Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California National Weather Service Medford, OR | 305 AM PDT Mon Jul 13 2026

Warm seasonable temperatures combined with dry conditions will persist this week. Isolated dry thunderstorms are possible starting this afternoon and continuing through Wednesday for mainly northern California and eastside areas. Tuesday has the highest chance for both areal coverage and the overall threat of thunderstorms, which could produce lightning over dry fuels.

DFPA Protected Lands

Saving Grace Humane Society is preparing to follow the yellow brick road for its biggest fundraising event of the year.

The organization’s annual Paws for a Cause celebration returns August 28 at Melrose Vineyards. This year’s theme, “Wizard of Paws: There’s No Place Like Home,” puts a playful Oz-inspired spin on an evening dedicated to helping Douglas County animals find safe and loving homes.

Guests will be treated to appetizers, dinner, local wine and beer, live and silent auctions, and stories about some of the pets and families helped by Saving Grace.

“There truly is no place like home, and every animal deserves the chance to find one,” Saving Grace Development Director Melissa Owens said.

Owens said the fundraiser celebrates what community support makes possible. Money raised through ticket sales, donations, sponsorships and auction bids will help provide shelter, veterinary care and a pathway home for animals in need.

Tickets are $100 per person, with tables for eight available for $800. Admission includes appetizers, dinner, and wine or beer tickets.

The annual fundraiser helps sustain Saving Grace’s animal sheltering and adoption work, along with community programs such as its pet food bank and low-cost spay and neuter services.

For one special evening, animal lovers can enjoy dinner and drinks at Melrose Vineyards, bid on auction items and help more local pets discover that there really is no place like home.

Firefighters from several Douglas County agencies have been sent south to help battle the East Evans Creek Fire in Jackson County, where nearly 1,000 personnel are now working under a unified command structure.

Task Force ST01 left for the fire Saturday evening with personnel from Roseburg Fire, North Douglas County Fire & EMS, Sutherlin Fire, Riddle Fire Protection District, Tenmile Rural Fire District and Central Douglas Fire & Rescue.

The Douglas County crews are joining a large response focused on protecting homes and strengthening control lines around the fire, which was estimated at 3,152 acres Sunday evening.

The fire began Friday afternoon northeast of Medford after a vehicle crashed into a power pole, igniting dry vegetation near East Evans Creek Road. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what caused the crash.

Strong winds and high temperatures led to increased activity Sunday, particularly along the northwestern side of the fire. A large column of smoke became visible as flames burned through additional vegetation, but officials said firefighters successfully held the established control lines.

Air tankers made more than 20 retardant drops during the day, while helicopters dropped water on trees and other areas of intense heat. Firefighters on the ground continued building direct fireline where terrain and conditions allowed, while using roads and previously constructed firelines in harder-to-reach areas.

The reported acreage could increase again following additional infrared mapping. Officials said some of the northwestern control line was constructed away from the active fire’s edge, allowing vegetation inside the perimeter to continue burning.

Structural firefighters assigned through the Oregon State Fire Marshal spent Sunday working around homes inside and near the fire area. Crews extinguished hidden hot spots, removed flammable vegetation and improved access for engines and other emergency equipment.

Patrols also continued through nearby neighborhoods to watch for embers, smoke and new fires that could threaten structures.

Approximately 1,000 firefighters, support personnel and incident management staff are currently assigned to the response. No injuries or illnesses have been reported among those working on the fire.

Several areas remain under Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 evacuation notices. A shelter for residents and domestic pets is open at Hanby Middle School in Gold Hill. Horses can be sheltered at the Jackson County Expo in Central Point, although owners are asked to call 541-776-7206 before arriving to confirm space is available.

Crews working overnight were expected to take advantage of cooler temperatures to improve control lines, search for fire outside the perimeter and continue mop-up work near homes along the southern portion of the fire.

DRAIN, Ore. - One of Oregon’s longest-running community celebrations will return to northern Douglas County later this month.

