Varying amounts of mid and high clouds can be expected today with some showers, but probably no lightning. High temperatures will be near or several degrees lower than on Sunday due to thicker cloud cover. Hotter weather returns Tuesday and Wednesday. A few thunderstorms are possible Tuesday with the highest risk near and north of Crater Lake and also over the east side. Greater coverage of thunderstorms is likely on Wednesday, to include portions of the west side valleys, but with a focus near and east of the Cascades and in NE California. Drier weather is likely late in the week with enhanced east side winds.

DFPA Protected Lands

DIAMOND LAKE, Ore. - A 71-year-old Illinois man died Saturday afternoon after falling from a pontoon boat at Diamond Lake, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to the lake at approximately 2:17 p.m. July 18 after receiving a report that a person had fallen overboard and disappeared beneath the water.

The man was identified as William Harry Bailey of Bethalto, Illinois. Bailey was visiting Diamond Lake with family members for a reunion. The family had rented a pontoon boat earlier in the day to spend time on the lake.

Investigators said Bailey and his sister moved to the bow of the boat to take a photograph. As they stood near the front, the bow dipped into the water and the stern rose, causing both of them to lose their balance and fall into the lake.

Witnesses told deputies that Bailey pushed his sister away from the front of the boat to prevent her from falling into its path. Bailey then fell directly in front of the moving pontoon, which passed over him.

Bailey briefly resurfaced before disappearing beneath the water.

Family members immediately began searching and called 911. Deputies, firefighters and other emergency personnel searched near the location where Bailey was last seen but were unable to initially find him.

Divers with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office later located and recovered Bailey’s body from the lake. The Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office was notified.

The Sheriff’s Office expressed its condolences to Bailey’s family and friends.

Diamond Lake Resort, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, Oregon State Police, Umpqua Valley Ambulance, REACH Air Medical Services and the Oregon State Marine Board assisted with the response.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A pedestrian was killed Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle on Diamond Lake Boulevard in Roseburg.

Roseburg police said officers and emergency crews responded at approximately 11:42 p.m. July 18 to a reported vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision east of Northeast Pomona Street.

Shortly before the crash, law enforcement had received reports of a woman wearing dark clothing standing in the median, waving her arms and reportedly moving into traffic in front of passing vehicles.

A preliminary investigation found that a white Jeep Cherokee driven by 19-year-old Ryan Mays Jr. was traveling westbound in the inside lane when it struck the woman.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released pending confirmation of her identity and notification of her family.

Mays was not injured and is cooperating with investigators. Police said the collision does not currently appear to be criminal in nature, though the investigation remains ongoing.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Roseburg Fire Department and Umpqua Valley Ambulance assisted at the scene.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A Roseburg man was found dead Thursday evening following a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on Roberts Creek Road in the Green District.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said deputies began searching for 24-year-old Jarod Michael Whitlock after his mother reported him missing at approximately 6 p.m. on July 16. She told deputies Whitlock had not reported to work for two days.

Deputies located Whitlock shortly after 8 p.m. in the 8700 block of Roberts Creek Road. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators determined Whitlock had been riding a 2025 Kawasaki Ninja eastbound on Roberts Creek Road after traveling from Gateway Road.

Evidence at the scene indicated the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway and continued approximately 50 yards before coming to a stop.

Whitlock was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office extended its condolences to Whitlock’s family and friends.

Central Douglas Fire and Rescue assisted deputies at the scene.

TOKETEE, Ore. - Rescue crews used a rope system to lift an injured man from the North Umpqua River on Friday after he jumped about 60 feet into the water near Toketee Falls.

Douglas County emergency dispatchers received a report of an injured person at about 10:30 a.m. on July 17.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, 20-year-old Angel Antonio Ceja of Oahu, Hawaii, was traveling with a friend and visiting locations where he could record cliff-jumping videos to post online.

Ceja had reportedly watched videos of other people jumping from a large log suspended approximately 60 feet above the river, about 200 feet upstream from Toketee Falls. He then attempted the jump himself.

Ceja dislocated his right shoulder when he struck the water. He was able to get out of the river by pulling himself onto a partially submerged log and then onto a small rock shelf, but he could not climb back to the trail.

Crews established a steep-angle rope rescue system and raised Ceja from the gorge in a rescue litter. After reaching the trail, he was able to walk the remaining distance to a waiting ambulance.

Ceja was transported to Mercy Medical Center for treatment.

The rescue involved personnel from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Glide Rural Fire Protection District, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and Umpqua Valley Ambulance.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A 25-year-old Roseburg man died Thursday morning after crashing a motorcycle on West Lookingglass Road south of Roseburg.

Oregon State Police said troopers responded to the crash near the 1200 block of West Lookingglass Road at approximately 10:50 a.m.

According to OSP, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies had pursued the motorcycle roughly 10 to 15 minutes before the crash. Deputies discontinued the pursuit before the wreck occurred.

Roseburg police later saw the motorcycle traveling northbound on West Lookingglass Road at a high rate of speed shortly before the crash. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Roseburg Police Department requested that OSP conduct the crash investigation.

The preliminary investigation found that the motorcyclist, identified as Jackie Pearson Paul Willis of Roseburg, lost control while attempting to travel between lanes of traffic at an extremely high rate of speed. The motorcycle then crashed in the roadway.

Willis was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The investigation remains ongoing. Oregon State Police did not release additional information.

OAKLAND, Ore. - Historic Oakland will host its Vintage Street Fair on Saturday, July 25, bringing vendors, live music and classic cars to the community.

The family-friendly event will feature antiques, vintage items, collectibles, repurposed goods and other unique finds. Visitors can also enjoy food and beverages while exploring downtown Oakland.

The street fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Locust Street. Admission is free.

Historic Oakland is accessible from Interstate 5 using Exit 138 from the north or Exit 140 from the south.
