Above normal temperatures and enhanced westerly breezes continue into early next week. This includes winds and low humidity early next week that are likely to be just below critical thresholds east of the Cascades. Gusty northeast winds will also continue at coastal ridges during the overnight hours through Sunday, strongest early on Sunday. There is a slight chance (10-15%) for late day thunderstorms Sunday and Monday for the east side and northern California and there is a very low chance (5%) for isolated thunderstorms Sunday night and Monday morning in Lake and Modoc. A dry cold front could bring critical conditions to the east side on Wednesday.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Students in Umpqua Community College’s Southern Oregon Wine Institute are celebrating a strong showing after wines produced through the college’s Wine Making & Viticulture program earned four medals in two recent wine competitions.

The awards highlight both the student work behind the bottles and the quality of Umpqua Valley grapes used in the program.

Most recently, UCC students earned two medals at the 2026 Pacific Northwest Wine Competition:

• Double Gold Medal for the 2023 Pinot Noir
• Silver Medal for the 2023 Tempranillo

The Pacific Northwest Wine Competition featured 644 entries judged through blind tastings by a panel of wine industry professionals. A Double Gold Medal is awarded only when every judge on the panel gives a wine a Gold rating.

The recognition followed another strong performance at the 4th Annual West Coast College & University Wine Festival, held June 13 at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California. It was UCC’s first time participating in the event.

At that competition, UCC students earned:

• Gold Medal for the 2023 Tempranillo
• Bronze Medal for the 2023 Pinot Noir

Both wines were made by students using grapes grown in the Umpqua Valley.

Joel Goodwillie, UCC winery manager, said the awards are a reflection of the students’ work from vineyard to bottle.

“The real story is what our students have accomplished,” Goodwillie said. “Every bottle recognized in these competitions was produced through the dedication, skill, and teamwork of our students. These awards reflect the hands-on education they receive and the pride they take in producing exceptional wines from Umpqua Valley fruit.”

Through the Wine Making & Viticulture program, students take part in each stage of the winemaking process, including vineyard management, harvest, fermentation, bottling, labeling, marketing and tasting room operations.

The Southern Oregon Wine Institute is located in the Danny Lang Teaching, Learning & Event Center and includes a commercial-scale teaching winery and a five-acre vineyard. The program is designed to prepare students for careers in wine production, vineyard management, winery operations and wine business.

UCC offers certificates in Wine Production, Vineyard Management and Winery/Tasting Room Management, giving students multiple pathways into Oregon’s growing wine industry.

College officials said the recent medals recognize more than the finished wines. They also point to the value of the program’s hands-on learning model, where students gain real-world experience while producing wines that can compete on a broader stage.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - The City of Roseburg is inviting the community to celebrate the completion of a long-awaited expansion at Brown Park, a neighborhood gathering space in southwest Roseburg designed to serve residents of all ages and abilities.

A ceremonial ribbon cutting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, at 3:30 p.m. at Brown Park, located at the corner of Harvard Boulevard and Francis Street.

The expanded park covers just under one acre and includes modern, inclusive playground equipment, accessible pathways, ADA-compliant parking, open green space and other amenities aimed at encouraging recreation, connection and outdoor play. City officials say the project was designed with accessibility in mind, creating a welcoming space for children of all abilities and for families throughout the neighborhood.

The project has been years in the making and was supported through community collaboration, grant funding, local donors and work by City staff. A local family donated $150,000 to help the City purchase the property, which also helped provide part of the required local match for funding through the Oregon Parks & Recreation Department’s Local Government Grant Program.

The City also plans to recognize those who helped make the park expansion possible. A memorial bench honoring the former property owner, whose vision helped support the expansion of Brown Park, has been installed at the site.

More improvements are expected later this summer. According to the City, a pavilion has already been purchased and is scheduled to be installed in the coming months.

“This project is the result of strong community partnerships and a shared commitment to expanding recreational opportunities in Roseburg,” said Velorie Ligon, Parks and Recreation Program Manager. “Brown Park provides a welcoming space that will serve neighborhood residents and visitors for generations.”

Members of the public are invited to attend the July 8 ceremony and join City officials, project partners, donors and community members in celebrating the opening of the expanded park.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Construction on the SE Stephens Street Improvement Project is scheduled to begin Monday, July 13, with work expected to continue through September.

The project will bring paving, sidewalk improvements and accessibility upgrades to the SE Stephens Street corridor in south Roseburg.

The work will include:

• Sidewalk improvements
• Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramp upgrades
• Road paving along SE Stephens Street
• New safety and accessibility improvements along the corridor

Sidewalk and ADA ramp improvements are planned at:

• SE Rice Avenue
• SE Roberts Avenue
• SE Burke Street
• SE Waite Avenue
• SE Haynes Avenue
• SE Brockway Avenue

Road paving will take place on SE Stephens Street from the southern city limits to beyond SE Brockway Avenue.

