Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California National Weather Service Medford, OR | 231 AM PDT Thu Jul 23 2026

A dry weather pattern is expected today into this weekend. Except for daily marine stratus intrusions along the coast, cloud cover will be minimal inland. Enhanced east side and northern California southwest to west winds are likely both Friday and Saturday during the afternoons and evenings. These winds will likely combine with very low humidity resulting in critical fire weather conditions. The dry pattern will likely persist much of next week.

DFPA Protected Lands

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A 40-year-old man died early Wednesday following a reported stabbing in an area of Roseburg commonly known as “The Point,” according to the Roseburg Police Department.

Police officers and Douglas County sheriff’s deputies responded to the 200 block of Southeast Pine Street at approximately 1:42 a.m. July 22.

When law enforcement arrived, officers found Patrick Shane Belleci, 40, suffering from a severe stab wound and bleeding heavily. Belleci was transported by Umpqua Valley Ambulance to Mercy Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

The Douglas County Major Crimes Team was activated to investigate the incident.

Investigators identified Tyler Loyd Whitehead, 30, as a suspect. Police said Whitehead left the scene before officers arrived but later surrendered to law enforcement near Winchester and Nash streets in Roseburg.

Whitehead was arrested and lodged at the Douglas County Jail on charges of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon.

The Roseburg Police Department thanked the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, Roseburg Fire Department and Umpqua Valley Ambulance for assisting with the response and investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities said no additional details are being released at this time.

Charges are accusations, and Whitehead is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Roseburg police have identified the pedestrian killed in a late-night collision on Diamond Lake Boulevard as 36-year-old China Anna-Marie Fields of Winston.

The collision was reported at approximately 11:42 p.m. Saturday, July 18, east of Northeast Pomona Street. Roseburg police officers responded along with fire and emergency medical crews.

Police said law enforcement had received reports shortly before the collision of a woman wearing dark clothing standing in the median of Diamond Lake Boulevard, waving her arms and reportedly moving into traffic in front of passing vehicles.

According to the preliminary investigation, a white Jeep Cherokee driven by 19-year-old Ryan Mays Jr. was traveling westbound in the inside lane when it struck Fields.

Fields was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mays was not injured and has been cooperating with investigators. Police said the collision does not appear to be criminal in nature based on the preliminary investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Roseburg Fire Department and Umpqua Valley Ambulance assisted Roseburg police at the scene.

Cowboy poetry, Western swing and stories inspired by life on the range will fill Riverbend Park as four performers come together for a special roundtable Friday night.

WINSTON, Ore. - Stories from the saddle, songs from the range and the traditions of the American West will take center stage Friday during Riverbend Live!’s Cowboy Poetry & Western Music Roundtable.

The free performance begins at 7 p.m. Friday, July 24, at the Riverbend Park Outdoor Amphitheater in Winston. Rather than featuring a single headlining act, the evening will bring Andy Hedges, Dakota Robinson, Kristyn Harris and Jake Riley together for a mix of music, poetry, humor and ranch-life storytelling.

Hedges is a Texas songster, guitarist, storyteller and collector of traditional cowboy songs and poems. Raised in the small community of Tokio, Texas, he developed an early interest in Western music while listening to his father’s collection of cowboy song recordings.

His performances stretch across several corners of American roots music, including classic cowboy poetry, lesser-known Western songs, Dust Bowl ballads and blues. Hedges also hosts the “Cowboy Crossroads” podcast, which features conversations with musicians and poets carrying Western traditions forward.

He has frequently performed with folk musician Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, made his Grand Ole Opry debut in 2023 and brought his album “Roll On, Cowboys” to Carnegie Hall in 2024.

Robinson’s poetry comes directly from his years working on ranches throughout Texas, Kansas, Wyoming and New Mexico. Long hours in the saddle eventually became an opportunity to build poems around the challenges, personalities and humor found in everyday cowboy life.

Now working as a full-time farrier in Texas, Robinson continues writing and performing poetry shaped by his experiences with cattle, horses and ranch work.

Harris will bring the musical side of the West to the roundtable. The Burleson, Texas, singer and songwriter is known for combining Western swing with original songs and familiar classics inspired by agricultural life.

Her performances feature rhythm guitar, yodeling, storytelling and a strong connection to her own experiences raising cattle and working with horses. Harris has toured Europe four times and has been named the International Western Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year six times.

Riley grew up in Colorado’s upper Arkansas Valley, where rodeo, roping and time spent helping on ranches sparked his interest in cowboy culture. He began writing poetry while still in school and later shared his work publicly at church and the Nebraska Cowboy Poetry Gathering.

His writing often takes a contemporary and animated approach to ranch life while still making room for the classic poems that helped shape the tradition. Riley has performed at gatherings across the West, including six appearances at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada.

Riverbend Live! performances generally run about two hours. Audience members may bring lawn chairs or blankets, along with outside food and picnic meals. A local food truck is also expected to be available. Pets and smoking are not permitted inside the concert area.

