Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California National Weather Service Medford, OR | 315 AM PDT Fri Jul 17 2026

Gusty winds combined with low RH are expected east of the Cascades and in the Shasta Valley this afternoon. Though not to critical levels, it will remain hot, dry, and breezy this weekend. This is followed by a slight chance for afternoon thunderstorms Monday through Wednesday, mainly east of the Cascades and across Northern California.

DFPA Protected Lands

SALEM, Ore. - From mountaintop cameras that scan the horizon for smoke to aircraft capable of mapping fires through darkness and heavy haze, technology is playing an increasingly important role in how Oregon detects and responds to wildfires.

The Oregon Department of Forestry is using a growing collection of digital tools to locate new fires sooner, guide firefighters in the field, track resources and give emergency managers a clearer picture of changing conditions across the state.

Detection Cameras Monitor Thousands Of Acres

ODF now has 96 operational wildfire detection camera sites positioned throughout Oregon.

The cameras continuously monitor large areas of forestland and are supported by software that can alert operators when it detects possible smoke. Human operators also watch the feeds and may identify a developing fire before an automated notification is generated.

When smoke is spotted, an augmented mapping system helps estimate its location. That information can then be sent to dispatchers and responding firefighters.

ODF also works with fire protection associations and other agencies through the Oregon Wildfire Detection Camera Interoperability Committee. The group is focused on improving coordination between organizations that use camera networks for early fire detection.

The goal is to find fires while they are still small, reduce suppression costs and limit potential damage to communities and natural resources.

Multi-Mission Aircraft Expands Aerial Capabilities

ODF’s Multi-Mission Aircraft program provides aerial support for wildfire detection, mapping, disaster response, aerial ignition operations and supply delivery.

Since the program began in 2020, the aircraft have detected 149 fires, completed 17 mapping missions and flown seven operational support missions, according to ODF.

The agency recently invested in a Twin Otter aircraft equipped with several advanced systems, including:

• Forward-looking infrared sensors
• Night vision equipment
• An augmented reality system
• An artificial intelligence-assisted mapping scanner

The aircraft can collect and transmit information from above a fire, helping crews understand its location, size and movement. Infrared technology can also help identify heat through smoke or during nighttime operations.

ODF said demand for the aircraft continues to increase as more incident commanders incorporate aerial intelligence into fire operations.

Online System Helps Residents Check Burning Rules

Technology is also being used to help residents determine whether outdoor burning is allowed in their area.

The Before You Burn website and mobile application provide location-specific information about burning restrictions and prevention requirements.

Users can enter an address to learn whether burning is currently permitted. When burning is allowed, the system provides information about local requirements, including whether the resident must register the burn or obtain a permit.

The free service is available at beforeyouburn.net.

FireWeb Replaces Aging Reporting System

ODF recently began using FireWeb, a new platform that replaces the agency’s approximately 20-year-old FIRES database.

FireWeb collects and reports incident information while also supporting dispatch and geographic information system functions. The platform helps dispatchers track incidents and deploy resources more efficiently.

Because the system is web-based, ODF can also exchange information with federal reporting platforms and conduct more detailed analysis of wildfire data.

Drones Assist With Mapping And Firefighter Safety

ODF’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems Program has expanded since it was established in 2017.

Drones are used to locate fires, map incident boundaries, identify remaining hot spots and gather information in terrain that may be difficult or dangerous for firefighters to access.

The aircraft can provide crews and incident commanders with real-time situational awareness without placing personnel directly in hazardous areas.

ODF’s first unmanned aircraft mission took place during the Eagle Creek Fire. A fixed-wing drone was used to gather intelligence when thick smoke limited visibility.

The agency said the mission demonstrated how unmanned aircraft could provide useful information during conditions that might otherwise prevent traditional aerial observation.

Statewide Mapping Brings Fire Information Together

The State of Oregon Fire Situation Analyst, known as SOFSA, serves as a shared statewide mapping and information system for ODF and the Oregon State Fire Marshal.

The Intterra-based platform brings together information from multiple official sources, including ODF’s FireWeb system and national dispatch databases.

SOFSA can display:

• Active wildfire information
• Weather and fire environment conditions
• Land ownership boundaries
• Satellite fire detections
• Lightning activity
• Wildfire detection camera information
• Smoke data
• Incident action plan information

The platform is also used to view infrared imagery, maps and video collected by ODF’s Multi-Mission Aircraft. Information from active flights can be displayed in near-real time.

ODF said it expects technology to become even more integrated into its work as wildfire detection systems, aircraft equipment, mapping platforms and unmanned aircraft continue to improve.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A 64-year-old Roseburg man died after his kayak overturned while traveling down the North Umpqua River near Winchester, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a reported water rescue at Amacher Park at approximately 12:24 p.m. Thursday, July 9.