During construction, drivers and pedestrians should expect:

• Lane restrictions
• Periodic closures
• Nighttime paving to help reduce traffic impacts
• Pedestrian detours around active work zones
• Access to nearby homes and businesses to be maintained whenever possible

The City of Roseburg said the project is intended to improve safety and accessibility along the corridor and thanked the public for its patience while the work is completed.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. — The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will take part in a nationwide speed enforcement campaign beginning Monday, July 6, and continuing through Friday, July 31.

The enhanced patrols are funded through grants administered by the Oregon Department of Transportation. During the campaign, deputies will work overtime shifts throughout Douglas County, focusing on speed-related violations through both education and enforcement.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, speeding remains one of the leading factors in serious and fatal traffic crashes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to react to changing road conditions, increase stopping distances and make crashes more severe when they occur.

“Speed limits are established to keep everyone safe,” Sheriff John Hanlin said. “Our goal is not simply to write citations, but to encourage drivers to slow down, make responsible decisions behind the wheel, and help prevent crashes that can have lifelong consequences.”

The Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists to obey posted speed limits, avoid distractions such as cellphones and drive at a speed that is appropriate for current traffic, weather and roadway conditions.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - For The Love of Paws Veterinary Clinic is looking for a community-minded volunteer to join its Board of Directors and help guide the nonprofit clinic’s work serving families and pets across Douglas County.

The Roseburg-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit provides accessible and affordable veterinary care to local pet owners, including low-income households, veterans, seniors, community cat caretakers and families referred by shelters and emergency hospitals.

The organization is seeking someone interested in supporting its mission and helping strengthen the clinic’s role in the community. No veterinary background or specific professional credential is required.

Helpful qualities include an interest in accessible veterinary care, a willingness to learn how nonprofit boards operate, reliability, follow-through and a collaborative approach to decision-making. Experience in finance, fundraising, business, nonprofit work, legal services, marketing, veterinary care or community outreach may be helpful, but is not required.

Board members participate in discussions and vote on organizational matters. The board meets once per quarter, with meetings offered both remotely and in person. Additional meetings are rare and typically occur only during budget season or when major decisions need to be made.

The expected time commitment is about three to 10 hours per quarter, including meeting time and reviewing materials. The position is volunteer-based.

According to For The Love of Paws, the clinic provided more than 1,500 exams, surgeries and urgent-care visits in 2025. The organization also supported more than 800 program recipients through its Helping Hands Fund, Compassionate Fund, feral programs, veterans subsidies and spay/neuter assistance.

“Our mission is to make essential veterinary care accessible to everyone, regardless of income,” the organization said.

TENMILE, Ore. - A driver was taken to Mercy Medical Center after a rollover crash on Highway 42 near milepost 65 Thursday morning.

Tenmile Rural Fire District was dispatched shortly before noon after reports that a vehicle had left the roadway, struck a utility pole, rolled onto its roof and landed in a ditch. Initial reports also indicated the driver was trapped inside the vehicle.

The crash brought power lines down across both lanes of Highway 42, creating a dangerous scene for first responders and forcing the highway to be closed in both directions while crews worked to make the area safe.

Tenmile Fire unit 2094 arrived and established Highway 42 Command. Engine 2030 arrived seconds later, followed by a rescue unit, additional support vehicle and chief unit. Crews quickly assessed the scene, stabilized the overturned vehicle and began rescue operations.

Firefighters found one person trapped inside the vehicle. Using hydraulic rescue tools, Tenmile crews were able to extricate the driver, who was then turned over to Central Douglas Fire & Rescue for medical care and transport to Mercy Medical Center.

Tenmile RFD said it had five units and eight personnel on scene.

The response also included Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, Oregon State Police, the Oregon Department of Transportation and Douglas Electric Cooperative. OSP assisted with traffic control and the crash investigation, ODOT helped manage the roadway closure, and Douglas Electric responded to the damaged utility pole and downed power lines.

Officials used the crash as a reminder for drivers to slow down, stay alert and use caution around emergency scenes. Downed power lines should always be treated as dangerous, and the public should stay well away until utility crews can make the area safe.

Tenmile Fire said it wishes the patient a full and speedy recovery.

Public use restrictions will increase to Moderate across all lands protected by the Douglas Forest Protective Association beginning Friday, July 3, as temperatures rise and local fuels continue to dry out.

The change takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday and applies to all DFPA-protected lands.

Under Moderate restrictions, several activities are limited to the cooler parts of the day. Power saw use for non-industrial purposes, welding, cutting or grinding metal, mowing or cutting dry grass, and the use of power-driven equipment for property improvement are only allowed before 1:00 p.m. or after 8:00 p.m.

DFPA also announced that the Industrial Fire Precaution Level will increase to Level 2 beginning at 12:01 a.m. Monday, July 6. That change limits certain industrial operations within regulated use areas to the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

With the Fourth of July holiday approaching, DFPA is also reminding the public that fireworks are prohibited on all DFPA-protected lands. That includes private, county, state, Bureau of Indian Affairs and BLM-managed lands within the Douglas District.

Fire officials said the combination of dry fuels, warmer weather and holiday activity increases wildfire risk across the region. Residents and visitors are urged to avoid activities that could spark a fire and to leave fireworks to professional displays.
