Fire Weather Forecast for southern Oregon and northern California National Weather Service Medford, OR | 542 AM PDT Mon Aug 24 2026

Isolated thunderstorms possible along Cascades north of Crater Lake and across northern FWZ 624/625 Friday afternoon and evening.

.Warm and seasonable conditions are expected today, with typical diurnal winds. Above normal temperatures return Monday and Tuesday, then seasonable conditions return midweek into next weekend, with periods of enhanced afternoon winds possible. Monday's above normal temperatures will lead to a very dry afternoon, and when combined with the strong gusty winds, we will have critical fire weather conditions develop through the daytime hours. As a result, a Red Flag Warning has been issued for Monday. Additionally, there is a slight chance of thunderstorms Monday afternoon across far eastern Lake and Modoc counties, mainly along the Warner and Hart Mountains.

DFPA Protected Lands

US Forest Service - Umpqua National Forest

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A piece of Douglas County railroad history will return to public view next month as the Douglas County Museum celebrates the completion of a major restoration project involving an 1883 Oregon & California Railroad rail car.

Douglas County Commissioners Tom Kress, Chris Boice and Tim Freeman, along with museum staff, volunteers and members of the Douglas County Museum Foundation, will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 26, at the Douglas County Museum, 123 Museum Drive in Roseburg.

Following the ceremony, the museum will hold a free open house from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., allowing visitors to step aboard the restored rail car and learn about its history. Admission to the museum will be free throughout the day.

County officials describe the restoration as a 16-year effort involving volunteers, local businesses, the Museum Foundation and private donors.

“This 1883 O&C railcar is more than an historic artifact - it is a piece of Douglas County’s story,” Commissioner Tom Kress said. “It carried passengers through our communities, including stops at the Dillard Depot, and represents an important time when the railroad and timber industry were helping connect Southern Oregon to the rest of the state and beyond.”

Kress, who serves as the county’s museum liaison, encouraged residents to visit the museum and see the restored car firsthand.

A Rail Car With Deep Oregon Roots

Built in 1883, the rail car operated along the Oregon & California Railroad route between San Francisco and Portland, carrying passengers through communities across the region.

Its service included stops in Douglas County, including at the Dillard Depot.

In 1914, the car was converted into what was known as a combine car. About half of the car continued to accommodate passengers, while the other half was used for mail service.

Passenger and mail operations ended in 1925, but the railroad continued using the car for another 12 years as a maintenance away car.

By the 1940s, the rail car had been donated to the City of Glendale, where it remained for decades.

Restoration Brings the Car Back to Life

The City of Glendale, through its Community Action Group, donated the historic car to the Douglas County Museum in 2012. It was moved to the museum grounds on June 21, 2013.

The restoration was led by Dale Greenley, Dave Van Slyke, James Aune and Gary Peske, with support from other volunteers and community partners.

Local businesses recognized by the county for helping with the project include:

• Lone Rock Timber
• Addcox Heating Center
• Star Fire Lumber

The restoration represented an investment of approximately $100,000, funded through the Douglas County Museum Foundation and private donors.

“This project is a wonderful example of what can happen when a community comes together to preserve its history,” Douglas County Museum Director James Davis said.

Davis credited the restoration team, local businesses, the foundation, county commissioners and donors with helping preserve the rail car for future generations.

Greenley, a local historian, museum volunteer and Museum Foundation member, described the project as a labor of love.

“I had no idea what I was getting into when I agreed to work on this project 16 years ago,” Greenley said. “As a woodworker, the railcar restoration presented a unique challenge and a wonderful opportunity to help restore a piece of our local history.”

Ribbon-Cutting and Free Open House

The September 26 event will officially open the restored rail car exhibit to the public.

Visitors will be able to board the rail car, see the completed restoration and learn more about the role railroads played in the development of Douglas County and Southern Oregon.

WINSTON, Ore. - Firefighters contained a grass fire near Upper Olalla Road southwest of Winston Saturday after an aggressive response involving multiple local fire agencies and aerial resources.

Crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, Lookingglass Rural Fire District, Camas Valley Volunteer Fire District and Tenmile Rural Fire District were dispatched at approximately 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, to the 3300 block of Upper Olalla Road.

The fire was initially reported at about one-quarter acre but grew as it moved moderately uphill. Its final mapped size was approximately 23 acres.

DFPA aviation resources joined firefighters on the ground during the initial attack. By 3:40 p.m., crews had knocked down the forward spread of the fire and began working to establish a trail around the perimeter.

No evacuations were ordered, and no homes or other structures were threatened.

By 5 p.m., approximately 35 to 45 percent of the perimeter had been trailed, and DFPA released its aerial resources, including Air Attack and a Type 2 helicopter.

Firefighters continued working around the fire until the perimeter was completed before transitioning into mop-up operations, where crews worked to extinguish remaining heat and hot spots.

DFPA said the progress made by responding agencies allowed Saturday evening's update to serve as its final informational update on the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Roseburg is in for another hot August day Monday before temperatures begin easing back toward more typical late-summer levels later in the week.

The National Weather Service in Medford expects Monday to be the warmest day of the upcoming forecast period, with temperatures across areas west of the Cascades running about 5 to 10 degrees above normal.

In Roseburg, the current forecast calls for a high near 96 degrees Monday under mostly sunny skies. Winds should remain light early in the day before becoming west-northwest at around 6 to 11 mph during the afternoon.

Monday night will bring increasing clouds and a low around 58 degrees, with winds becoming calm during the evening.

The heat will not last long. An approaching Pacific weather system is expected to begin bringing temperatures down Tuesday, although much of the region will remain somewhat warmer than normal. By Friday or Saturday, temperatures are expected to settle closer to seasonal averages.

Gusty Winds Raise Fire Weather Concerns

Monday will also bring increased fire weather concerns to parts of Southern Oregon and Northern California.

A passing weather disturbance is expected to produce stronger afternoon winds in several areas, including the Rogue Valley, Shasta Valley and portions of the Cascades. Combined with very low relative humidity, the National Weather Service said conditions could allow new fires to spread rapidly.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday for portions of Southern Oregon and Northern California, including parts of the southern Oregon Cascades and areas in and around Jackson and Siskiyou counties.

While Roseburg is not the primary focus of the warning described in Sunday's forecast discussion, residents across Douglas County should continue to use caution with anything that could create a spark as vegetation remains dry late in the summer season.

Small Thunderstorm Chance Farther East

There is also a slight chance of thunderstorms Monday afternoon and early evening, but those chances are concentrated well east of Roseburg in southeastern Lake County and Modoc County.

Forecasters place the probability at around 15 to 20 percent. Any storms that develop could produce lightning and locally strong or erratic wind gusts.

For Roseburg and much of Douglas County, dry weather is expected to continue.

Gradual Cooldown Through The Week

A weak front could bring additional cloud cover to parts of the region Tuesday morning, but significant rainfall is not expected.

Several weather systems are then expected to remain over or near the Pacific Northwest through the remainder of the week, gradually pushing temperatures downward.

By Friday and Saturday, the National Weather Service expects generally seasonable temperatures across Southern Oregon. Some afternoon breezes could increase again Friday, but forecasters said details remain uncertain several days out.

Overall, the final week of August currently looks relatively quiet for Roseburg, with Monday's heat standing out as the warmest part of the upcoming forecast.

OAKLAND, Ore. - Classical music will trade the traditional concert hall for the open landscape of northern Douglas County this week when pianist Hunter Noack brings IN A LANDSCAPE: Classical Music in the Wild to Mildred Kanipe Memorial Park.

The outdoor concert is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 27, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the county park northwest of Oakland. Tickets are listed at $45.

IN A LANDSCAPE takes a 9-foot Steinway concert grand piano into parks, forests, ranches and other outdoor settings across the West. Rather than gathering around a conventional stage, concertgoers listen through wireless headphones and are encouraged to move through the surrounding landscape while Noack performs. Headsets are included with admission.