Investigators said Charles Robert Jensen was kayaking with a friend from Amacher Park toward Hestness Landing when his kayak overturned in the first rapid.

Jensen went underwater and briefly resurfaced before becoming submerged again. His friend was able to pull him from the river and onto nearby rocks, where CPR was immediately started.

Authorities believe Jensen was underwater for approximately one minute.

Firefighters and emergency medical personnel continued lifesaving efforts after arriving at the scene, but Jensen could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office responded and assumed responsibility for the death investigation. Jensen’s name was released Thursday after his family had been notified.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office extended its condolences to Jensen’s family and friends.

Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and Oregon State Police assisted at the scene.

Firefighters have made significant progress on five small wildfires burning in the Umpqua National Forest, with each fire either fully lined, contained or controlled as of Thursday evening.

The update was released by the Umpqua National Forest at 6:30 p.m. on July 16.

• Loafing Fire, Fire No. 259: Located northeast of Elephant Mountain. The fire is estimated at one-tenth of an acre, with rappellers on scene. It is 100% lined.
• Hidden Fire, Fire No. 254: Located northeast of Trap Mountain. The fire is estimated at one-fourth of an acre and is 100% lined.
• Trap Fire, Fire No. 255: Located north of Trap Mountain. The fire is estimated at 1.11 acres and is 100% lined.
• Elephant Fire, Fire No. 256: The fire has been declared controlled.
• Watson Butte Fire, Fire No. 257: The fire has been contained.

Forest officials are reminding visitors to take precautions to prevent human-caused wildfires. Campfires, including those inside Forest Service-built fire rings at designated recreation sites, must be completely extinguished before leaving.

Officials recommend drowning the fire with water, stirring the ashes and checking the area with the back of a hand. The fire should feel completely cold before the campsite is left.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Downtown Roseburg businesses will stay open late Friday, July 31, for an evening of live music, local food, shopping and special activities during the return of Fifth Friday.

The event will run from 5 to 8 p.m. at participating businesses throughout downtown. It is organized by Origami Creative Co. LLC, (re)Discover Downtown Roseburg and downtown merchants.

Rather than closing streets for a traditional festival, Fifth Friday activities will take place inside participating businesses. Downtown streets will remain open to traffic, and normal parking areas will remain available throughout the evening.

Visitors will be able to explore locally owned stores, meet artists and makers, find special promotions and experience businesses they may not have visited before.

Food and refreshments planned for the evening include:

• Two food trucks
• A Roma-style pizza pop-up
• A cupcake and cookie vendor
• Samples and refreshments at participating businesses
• Food available from downtown restaurants

Live music will be offered at three downtown venues. Two of the venues will have no cover charge, while one will require separate paid admission.

Participating businesses have also been encouraged to offer food pop-ups, product samples, live entertainment and other special in-store experiences.

“Fifth Friday is all about showcasing the incredible variety our downtown businesses have to offer,” said Eric Andrews, organizer of (re)Discover Downtown Roseburg. “Each month brings something a little different, and July is a great opportunity to enjoy local food, live music, shopping, and the welcoming atmosphere that makes downtown Roseburg a destination.”

Visitors can explore the event at their own pace. Printed guides showing participating businesses and scheduled activities will be available throughout downtown on the evening of the event.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Roseburg is headed into a warm and mostly sunny weekend, with temperatures expected to climb into the low 90s by Sunday.

Friday will begin partly sunny before skies gradually clear. The afternoon high is expected to reach about 85 degrees, with light north winds becoming north-northwest at 5 to 10 mph.

Conditions will remain mostly clear Friday night as temperatures fall to around 53 degrees.

The weekend forecast includes:

• Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 89. North winds of 5 to 9 mph are expected during the afternoon.
• Saturday night: Clear, with a low around 55.
• Sunday: Sunny and warmer, with a high near 91.
• Sunday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58.

The National Weather Service said high pressure will build across the region through Sunday, producing temperatures about 5 to 10 degrees above normal. Some inland valleys elsewhere in Southern Oregon and Northern California could reach the upper 90s or low 100s.

Hot, dry and breezy conditions will also keep fire danger elevated across the region. The most critical conditions Friday are expected east of the Cascades and in portions of Klamath, Lake and Modoc counties, where gusty winds will combine with low humidity.

Smoke from the East Evans Creek Fire is expected to continue affecting portions of southwest Oregon, particularly eastern Douglas County, northern Jackson County and Klamath County. Shifting winds could also push smoke into other nearby valleys at times.

Looking ahead, forecasters are monitoring the possibility of thunderstorms Monday through Wednesday. The greatest chances remain east of the Cascades and south of the Siskiyous, while considerable uncertainty remains about how much moisture will reach the region.
