Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California National Weather Service Medford, OR | 526 AM PDT Tue Aug 4 2026

Hot, dry, windy, and increasingly unstable conditions are expected through Thursday or Friday as the coastal thermal trough strengthens, then pushes inland. East winds and poor recoveries are also expected overnight, mainly over higher terrain and across the east side. Some cooling is possible next weekend, but will remain above normal. There is still little or no signal for thunderstorms over the next 7 days.

DFPA Protected Lands

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Critical fire weather conditions are expected across much of southwest Oregon as hot, dry and increasingly unstable weather combines with low humidity and gusty winds.

The National Weather Service in Medford has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Umpqua Basin and Umpqua National Forest from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5.

The warning includes Roseburg, Elkton, Tiller and Toketee Falls, along with areas near the East Evans Creek and Castle fires. Portions of Siskiyou County in Northern California are also included.

Forecasters expect west to northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, with afternoon gusts reaching 25 mph. Minimum relative humidity could fall between 10% and 15%.

The National Weather Service said increasingly unstable atmospheric conditions could further increase fire activity. Any fires that begin under these conditions could spread quickly and become difficult to control.

Additional Red Flag Warnings are in place for the Rogue Valley, Illinois Valley, Siskiyou Mountains and southern Oregon Cascades. Those warnings remain in effect until 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, and will return from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Affected communities include Medford, Grants Pass, Ashland, Cave Junction, Eagle Point and Shady Cove.

In those areas, afternoon northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph could gust as high as 25 mph before shifting to the east or northeast overnight. Humidity could drop as low as 8%, with poor overnight recovery of around 20% in some locations.

Critical conditions are expected primarily in lower elevations during the afternoon and evening as winds increase and humidity falls. Peaks and ridgelines could experience heightened fire danger overnight because of easterly winds and poor humidity recovery.

A Red Flag Warning does not mean a fire is currently burning in every affected area. It means weather conditions are expected to support rapid fire growth if a fire starts.

Residents should follow all current fire restrictions, avoid activities that could create sparks and have multiple ways to receive emergency information. People living near wildland areas are also encouraged to review evacuation plans and make sure they are registered for local emergency alerts.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A heat advisory remains in effect for the Umpqua Valley as temperatures are expected to climb as high as 100 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in Medford said the advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, through 11 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Afternoon temperatures across central Douglas County are expected to range from 95 to 100 degrees, while overnight lows will remain between 60 and 65 degrees.

The advisory covers the Umpqua Valley, including Roseburg, Green, Drain, Canyonville, Elkton, Sutherlin, Umpqua, Myrtle Creek, Winchester and Glendale. Tiller and Camas Valley are also included in the affected area.

Forecasters said the prolonged heat will create a moderate risk of heat-related illness, particularly for people who do not have access to adequate cooling.

Periods of wildfire smoke could also make conditions more difficult by limiting the ability to open windows and bring cooler air indoors overnight.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned locations when possible, avoid extended time in direct sunlight and check on relatives and neighbors.

Children and pets should never be left unattended inside parked vehicles, even for a short period of time.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Roseburg Public Library will welcome a five-time Guinness World Record holder for a free afternoon of comedy and stunts on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

“The Matt Baker Comedy + Stunt Show” will begin at 1 p.m. at the library, located at 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd.

Baker combines stand-up comedy with a variety of unusual and impressive stunts in a performance designed for children from pre-K through fifth grade and their families.

His skills have earned him five Guinness World Records and appearances on national television programs, including “The Late Late Show with James Corden” and “America’s Got Talent.”

The performance is part of Roseburg Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. Admission is free, and no registration information was announced.

The program is supported by a grant from the Douglas County Cultural Coalition and the Oregon Cultural Trust.

Fire danger and public use restrictions will rise to their highest level this week across lands protected by the Douglas Forest Protective Association.

Beginning at 12:01 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, the Fire Danger Level and Public Use Restriction Level will increase to Extreme throughout the Douglas District.

The change applies to private, county, state and Bureau of Indian Affairs lands protected by Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA). The agency said rising temperatures, lower relative humidity and critically dry vegetation prompted the increase.

Industrial Fire Precaution Levels will remain at IFPL Level 3 in regulated use areas DG-1, DG-2, UA-1 and UA-2, along with forestland located within one-eighth mile of those areas.

Activities Prohibited Under Extreme Restrictions

The following activities are prohibited on protected lands within the Douglas District:

• Using non-industrial power saws
• Cutting, grinding or welding metal
• Cutting, trimming or mowing dried or cured grass
• Operating power-driven machinery for non-industrial improvement or development projects on private property

The State Forester or an authorized representative may approve a written modification or waiver in certain circumstances. The restrictions will remain in effect until they are replaced or ended through another closedown order.

Public Asked to Prevent Human-Caused Fires

DFPA is reminding residents and visitors that a single spark could quickly start a fast-moving wildfire under the expected hot and dry conditions.

Open fires remain prohibited, including campfires, charcoal fires, cooking fires and warming fires, except in designated locations where specifically allowed. Debris burning and the use of burn barrels are also prohibited.

Fireworks, tracer ammunition and exploding targets are not allowed on protected lands.

Drivers should avoid parking or traveling over dry grass because hot exhaust systems and catalytic converters can ignite vegetation. Vehicles and trailers should also be inspected for dragging safety chains, worn brakes, fluid leaks or other problems that could create sparks.

Smoking materials should be fully extinguished and never thrown onto the ground or from a vehicle.

Anyone planning to work or recreate outdoors should check current restrictions and follow all posted closures and regulations. Smoke or suspected fires should be reported immediately by calling 911.

“Every fire prevented helps protect lives, homes, forests, and the firefighters who respond,” DFPA said in its announcement.

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Music on the Half Shell moves into the final stretch of its summer season tonight with Austin guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Jackie Venson.

The free concert begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Nichols Band Shell in Stewart Park. Venson’s performance is the second-to-last show in this year’s concert series.

While Venson’s music is rooted in the blues, her sound rarely stays in one place for long. Her performances weave together rock, soul, R&B, funk and electronic influences, all centered around expressive vocals and electric guitar work.

The Austin native has developed a national following through years of touring, recording and experimenting with different musical styles. She has shared the stage with Gary Clark Jr. and Melissa Etheridge and performed with Alanis Morissette and Lainey Wilson during the 2023 CMT Music Awards. In 2024, she was selected to perform in Rolling Stone’s Future of Music showcase.

Venson’s breakthrough album, “Joy,” was released in 2019. When the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted touring the following year, she turned to livestreaming and found an even larger audience online. Those performances helped place her ninth on Pollstar’s list of the year’s top livestreaming artists and led to an appearance during Season 46 of “Austin City Limits.”

Her recordings show the range audiences can expect from her live performance. “Love Transcends” draws heavily from Texas blues, while “Ghost in the Machine” blends rock with electro-funk. Her 2025 release, “The Love Anthology,” moves further into soul and R&B.

Venson’s Roseburg performance follows last week’s appearance by 19-year-old guitarist and songwriter Bella Rayne.

Music on the Half Shell will conclude its 2026 season Tuesday, Aug. 11, with MarchFourth Marching Band. The Portland-based ensemble combines brass, percussion and funk with a theatrical performance featuring acrobats and stilt walkers. That free concert will also begin at 7 p.m. at Stewart Park.