The Mildred Kanipe performance will be held alongside the creek, approximately a quarter to a half-mile walk north of the equestrian parking area and campground. Organizers say a limited number of ADA parking spaces will be available near the Baimbridge-Kanipe historic farmstead day-use area. Attendees should bring their own camping chair or blanket, as seating is not provided.

The setting itself is a significant part of the event.

Mildred Kanipe Memorial Park covers nearly 1,100 acres and includes more than 14 miles of trails through Douglas fir forests, oak woodlands and open oak savanna. The property includes the historic homestead and continues to reflect its long ranching and equestrian history.

Mildred Kanipe inherited and expanded her family's ranch before leaving the property to Douglas County following her death in 1983, with the stipulation that the land be preserved as a public park. Historic features remain throughout the property, including the Baimbridge-Kanipe Farmstead.

Thursday's concert will also have a local connection beyond its setting. The performance benefits the Umpqua Symphony Association and is being presented in memory of Lauren Young.

Founded by Noack in 2016, IN A LANDSCAPE is now in its 11th season. The nonprofit concert series has presented hundreds of performances throughout the West with a mission of connecting audiences with classical music and the outdoors.

The first school bells of the 2026-27 academic year are ringing Monday for students in several Douglas County communities, while much of the rest of the county has another week before classes begin.

Five Douglas County school districts have student instruction beginning Monday, Aug. 24: Days Creek, Elkton, Glendale, Winston-Dillard and Yoncalla. Some are using staggered schedules or soft starts for certain grade levels.

Five Districts Start Aug. 24

Days Creek School District's calendar lists Aug. 24 as the first day of school, including for Pre-K students.

Elkton Charter School also begins instructional days Aug. 24, following professional development and in-service work the previous week.

Glendale School District begins student school days Aug. 24, according to its 2026-27 calendar.

Winston-Dillard School District also lists Aug. 24 as its first day, but students are returning on a soft-start schedule. Elementary students attend half-days Aug. 24 through Aug. 26. Winston Middle School welcomes sixth-grade students only on Monday, while Douglas High School welcomes ninth-grade students only.

Yoncalla School District begins classes Aug. 24 as well. Kindergarten students have a soft start Aug. 24 through Aug. 27, followed by their first full day Aug. 31. Preschool students also begin Aug. 31.

Larger Wave of Students Returns Aug. 31

For many other Douglas County families, the first day of school is still one week away.

Camas Valley Community Charter School, Glide School District, North Douglas School District, Oakland School District, Riddle School District, South Umpqua School District and Sutherlin School District all have regular student instruction beginning Monday, Aug. 31.

Reedsport School District also lists Aug. 31 as its first day of school.

Roseburg Public Schools will use a staggered opening beginning Aug. 31. Students in grades 1 through 5, sixth grade and ninth grade have their first day Monday, Aug. 31. Students in grades 7 and 8 and grades 10 through 12 begin Tuesday, Sept. 1. Kindergarten students will follow a soft-start schedule, with families directed to their individual schools for details.

School Buses and School Zones Return

The return to school also means drivers will begin seeing more school buses, students at bus stops and pedestrian traffic near schools.

Under Oregon law, flashing amber lights on a school bus warn drivers that the bus is preparing to stop. Drivers must stop when a school bus displays flashing red lights and remain stopped until the red lights are turned off.

On a divided highway where opposing roadways are separated by an unpaved median or barrier, motorists traveling on the opposite roadway do not have to stop. A painted median or center turn lane does not create separate roadways, meaning traffic traveling in both directions must stop for a school bus displaying flashing red lights.

Drivers should also pay close attention to school-zone signs. Oregon school speed zones have a reduced speed limit of 20 mph when the conditions posted on the sign apply, such as when lights are flashing, during designated school-day hours or when children are present.

With school calendars varying across Douglas County, the return to the classroom will happen in waves this year. For families in Days Creek, Elkton, Glendale, Winston-Dillard and Yoncalla, the new school year begins Monday. For most of the rest of the county, the back-to-school rush arrives Aug. 31.
