Firefighters Stop Small Grass Fire Near Care Facility in Roseburg

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Roseburg firefighters were called to the area of Aviation Drive and Edenbower Boulevard on Wednesday evening after a natural cover fire was reported nearby.

Crews were dispatched at 6:14 p.m. and arrived to find a fast-moving grass fire being pushed by the wind. The fire had burned about one acre of dry grass and blackberry bushes and was moving in the direction of a nearby care facility.

Firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control and finish mop-up at the scene. No injuries or damage to structures were reported.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Roseburg Fire Department used the incident as a reminder that wildland fires can move quickly, especially during dry and windy conditions. Residents are encouraged to have an evacuation plan, keep emergency supplies ready, sign up for local alerts, keep vehicles fueled when fire danger is high, protect important documents, and be prepared for possible smoke impacts.

Last Call: Spiderking Studios Seeking Extras for Horror Feature Film ‘IT CALLS’

Article by The Roseburg Receiver

Spiderking Studios is putting out a final call for extras for its upcoming independent horror feature film IT CALLS, with three filming opportunities scheduled in Coos and Douglas counties later this month.

Extras are needed to portray cultists in several scenes. The roles are non-union and unpaid, but organizers say the opportunity is a chance to gain on-set experience, meet other filmmakers and be part of a local independent horror production.

The first filming date is Friday, June 19, at the Coquille River Lighthouse at Bullards Beach near Bandon. Filming will take place during the late morning and early afternoon on the Oregon Coast. Extras will portray cultists on the beach and will wear gray robes. Rides from Roseburg to the coast and back are being organized, but space is limited. Anyone needing transportation is asked to RSVP as soon as possible.

A second opportunity is scheduled for Thursday, June 25, in Roseburg during the evening. Extras are needed to portray cultists for a dialogue scene. Craft services will be provided, and a well-known horror actress is expected to appear in the scene.

The third filming date is Saturday, June 27, in Lookingglass at night. That scene will feature a ritualistic sacrifice in the woods, with extras portraying robed cult members taking part in a ceremonial chant. Craft services will be provided, and a well-known horror actress will also be on set.

Anyone interested in participating in any of the filming dates can fill out the RSVP form here:

Organizers are also encouraging people to share the opportunity with anyone who may be interested in taking part.

Cooler Weather Moves In, But Roseburg Still Stays Warm as Thunderstorm Pattern Develops

Roseburg is finally getting a break from the worst of the heat, but it is not exactly cooling off.

The National Weather Service in Medford says the high pressure that brought the recent stretch of hot weather has moved east. In its place, a weak trough offshore will influence the region through Saturday, bringing slightly cooler temperatures and a chance of thunderstorms across parts of southern Oregon and northern California.

For Roseburg, temperatures are expected to stay warm today, likely reaching the mid to upper 90s. That is a little warmer than Wednesday, as a thermal trough moves inland, but the overall trend will be cooler heading into Friday and Saturday.

Forecasters said afternoon highs will still run above normal, but not as extreme as earlier this week. Instead of being 15 to 25 degrees above normal, temperatures are expected to settle closer to 5 to 10 degrees above normal. Saturday looks to be the coolest day before temperatures begin climbing again Sunday and early next week.

The bigger weather concern will be thunderstorms.

The best chance for storms today is expected south of the Oregon-California border, mainly across Siskiyou and Modoc counties. For Friday, thunderstorm chances increase across northern California and east of the Cascades, with some storms possibly pushing as far west as parts of Jackson and Josephine counties.

Roseburg is not expected to be in the main thunderstorm area, but the pattern is worth watching. Storms that do develop could bring lightning, small hail and strong outflow winds of 30 to 40 mph. Some storms may be a mix of wet and dry, which raises fire weather concerns where lightning occurs over dry fuels.

A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for several fire weather zones in southern Oregon and northern California from late tonight through Friday night, depending on location.

For Roseburg and much of Douglas County, the main takeaway is a slight cool down after the recent heat, but still warm afternoons, dry conditions and a broader regional thunderstorm pattern that could create fire weather concerns nearby.

Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to start climbing again Sunday, with a more noticeable warmup possible Monday and Tuesday. Forecasters said parts of the Rogue Valley could flirt with triple digits again early next week.
