Gusty winds combined with low RH are expected east of the Cascades and in the Shasta Valley this afternoon and again Friday afternoon. These conditions peak Friday with critical fire weather conditions likely for southeast Klamath, southwest Lake, and Modoc counties. Though backing off slightly from critical levels, hot, dry, and breezy conditions will continue during the weekend. Then a slight chance for thunderstorms is expected at least on Monday and Tuesday, mainly east of the Cascades.

DFPA Protected Lands

ROSEBURG, Ore. - The Umpqua Economic Development Partnership has appointed Jeana Beam as its new executive director, placing her at the helm of the organization’s economic development efforts across Douglas County.

Beam began the position immediately and will oversee programs focused on helping existing businesses grow, attracting investment, strengthening the local workforce and building partnerships between public and private organizations.

Her responsibilities will include working with local governments, businesses, schools and community organizations on initiatives intended to create family-wage jobs, support entrepreneurs and improve the region’s long-term economic outlook.

Matt Kowal, outgoing chair of the UEDP Board of Directors, said Beam’s community involvement and collaborative approach made her a strong choice to lead the organization.

Beam said she plans to begin by listening to residents, business owners and community partners while building on the organization’s existing work.

“Douglas County has always been a place where people come together to solve challenges and create opportunities,” Beam said. “I look forward to listening, learning and working alongside our business leaders, community partners and residents.”

The appointment comes as UEDP continues concentrating on several regional priorities, including:

• Retaining and expanding existing businesses
• Recruiting new employers and investment
• Addressing workforce needs
• Supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses
• Improving Douglas County’s regional competitiveness
• Encouraging greater economic diversity and resilience

UEDP is a public-private partnership serving Douglas County and the broader Umpqua region. The organization works with businesses and community partners on recruitment, expansion, strategic planning and economic development projects.

WINSTON, Ore. - Award-winning guitarist and vocalist Ronnie Baker Brooks will bring a high-energy blend of Chicago blues, rock, funk and soul to the Riverbend Live! stage this Friday.

The free concert begins at 7 p.m. Friday, July 17, at the Riverbend Park Outdoor Amphitheater in Winston. Brooks is the fourth featured performer in Riverbend Live!’s 30th anniversary season.

Brooks grew up surrounded by blues music as the son of legendary Chicago guitarist and Blues Hall of Famer Lonnie Brooks. He received his first guitar at age nine but had to work his way onto the stage, beginning his professional career as a roadie for his father’s band.

He later played bass before becoming the band’s full-time second guitarist. Brooks spent 12 years performing alongside his father, gaining experience while sharing stages with artists including B.B. King, Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and Taj Mahal. He also learned directly from blues musicians including Albert Collins and Willie Dixon.

Brooks eventually stepped out on his own, developing a sound that remains rooted in traditional Chicago blues while incorporating elements of rock, funk and soul. His performances are known for soulful vocals, energetic stage presence and powerful guitar work.

His latest album, Blues In My DNA, was released by Alligator Records in 2024 and features 11 original songs exploring his family history, musical influences and experiences. The album was produced by Jim Gaines, whose credits include work with Santana, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Luther Allison.

The project earned Brooks three Blues Music Awards in 2025:

• Contemporary Blues Artist of the Year
• Contemporary Blues Album of the Year for Blues In My DNA
• Song of the Year for the album’s title track

The Friday performance is free and open to the public. Riverbend Live! organizers encourage those attending to:

• Bring blankets or lawn chairs
• Bring dinner and drinks, if desired
• Visit the rotating food trucks expected to be available
• Leave pets at home
• Avoid smoking inside the concert area

Shows generally last about two hours.

MYRTLE CREEK, Ore. - Firefighters stopped the spread of a vegetation fire Wednesday afternoon near the 500 block of Big Lick Lane in Myrtle Creek.

The fire was initially reported at approximately 2:02 p.m. and was estimated to be about one acre. Crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association and several rural fire departments responded to the scene.

By 2:30 p.m., firefighters had completed a hose lay around the entire perimeter of the fire. Additional resources that had been requested were canceled as crews transitioned into mop-up operations, checking the area and extinguishing remaining hot spots.

All aircraft assigned to the incident were released by 3:10 p.m.

Rural fire departments assisting DFPA included Canyonville-South Umpqua Fire Department, Riddle Fire Protection District, Tri City Rural Fire Protection District and Myrtle Creek Fire Department.

DFPA’s response included six engines, an air attack platform, a Type 2 helicopter, a five-person squad, a bulldozer and command personnel.

No injuries were reported in the updates provided Wednesday afternoon.

A Level 1 “Be Ready” evacuation notice has been issued for parts of southern Douglas County as the East Evans Creek Fire continues burning near the Douglas-Jackson county line.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office issued the notice Wednesday for residents along Tiller Trail Highway from mileposts 38 to 41, extending to the county border. The evacuation area also stretches west from Wildcat Ridge to the Douglas-Jackson county line and includes Zones DOU-1012 and DOU-1015.

All addresses located within those boundaries are included in the notice.

A Level 1 evacuation notice means residents should be aware of the potential danger and begin preparing in case conditions worsen. People in the affected area are encouraged to monitor official emergency information, gather important belongings and make plans for pets, livestock and family members who may need additional assistance.

Residents who are unsure whether their property is inside the evacuation area can view the interactive evacuation map at www.dcso.com/evacuations.

The sheriff’s office is also encouraging Douglas County residents to register for Douglas Alerts at www.dcso.com/alerts. The notification system is used to send emergency information, including wildfire evacuation notices.

Residents who already have an account should make sure their contact information is current. Assistance is available by calling 541-440-6025 or emailing douglasalerts@douglascountyor.gov.

SUTHERLIN, Ore. - Music Off Central continues tonight with Sleepless Truckers, bringing a mix of outlaw country, Americana and Southern rock to Central Park in Sutherlin.

The free concert begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at Sutherlin Central Park, located along East Dean Avenue. Food trucks are scheduled to begin serving at 5:30 p.m.

Sleepless Truckers delivers a rough-edged country sound influenced by red dirt music and Southern rock. The group puts its own spin on songs associated with Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Johnny Paycheck and David Allan Coe.

The evening’s scheduled food truck lineup includes:

Music Off Central is designed as a family-friendly Thursday night gathering, with live music, dinner options and access to the park’s splash pad. Organizers ask visitors to keep pets leashed, clean up after themselves and avoid smoking in the event area.

Three performances will remain after tonight’s concert:

• July 30: Super Diamond, a Neil Diamond tribute
• Aug. 6: Roll On, an Alabama tribute