The North Douglas County Fair is scheduled for July 24 through July 26 on the grounds of the Drain Civic Center and the historic Methodist Church. Established in 1922, organizers describe it as the oldest continuously held fair in Oregon. The event brings together residents from Drain, Yoncalla, Elkton, Rice Hill, Scottsburg and Curtin.

Although the fair officially opens Friday, preparations will begin earlier in the week. Community members entering items in the exhibit hall can drop them off from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, or from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, July 23. Exhibit judging begins Thursday evening.

The exhibit hall gives local residents an opportunity to display homegrown produce, flowers, baked goods, canned foods, textiles, photography, artwork, crafts and other projects. Ribbons and cash prizes are available in a variety of categories.

Friday Focuses on Kids and Teens

The fair opens at noon Friday, along with the exhibit hall, vendor market, ice cream parlor and water slide.

Kid Day at the Fair begins at 3 p.m. with photo booths, a water slide, temporary tattoos, tractor rides, a bubble station and parachute activities. The WOWtruck opens at 4 p.m., when several traditional fair competitions will also begin.

Friday afternoon’s contests include a diaper derby, sack races, an egg-and-spoon race, a pie-eating contest and a dime toss.

Teen Night begins at 7 p.m. and will include the North Douglas County Fair queen coronation, Teen Take Over, cornhole, basketball, Connect 4, face painting, a relay and additional activities. A family movie is scheduled for 8:30 p.m., with the fair closing at 10 p.m.

Parade, Car Show and Live Music Planned Saturday

Saturday begins with the annual fair parade at 10 a.m. The fairgrounds, exhibit hall, vendor market and water slide will also open at that time.

The One More Time Marching Band and car show begin at 11 a.m. At noon, visitors can stop by the ice cream parlor, watch the opening of the WOWtruck, meet the fair princesses or enter the cornhole tournament.

Booher’s Family Band will perform at 1 p.m., followed by the pie auction at 3 p.m. The lumberjack games begin at 4 p.m.

A merchant raffle and cake walk are planned for 6 p.m., followed by an evening performance from the Muddy Creek Band at 7 p.m. Saturday’s activities continue until 10 p.m.

Sunday Brings Breakfast, Worship and Gospel Music

The final day opens at 10 a.m. Sunday with the exhibit hall, vendor market and North Douglas Travel Club pancake breakfast.

A worship service begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by Church at the Fair at 11 a.m. Gospel Hour is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

Exhibitors can begin collecting their entries at 1 p.m. The 2026 North Douglas County Fair concludes at 2 p.m.

The fair remains largely powered by volunteers, local organizations and businesses from throughout northern Douglas County. Organizers are continuing to seek community members willing to help, with some volunteer shifts lasting as little as two hours.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Warm, dry summer weather will continue across the Roseburg area this week, although a small chance of thunderstorms could bring lightning and strong wind gusts to eastern Douglas County.

The National Weather Service in Medford expects temperatures to remain seasonable through the first half of the week. Roseburg and other westside communities are likely to stay dry, with the better chances for thunderstorms focused east of the Cascades and across Northern California.

Forecasters said a very isolated storm cannot be ruled out in eastern Douglas County, particularly Tuesday afternoon and evening. Any storm that develops could produce lightning and wind gusts approaching 45 mph.

Tuesday is expected to bring the greatest thunderstorm potential as moisture and atmospheric conditions become more favorable. Lightning over dry vegetation could increase the risk of new wildfire starts, and forecasters said fire weather alerts may be considered.

Thunderstorm chances are expected to decrease Wednesday as moisture and instability begin to weaken.

Conditions become less certain later in the week, but temperatures could climb considerably across western Oregon valleys. Roseburg may approach triple-digit temperatures by Friday, with the heat potentially continuing through the weekend.

No meaningful rainfall is currently expected for the Roseburg area later this week.
