forecasters are watching the potential for an upper-level disturbance to slide down the Cascades Saturday or Sunday. The National Weather Service said that scenario has about a 30% chance of occurring. Other forecast solutions show a stronger ridge building over the region, which would push temperatures higher west of the Cascades.

For Roseburg, the main takeaway is a wet start to the week, followed by a quick warmup and increasing heat and fire weather concerns by next weekend.