The performance is part of Riverbend Live!’s 30th anniversary season. The summer series concludes July 31 and Aug. 1 with the Riverbend Live! Youth Theater production of “Into the Woods JR.”

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A wintry adventure is coming to Roseburg in the middle of summer as Umpqua Actors Community Theatre prepares to open its production of Disney’s “Frozen: The Broadway Musical.”

Performances begin Thursday, July 23, at The Rose Theatre inside Roseburg High School and will continue through Sunday, Aug. 2.

Based on the popular animated film and inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Snow Queen,” the musical follows sisters Anna and Elsa, two princesses who grow up isolated inside the castle of Arendelle.

After Elsa’s hidden ice powers are revealed during her coronation, she flees into the mountains and unintentionally leaves the kingdom trapped in an endless winter. Anna sets out to find her sister and bring her home, receiving help along the way from ice harvester Kristoff, his reindeer Sven and the cheerful snowman Olaf.

The stage production combines the familiar story and songs with live music, puppetry and special effects. A 13-member pit orchestra led by Fremont Middle School music teacher Stacey Atwell-Keister will provide the music throughout the show.

Olaf will also appear as a life-size puppet controlled by the actor performing the role, adding another live-theater element to the character audiences know from the film.

The UACT production is directed by Melody Schwegel.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7 p.m. Sunday matinees begin at 2 p.m.

Adult tickets are $22, while tickets for children under 12 are $17. No passes will be accepted for this production.

The Rose Theatre is located at Roseburg High School, 400 W. Harvard Ave. Tickets may be purchased online, through the UACT box office, by calling 541-673-2125 or at the door when available.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Firefighters are responding to multiple reports of smoke across the Umpqua National Forest following thunderstorms that moved through the area Wednesday, July 22.

Forest officials said two fires have been confirmed so far. Both are being managed under a full-suppression strategy.

Engaged resources include fire engines, crews, bulldozers, rappel firefighters and aircraft. Additional resources are also heading to the area.

More smoke reports are expected through the evening as Forest Service personnel continue searching for new fires from the ground and through aerial detection.

Officials are asking visitors to watch for increased fire traffic on Forest roads and to give emergency vehicles and crews plenty of room to work.

Anyone who spots a new fire on the Umpqua National Forest should report it to the Roseburg Interagency Communications Center at 541-957-3325.

The Wits End Fire, which started Tuesday, July 21, has been extinguished.

SUTHERLIN, Ore. - Firefighters have completed mop-up operations on a grass fire that burned along southbound Interstate 5 near Sutherlin Thursday afternoon.

The Douglas Forest Protective Association said crews were dispatched at approximately 3:13 p.m. to a reported natural cover fire near milepost 134.

Firefighters from DFPA and Central Douglas Fire & Rescue responded to the scene, along with Oregon State Police. Crews found an estimated half-acre grass fire burning with a slow rate of spread.

The forward spread was quickly stopped, allowing officials to cancel additional resources that had been responding to the area.

DFPA reported in a 4:30 p.m. update that mop-up work had been completed and its resources were released from the scene. Traffic control was also no longer in place.

The Oregon Department of Transportation assisted with traffic control while firefighters worked along the interstate.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. DFPA said no additional information is expected to be released about the response.

The Umpqua National Forest will move to Stage 2 Public Use Restrictions beginning Friday, July 24, as high fire danger continues across the Forest.

Under the increased restrictions, campfires and other open flames will generally be prohibited outside of Forest Service-constructed concrete or metal fire rings at designated developed recreation sites. Campfires will not be allowed in wilderness areas, and chainsaw use will be prohibited throughout the Forest.

Campfires fueled by pressurized gas or propane will remain permitted. Cook stoves, lanterns and similar devices fueled solely by gas, propane, jellied petroleum or pressurized liquid fuel may also be used if they have an on-and-off switch and all flammable vegetation is cleared at least three feet from the flame.

Stage 2 restrictions include:

• Campfires, charcoal fires, briquette fires, pellet fires and other open fires are prohibited outside Forest Service-constructed fire rings at designated recreation sites.
• Campfires are prohibited in wilderness areas.
• Chainsaw use and other internal combustion engine-powered cutting equipment are prohibited.
• Smoking is prohibited except inside an enclosed vehicle or building, or in an area cleared of flammable material for at least three feet in every direction.
• Motorized vehicles may only be operated on designated roads and trails.
• Driving off National Forest System roads is prohibited, except in areas without vegetation within 10 feet of the roadway or when minimal travel over bare mineral soil is necessary to reach a dispersed campsite.
• Welding and the use of explosives are prohibited.

Forest officials are reminding visitors that fires inside approved Forest Service fire rings must be completely extinguished before a campsite is left unattended.

Campers should drown the fire with water, stir the ashes and carefully check for remaining heat. A fire should feel cold to the touch before anyone leaves the area.

The Umpqua National Forest remains under High Fire Danger.
