There is a very low chance of showers and thunderstorms in eastern Modoc and southeastern Lake County today. Gusty winds are expected today east of the Cascades, but humidities are expected above critical levels. Humidities will trend slightly higher on Saturday with breezy afternoon winds. Sunday will be a relative lull in the fire weather activity. Elevated fire weather conditions may develop east of the Cascades on Monday with breezy and dry conditions. Then, there is a chance of precipitation west of the Cascades between Tuesday and Friday next week as a low pressure system moves into the region.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - The Southern Oregon Wine Institute at Umpqua Community College will celebrate four recent wine competition medals with a special tasting event Saturday, Sept. 5.

The event, called Four Medals. Two Wines. One Celebration., will run from noon to 5 p.m. at SOWI on the UCC campus.

Two of the institute's 2023 wines recently received recognition in regional and collegiate wine competitions.

SOWI's 2023 Pinot Noir earned Double Gold at the Pacific Northwest Wine Competition and Bronze at the West Coast College & University Wine Festival. Its 2023 Tempranillo earned Gold at the West Coast College & University Wine Festival and Silver at the Pacific Northwest competition.

During the Sept. 5 celebration, guests will be able to taste both award-winning wines alongside the newly released 2024 vintages.

The event will also include small food pairings and additional SOWI wines available at the Discovery Bar. Winemaker Joel Goodwillie will offer optional behind-the-scenes winery tours during the afternoon.

Admission includes the featured wine tastings, food pairings, access to the Discovery Bar, an optional winery tour and a $10 credit toward wine purchased during the event.

The celebration will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at the Southern Oregon Wine Institute at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg.

Advance tickets are encouraged, and space for the winery tours is limited.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court participant is bringing local first responders, families and children together for a free community event next month at Stewart Park.

The First Responder Appreciation Event will be held Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the large pavilion at Stewart Park in Roseburg.

The event is being organized by H.O.P.E. Drug Court participant Charles Lockridge as his graduation community project. Families will have an opportunity to meet local first responders in a relaxed setting, see emergency and response vehicles, learn about community programs and services, and take part in activities for children.

For Lockridge, the project comes from a personal experience.

“As a child, I experienced a lot of trauma seeing my mother taken away in an ambulance,” Lockridge said. “This event is to give kids an opportunity to meet the people who provide help and assistance, learn what they do, and hopefully not be afraid when help is called.”

Organizers said the goal is to give children a chance to become familiar with first responders before they encounter them during an emergency.

Representatives from several areas of emergency response and community services are expected to participate, including law enforcement, fire and rescue, ambulance and emergency medical services, K9 teams, mobile crisis response, behavioral health services and other local programs.

The event also gives families a chance to learn more about the agencies and organizations that work together when someone in the community needs help.

Community projects are part of the graduation phase of the Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court Program. Participants use the projects as an opportunity to give back to the community while completing the program, which focuses on treatment, accountability, structure and support.

Oregon Pacific Bank and the Umpqua Valley Public Defenders Office are sponsoring the First Responder Appreciation Event.

The event is free and open to the public.

The Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court Program will also hold its 114th graduation ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 5:15 p.m. at Cascade Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The public is invited to attend and recognize participants who have completed the program.

GLIDE, Ore. - The Glide Fire Department is working to build a community-based emergency communications network designed to keep neighborhoods connected when cell phones, internet service and other traditional communication systems are unavailable.

Over the next several months, the department plans to hold a series of public meetings as part of the Glide Community Emergency Communication Plan, or GCECP.

The goal is to have an emergency communications network in place by February 2027 that can be used during major disasters, including earthquakes, wildfires, severe winter storms and other events that could damage roads, electrical infrastructure and communication systems.

The plan was developed in response to concerns about widespread communication failures during emergencies. Glide-area residents experienced extended power and communication outages during the 2019 winter storm commonly referred to as "Snowmageddon" and during the 2020 Archie Creek Fire.

Officials also point to Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake scenarios, which predict widespread damage to roads, utilities and communication infrastructure across western Oregon.

Under the plan, residents and neighborhood volunteers would use Family Radio Service, or FRS, and General Mobile Radio Service, or GMRS, radios to relay information from individual neighborhoods to the Glide Fire Department.

Neighborhood volunteers equipped with handheld radios could go door-to-door following a disaster, gather information about injuries, damage or other needs and report that information to a neighborhood assembly point.

Information from those locations would then be passed to neighborhood Net Control operators using GMRS radios.

The Net Control stations would communicate directly with a radio operator at the Glide Fire Department, referred to during exercises and emergencies as "Glide Base."

Glide Base would then relay information to Douglas County emergency officials, including 911 or the county's Emergency Operations Center, depending on the situation.

The system is intended to provide a backup when normal communication methods are unavailable, particularly in neighborhoods that could become isolated because of damaged bridges, blocked roads or other access problems.

The Glide Community Emergency Communication Plan divides the greater Glide area into six geographic sections: Glide Central, Glide North, Glide East, Glide South, Glide West and 138 East Canyon.

Those sections include 22 identified neighborhoods.

Officials currently anticipate consolidating those neighborhoods into approximately six neighborhood Net Control stations. Each station would use base radio equipment capable of communicating with Glide Base.

Neighborhoods will also identify Neighborhood Assembly Points, or NAPs, where residents could report during an emergency and where radio communication with the neighborhood's Net Control station would be available.

The locations could include homes, businesses or other suitable sites selected by individual communities.

Areas farther east along Highway 138 may require additional radio systems because of terrain and distance from the Glide Fire Department. The plan notes that amateur radio equipment could potentially be used in those areas to relay information.

