Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California National Weather Service Medford, OR | 350 AM PDT Tue Jul 21 2026

Hot today and Wednesday. Isolated thunderstorms are possible today with the highest risk near and north of Crater Lake and also over the east side. Thunderstorm coverage increases on Wednesday, with a focus again in the Cascades, but also the foothills of eastern Douglas County and over the east side in Oregon. This will increase potential for lightning-induced fire starts. Isolated thunderstorms could also impact the west side valleys and the Warner Mountains in NE California. Drier weather is likely Thursday into this weekend with enhanced east side winds along with lower humidity.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Music on the Half Shell continues its 2026 summer season tonight, Tuesday, July 21, with blues-rock guitarist and vocalist Garret T. Willie performing at the Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park.

The free concert begins at 7 p.m.

Willie, 26, has emerged as a rising voice in modern blues-rock with a sound built around gravelly vocals, powerful guitar work and deeply personal storytelling. His performances combine traditional blues influences with rock-and-roll energy and a modern edge shaped by his Indigenous roots.

His second album, “Bill’s Cafe,” was named after his grandfather’s pool hall cafe in Alert Bay, British Columbia. The project was developed during writing and recording sessions in Nashville with Grammy-winning producer Tom Hambridge, whose credits include work with Buddy Guy, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram and Susan Tedeschi.

The album explores themes of love, loss, addiction, ambition and life on the road while connecting Willie’s small-town upbringing with the blues and rock traditions that influenced him. His live performances are known for their intensity, with Willie sometimes playing guitar behind his head or moving into the crowd during solos.

Willie first gained wider attention with his debut album, “Same Pain.” The record reached the Top 20 on the United Kingdom Blues Albums chart and the U.S. Roots Music Blues Rock chart in 2023. He has also opened for artists including Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Fogerty, Kingfish and Joe Bonamassa.

Music on the Half Shell concerts are held Tuesday evenings at Stewart Park and are free to attend.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Aviva Health has been awarded more than $5 million to expand Douglas County’s dental workforce and improve how local healthcare providers share patient information.

The Oregon Health Authority awarded Aviva Health a combined $5,036,238.35 through its Rural Health Transformation Program Catalyst Awards.

Aviva Health received funding for two separate projects, making it one of only a small number of organizations statewide to receive multiple Catalyst Awards. The combined funding is the fifth-largest allocation in Oregon and the largest awarded to a Douglas County organization through the program.

“This investment represents an extraordinary opportunity for Aviva Health and Douglas County,” Aviva Health Marketing and Development Director Mark Tsuchiya said. “These projects address two of the greatest challenges facing rural healthcare today: developing the workforce our communities need and ensuring providers can seamlessly share information to deliver coordinated, high-quality care.”

Growing Douglas County’s Dental Workforce

One portion of the funding will support Aviva Health’s Grow Your Own Dental Workforce Initiative.

The project is designed to address the shortage of dental professionals in rural Oregon by creating additional opportunities for local students and future providers to receive training in Douglas County.

Plans include:

• Adding new dental operatories in Roseburg and Myrtle Creek
• Expanding clinical training capacity
• Creating education and career pathways with academic institutions across Oregon
• Increasing student clinical rotations, mentorships and preceptorships
• Supporting advanced certifications for dental assistants
• Encouraging students to train, live and eventually practice in rural communities

Aviva Health said the initiative will help develop a local pipeline of dental professionals while increasing access to dental services for patients.

Transition to OCHIN Epic

The second project will fund Aviva Health’s transition to the OCHIN Epic electronic health record system.

The platform is already used by other healthcare organizations in Douglas County and by Federally Qualified Health Centers throughout Oregon.

Moving to the shared platform is expected to improve communication between healthcare providers and give clinicians more timely access to patient information.

The transition is intended to:

• Improve coordination between healthcare organizations
• Streamline patient referrals
• Strengthen secure information sharing
• Connect primary care, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy and specialty services
• Provide patients with a more coordinated healthcare experience

Aviva Health said the new system will make it easier for providers to work together while reducing gaps in care.

Statewide Competition for Funding

The Catalyst Awards were highly competitive.

