Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California National Weather Service Medford, OR | 341 AM PDT Fri Jul 10 2026

Elevated to critical fire weather concerns increase today and continue through the weekend. Strong gusty southwest to west winds (25-35 mph) are expected Friday through Sunday, with daytime humidities in the mid to low teens. Conditions peak on Saturday as winds increase some, humidities trend lower (low teens/single digits), and these combined conditions are most widespread. A potential thunderstorm pattern is shaping up for early next week, with the best chances favored across far northern California and east of the Cascades.

DFPA Protected Lands

Plans for the proposed Timber~Lands Theme Park in Winston are moving forward with financial support from Douglas County.

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners approved a grant agreement Wednesday providing up to $150,000 to Timberlands Partners LLC. The money will come from the county’s Industrial Development Fund and will be used for planning and other startup work associated with the project.

Timber~Lands Theme Park is proposed as a major new attraction in the Winston area. While the project is still in its early development stages, organizers envision a destination that draws on Douglas County’s timber history and identity.

Grant Will Fund Early Development Work

The county grant is not for park construction. Instead, documents included with the commissioners’ July 8 meeting agenda show that the funding will pay for several steps needed to prepare the project for financing and further development.

The proposed spending includes:

• $58,000 for Kadenwood Group to create the financial structure, or capital stack, needed to fund construction
• $67,000 for the park’s operating model, referred to as “Design Day”
• $23,000 to complete the master plan
• $2,000 to secure the Timber~Lands trademark

Under the agreement, the county may contribute no more than $150,000. Timberlands Partners LLC must use the grant exclusively for the work described in its funding request and provide records or reports requested by the county.

Project representatives Mark Thomas and David Loveall told the county that completing the operating model, master plan, financing structure and trademark work is necessary before the project can advance.

Their letter also states that developers are considering refurbished attractions that could be purchased and redesigned to fit Timber~Lands Theme Park. However, no specific rides or attractions were identified in the county documents.

Partnership Discussions With Cow Creek Tribe

Commissioner Chris Boice said the project team has approached the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians about a potential partnership and that the tribe has invested money in the proposal.

Boice described the project as a potential economic opportunity for Douglas County if it ultimately comes together.

The grant agreement is between Douglas County and Timberlands Partners LLC. The documents do not establish the county as an owner, operator or partner in the theme park.

Developers Project Thousands of Jobs

Thomas and Loveall presented substantial economic projections in their request to the county.

They estimate construction of Timber~Lands Theme Park could support more than 2,000 jobs. Once operating, the park is projected to employ approximately 800 full-time workers, along with another 1,200 part-time employees during the summer and other peak attendance periods.

The developers also project that the park could generate approximately $250 million in economic activity across the greater Douglas County area during its first year of operation.

Those estimates were submitted by the project’s representatives and remain projections. The agenda materials do not include an independent economic analysis confirming the employment or financial figures.

Project Remains in Planning Stage

Approval of the grant does not mean construction of Timber~Lands Theme Park has been authorized or is ready to begin.

The money is intended to help organizers complete the business, design and financial planning needed to determine how the park could be built and operated. Additional financing, property arrangements, regulatory approvals and development work would likely be necessary before construction could move forward.

The project’s representatives included a general timeline with their request but cautioned that it should be viewed as a sequence of steps rather than a schedule containing firm dates.

No construction date or projected opening date for Timber~Lands Theme Park has been announced.

Firefighters have completed a control line around the Little Paradise Fire after the wind-driven blaze burned approximately 3 to 3.5 acres north of Elkton.

The fire was first spotted at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday by the Douglas Forest Protective Association’s camera detection center. The smoke was located roughly 3.7 miles north of Elkton in a previously logged timber unit.

DFPA and Oregon Department of Forestry crews from Western Lane County were dispatched under a mutual-aid response. An air attack aircraft arriving over the scene reported a moderately moving slash fire being pushed by strong winds.

The wind also carried embers ahead of the main fire, creating spot fires and prompting a large response from both the ground and air.

Two helicopters made water drops over the fire while crews built handline, installed hose around the perimeter and established a water supply. Bulldozers were also used to construct control line around the burn area.

The initial response included nine DFPA engines, three ODF engines, two helicopters, two squads, a dozer, a water tender, DFPA’s air attack aircraft and command personnel.

Firefighters remained on scene overnight and had completed control line around the entire perimeter by Thursday morning. Crews are now working through the burned area, extinguishing hot spots and checking for remaining heat.

Smoke may continue to be visible for several days while mop-up work continues.

No homes or other structures were threatened. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

DFPA said this is expected to be the agency’s final update on the fire.

The incident comes as fire conditions continue to dry across the district. The fire danger level will increase to HIGH at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, July 11, on all lands protected by DFPA.

The increase is being attributed to warmer temperatures, lower humidity and increasingly dry vegetation.

The fire danger level will increase to High across the Douglas Forest Protective Association district beginning Saturday as hotter and drier weather moves into the area.