Amateur radio, commonly called ham radio, is not formally part of the GCECP's FRS and GMRS network. However, the Glide Fire Department is separately working with licensed amateur radio operators.

The department plans to have licensed operators available to communicate with Douglas County Amateur Radio Emergency Service, or ARES, and other agencies using HF, VHF and UHF radio systems.

Glide Fire officials say the community communication system will be practiced several times each year through drills so residents and volunteers are familiar with the equipment and procedures before an actual emergency occurs.

Public meetings will be held at the Glide Fire Station for residents interested in participating in the program.

Specific meeting dates, times and agenda information will be announced through the Glide Fire Department's website, the Glide Rural Fire Protection District Facebook page and notices posted throughout the district.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Families looking for another chance to cool off before summer winds down can still visit the splash pad at Fir Grove Park in Roseburg.

The Fir Grove Park Splash Pad will remain open daily from 10 a.m. until dusk through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.

The free interactive spray park gives children and families a place to cool down during the warmer late-summer days while spending time outdoors.

Visitors may want to come prepared for the sun. Shade around the splash pad is limited, and Roseburg Parks and Recreation recommends bringing drinking water, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses.

The splash pad is located at Fir Grove Park, behind the Umpqua Valley Arts Center at 1624 W. Harvard Ave., just off Harvard Avenue.

Roseburg Parks and Recreation maintains the splash pad throughout the summer season, and there is no charge to use the facility.

COOS BAY, Ore. - Stargazers will have three nights to explore the skies along the southern Oregon coast when the Sunset Bay Astronomy Festival returns Sept. 10-12.

The annual event will take place throughout Sunset Bay and Shore Acres state parks near Coos Bay, with activities ranging from solar viewing and guided hikes to night-sky photography workshops, evening programs and telescope star parties.

The festival has grown in popularity over the years, according to Oregon Parks and Recreation Department officials, with much of the activity centered around Sunset Bay and Shore Acres.

“The astronomy festival takes place around the Sunset Bay management unit, with most activities centered at Sunset Bay and Shore Acres, and the event has grown in popularity over the years,” Park Manager Lee Ricci said. “It’s a fun way to experience the park at night and enjoy stargazing along the coast.”

Ricci said this year’s festival will include a team of volunteers and a number of telescopes for visitors to use during the evening star parties.

Activities begin Thursday, Sept. 10, with solar viewing at 2 p.m. at the Sunset Bay Campground Interpretive Center. A Night Sky Photography Workshop will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m., followed by the “How We Find Our Way in the Dark” program at 7:30 p.m. at Shore Acres Garden. The first star party begins at 8 p.m.

Registration is required for the photography workshop. Those interested can email Lee.Ricci@oprd.oregon.gov to sign up.

Friday’s schedule begins with solar viewing at 2 p.m. at the Sunset Bay Interpretive Center. A guided hike titled “Earth: An Ocean Planet” begins at 4 p.m. at the Shore Acres Observation Building.

Another Night Sky Photography Workshop will be offered from 5 to 6:30 p.m., with registration required by emailing Lee.Ricci@oprd.oregon.gov. An “Imagining Other Worlds” evening program begins at 7:30 p.m. at Shore Acres Garden, followed by a star party at 8 p.m.

Saturday’s activities include solar viewing with a special telescope at 2 p.m. at the Shore Acres Observation Building. At 4 p.m., visitors can attend “How to Talk to Aliens - Even if You’re Shy,” also at the observation building.

The festival wraps up Saturday evening with “Exploring the Universe” at 7:30 p.m. at Shore Acres Garden and the final telescope star party beginning at 8 p.m.

A $10 parking permit per vehicle is required for parking lots throughout the Sunset Bay Management Unit, including the Sunset Bay and Shore Acres day-use areas.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Con-Vey President Jeremy Goebel has been named to Woodworking Network’s Wood Industry 40 Under 40 Class of 2026, recognizing his leadership and contributions to the wood products manufacturing industry.

Goebel was formally recognized Tuesday, Aug. 25, during Woodworking Network’s Leadership Reception at the International Woodworking Fair in Atlanta.

The annual 40 Under 40 program recognizes professionals who are helping shape the future of the North American woodworking industry through areas including leadership, innovation, product development, productivity and organizational growth. The 2026 class marks the 11th year of the program, with nearly 100 nominations submitted from across the industry.

Goebel joined Roseburg-based Con-Vey in 2013 as a sales representative and worked his way through several leadership positions, including sales manager and vice president, before becoming company president.

Woodworking Network highlighted Goebel's work solving manufacturing challenges and his involvement in the development of Con-Vey's Edge-Damming System, an automated system designed for plywood panel repair.

Goebel spearheaded the patent process for the technology, helping move the system from an idea into a commercially used product. The system has since received industry recognition, including another major honor this week in Atlanta.

Con-Vey's Edge-Damming System was named one of seven winners of the 2026 IWF Challengers Distinguished Achievement Award. The system was selected from 20 finalists, which were narrowed down from 84 submissions representing 65 companies.

The Edge-Damming System is designed to allow cut-to-size plywood panels to be repaired while continuing through a production line. The technology uses a coated steel belt to seal routed panel edges and induction heating to cure repairs in-line, with the goal of reducing waste and labor while maintaining production speeds.

The two recognitions make for a notable week for the Roseburg company, with both its president and one of its recently developed technologies receiving national industry honors at IWF.

Con-Vey is an industrial automation and equipment manufacturer headquartered in Roseburg. The company traces its history to 1946 and today develops material handling, robotics and other automated manufacturing systems for customers in the wood products and other industries.