The Oregon Health Authority received 583 proposals from 353 organizations seeking more than $830 million. Approximately $160 million was available, representing less than 20% of the total amount requested.

The Rural Health Transformation Program supports community-based projects intended to improve health outcomes, increase access to care and strengthen healthcare systems in rural parts of Oregon.

“Our success reflects the strength of our partnerships and our shared commitment to improving health in Douglas County,” Tsuchiya said. “These projects will create lasting benefits by expanding educational opportunities, strengthening our local workforce and ensuring patients receive more coordinated, connected care close to home.”

Aviva Health is a nonprofit healthcare organization founded in 1991. It provides medical, dental and behavioral health services through 11 clinic sites in Roseburg, Myrtle Creek, Sutherlin, Glide and Drain, along with a Teen Health Center at Roseburg High School.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A piece of Roseburg history is shining once again as the original Abby’s Legendary Pizza neon sign returns to the company’s Stephens Street location.

The carefully restored sign welcomed customers throughout the 1960s and 1970s and is now back at the restaurant where Abby’s story began in 1964. Its return is part of a three-day celebration marking the original parlor’s major remodel.

On Tuesday, guests can meet players from the Doc Stewarts baseball team and collect autographs. Wednesday’s activities will include a visit from Wildlife Safari animals, along with appearances by Abby’s founders Abby Broughton, Connie Harrell and Bob “Skinny” Harrell.

Special pricing on the Abby’s Special and Skinny’s Special will also be available throughout the celebration.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect Wednesday for portions of southern Oregon as thunderstorms could produce abundant lightning over dry vegetation.

The National Weather Service in Medford said the watch will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday, July 22. Areas covered include the Umpqua National Forest, Siskiyou Mountains, eastern Rogue Valley, southern Oregon Cascades, Klamath Basin and parts of south-central Oregon.

Forecasters said thunderstorms are expected to move north to northeast at approximately 15 to 20 mph. Most storms are expected to produce rain, but dry lightning strikes may occur outside the wetter portions of the storms.

Lightning over dry fuels could result in numerous new wildfire starts across the region. Any fires that develop may spread rapidly, and a high number of new starts could strain firefighting resources and overwhelm initial attack crews.

Thunderstorms may also produce isolated wind gusts of up to 45 mph, which could contribute to rapid fire growth.

Residents are urged to follow all current fire restrictions and avoid activities that may cause sparks. The National Weather Service also recommends preparing an emergency go kit, gathering important documents and essential items, and keeping vehicle fuel tanks filled.

A Fire Weather Watch means critical fire weather conditions are possible. The watch could be upgraded to a Red Flag Warning as the forecast develops.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Hot temperatures will continue across the Roseburg area Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by an increasing chance of thunderstorms that could bring frequent lightning, gusty winds and small hail.

The National Weather Service in Medford said inland valleys west of the Cascades will generally reach the lower 90s to around 103 degrees during the hottest part of the week. Temperatures are expected to run approximately 5 to 10 degrees above normal.

Tuesday is expected to remain mostly hot and dry around Roseburg, although isolated thunderstorms may develop over higher terrain, particularly near and north of Crater Lake.

The thunderstorm threat increases Wednesday, with the greatest concern focused on the Cascades, eastern Douglas County foothills and areas east of Roseburg. Forecasters said some storms could also reach portions of the valleys west of the Cascades.

Any storms that develop Wednesday are expected to move north to northeast and may produce frequent lightning, small hail, heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts. The strongest storms are most likely over the Cascades, the eastern Douglas County foothills and northwestern Klamath County.

The storms are expected to contain more moisture than typical summer thunderstorms, but their relatively fast movement could still allow lightning to strike outside areas receiving significant rainfall. That could increase the risk of new wildfire starts on dry vegetation.

A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect Wednesday for portions of southern Oregon, including the Umpqua National Forest and the western slopes and foothills of the Cascades.

Thunderstorm chances are expected to decrease Thursday as the unstable air shifts east. Drier weather will settle into the region Friday and continue through the weekend, although afternoon and evening winds are expected to increase.

Temperatures should gradually cool later in the week, but dry conditions, low humidity and stronger winds may allow any new fires to spread quickly.