The change takes effect at 12:01 a.m. on July 11 and applies to private, county, state and Bureau of Indian Affairs lands protected by DFPA.

Officials said the increase is prompted by forecasts calling for above-normal temperatures, lower humidity and less moisture recovery during the overnight hours.

Under the High fire danger restrictions, several outdoor activities will only be permitted before 10 a.m. or after 8 p.m. Those activities include:

• Using non-industrial power saws
• Cutting, grinding or welding metal
• Cutting, trimming or mowing dry or cured grass
• Operating power-driven machinery for non-industrial property improvements or development

Industrial Fire Precaution Levels will remain unchanged at IFPL Level 2 throughout the district.

Debris burning remains prohibited during fire season. Campfires are only allowed in designated locations, while fireworks, exploding targets, tracer ammunition and sky lanterns are prohibited.

Smoking is limited to enclosed vehicles on improved roads, boats on the water and other designated areas. Vehicles must remain on improved roads, and anyone traveling through protected lands should carry the required firefighting tools.

Charcoal and pellet barbecues may only be used at maintained residential properties where water or a fire extinguisher is readily available.

DFPA is asking residents and visitors to use extra caution as conditions become increasingly favorable for wildfires. Many fires are caused by human activity and can begin with a single spark from equipment, vehicles or improperly extinguished flames.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A longstanding Douglas County tradition will return to River Forks Park this month as Umpqua Watersheds hosts the 40th Annual Day of River Appreciation.

The free festival is scheduled for Saturday, July 18, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the park west of Roseburg, where the North and South Umpqua rivers meet.

Organizers are planning a full day of music, food, art, educational exhibits and activities for families. Conservation groups, public agencies, recreation organizations and other community partners are also expected to participate.

The celebration focuses on the importance of the Umpqua River system and the role it has played in the region’s culture, economy and recreation.

The confluence at River Forks Park has served as a gathering place for generations. Indigenous people historically relied on the rivers for food, transportation, trade and cultural practices. Today, the park continues to bring residents together for outdoor recreation and community events.

A tradition born from concern for the river

According to Umpqua Watersheds, the annual event traces its beginnings to community concerns about the South Umpqua River during the late 1980s.

Power outages at Roseburg’s wastewater treatment facility reportedly led to untreated sewage entering the river because the facility did not yet have an emergency backup power system. Local residents and conservation advocates pushed for improvements to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

Community members later organized the first River Appreciation Day at River Forks Park, creating an event centered on education, environmental responsibility and appreciation for the area’s waterways.

Oregon formally recognized River Appreciation Day in 1989. The local festival has continued to grow over the decades and now brings together environmental groups, artists, educators, businesses and families from across the region.

Organizations, nonprofit groups and agencies may participate by hosting educational or interactive booths during the event.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Generations of childhood memories are now on display at the Douglas County Museum through a new exhibit filled with antique bicycles, vintage toys and model trains.

The exhibit, titled “Timeless Treasures: Museum Bicycles & Toys,” brings together items dating from the late 1800s through the end of the 20th century. It is expected to remain open for at least a year.

At the center of the exhibit is a collection of 29 bicycles and 104 toys. Many of the pieces came from the family of the late Joe Burris, who spent years collecting and restoring historic bicycles.

Visitors will find everything from early bicycles with rigid frames and rough-riding wheels to children’s tricycles, tandem bikes and classic models from the 1950s and 1960s.

One of the more unusual pieces is a Schwinn Police Special that was once used by the Eugene Police Department. The display also includes a preserved Schwinn Deluxe 7 and a child’s sled believed to date back to the late 1800s.

More Than Just Bicycles

The exhibit reaches well beyond cycling history.

A large selection of toys offers a look at how children played before video games, tablets and modern electronics became common.

Items on display include:

• Pedal-powered riding toys
• Rocking horses
• Wooden and metal sleds
• Scooters
• Dolls and doll carriages
• Vintage board games
• Children’s toys from several different eras

The collection gives visitors a chance to compare how toys changed over time while also showing the materials and craftsmanship used to make them.

Model Trains Span Several Decades

A separate portion of the exhibit is devoted to model railroading.

The train display includes pieces from the museum’s collection as well as trains belonging to Museum Operations Technician Jim Aune. The collection covers several different scales and includes models dating from roughly 1960 to 2000.

Museum Director James Davis helped develop the exhibit, while Museum Research Librarian and Collection Manager Karen Bratton organized the collection. Aune constructed the displays used throughout the exhibit.

County officials said the exhibit is meant to preserve the history found in everyday objects and connect visitors with items that may remind them of their own childhoods or those of their parents and grandparents.

Museum Hours and Admission

The Douglas County Museum is located at 123 Museum Drive in Roseburg, next to the Douglas County Fairgrounds and near Interstate 5 Exit 123.

The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is:

• Free for members and children age 4 and younger
• $2 for children and students ages 5 to 17
• $8 for adults
• $5 for seniors and veterans

The Lavola Bakken Research Library is open Tuesday through Saturday from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
