Mostly dry conditions are expected through mid week with typical afternoon breezes/humidity and temperatures near to slightly above normal. Expect nightly coastal marine stratus, but with poor to moderate RH recovery over the ridges. There's a low chance of thunderstorms (5-10% chance) this afternoon/evening near/north of Crater Lake in Cascades. Thunder chances drop to 0-5% Tue-Thu, then an offshore trough could bring lightning risk Friday/Saturday (although that possibility is trending down). Early projections suggest most activity to the north.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Roseburg firefighters and several neighboring agencies were called into action Saturday afternoon as three separate emergencies were reported within a span of just 14 minutes.

Between 3:51 p.m. and 4:05 p.m., crews responded to a vegetation fire, a reported structure fire and an airplane crash at the Roseburg Regional Airport.

Half-Acre Vegetation Fire

The first call came in at 3:51 p.m. for a natural cover fire near Hewitt Avenue and NE Stephens Street.

Firefighters arrived and quickly extinguished the fire, which grew to approximately half an acre.

The Douglas Forest Protective Association also responded and determined the fire was within its jurisdiction. Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and the Roseburg Police Department assisted at the scene.

Smoke Reported at Four-Plex

Just six minutes later, at 3:57 p.m., Roseburg firefighters were dispatched to a reported structure fire at a residential four-plex at 902 W. Stanton Street.

Crews arrived to find light smoke coming from the building's HVAC system. Firefighters shut off power to the system while investigating the source of the smoke.

Power to the HVAC system remained off and the property owner was notified.

Sutherlin Fire Department, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue, Avista Utilities and Pacific Power assisted with the response.

Airplane Crash at Roseburg Regional Airport

At 4:05 p.m., while crews were already handling the other incidents, firefighters were dispatched to a reported airplane crash at the Roseburg Regional Airport.

Firefighters arrived to find a single-engine passenger airplane in a field.

According to the Roseburg Fire Department:

• The pilot was not injured.
• No fire was reported.
• No fluids were released as a result of the crash.
• Air traffic was temporarily redirected.
• The Federal Aviation Administration was notified.

Multiple Agencies Assist

The Roseburg Fire Department said the three incidents occurring almost simultaneously demonstrated the importance of cooperation and interoperability between emergency agencies throughout Roseburg and Douglas County.

The department thanked both the agencies that responded and those that were dispatched and prepared to assist.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - An evening of dinner, local wine and beer, auctions and a little Wizard of Oz magic will help give Douglas County animals something much more important: a place to call home.

Saving Grace Humane Society will host its biggest fundraiser of the year, Paws for a Cause, on Aug. 28 at Melrose Vineyards. This year’s theme, “Wizard of Paws: There’s No Place Like Home,” invites guests to follow the yellow brick road for an evening benefiting the animals and community programs supported by Saving Grace.

The evening will feature appetizers and dinner, local wine and beer, live and silent auctions, and stories highlighting the animals and people whose lives have been touched by Saving Grace.

Tickets are $100 per person, with tables of eight available for $800. Admission includes appetizers, dinner and wine or beer tickets.

For anyone who has adopted a pet, reunited with a missing animal, needed help getting a pet spayed or neutered, or simply believes animals deserve care when they have nowhere else to go, Paws for a Cause is an opportunity to directly support that work here in Douglas County.

“There truly is no place like home, and every animal deserves the chance to find one,” said Melissa Owens, Development Director for Saving Grace Humane Society. “Paws for a Cause is a celebration of what this community makes possible and our commitment to serving the pets and people of Douglas County. Every ticket, donation, auction bid, and sponsorship helps provide shelter, veterinary care, and a pathway home for animals in need. We hope you’ll join us for a truly special evening.”

That support reaches well beyond providing animals with a temporary place to stay.

Saving Grace provides comprehensive veterinary care for animals at the shelter while also operating community programs aimed at helping pets remain with the people who love them. Those services include a pet food bank and low-cost spay and neuter services, in addition to the shelter’s work finding homes for animals in its care. Organizers say Paws for a Cause is an important part of sustaining those programs and services.

Saving Grace is Douglas County’s only full-service animal shelter. The nonprofit provides shelter, food and medical care to thousands of animals each year, but its work does not stop with the basics.

Animals waiting to return to their families or find new homes receive attention from staff and volunteers, along with the everyday comforts that can make an unfamiliar shelter environment a little easier - warm blankets, toys, treats and time spent socializing with people who care for them. Saving Grace also continues working to expand programs designed to keep pets and their families together whenever possible.

That makes Paws for a Cause more than a night out at a vineyard.

It is a chance to enjoy dinner with friends, bid on something fun, hear some powerful stories and know that the money spent that evening stays connected to work happening every day for animals across Douglas County.

And the Wizard of Oz theme carries a fitting message for an organization whose work so often ends with an animal walking through a front door and finally being home.

For people who have been looking for an excuse to enjoy an evening at Melrose Vineyards, support a local nonprofit or simply do something good for animals in the community, this may be the night to do it.

WINSTON, Ore. - After nearly three decades in law enforcement, Winston Police Department Lt. R. Stiffler is preparing to retire, and the community is invited to help celebrate his years of service.

A retirement celebration honoring Stiffler will be held Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 1 p.m. at the Winston Community Center, 440 SE Grape Avenue in Winston.

Stiffler has spent nearly 30 years serving in law enforcement, building a career marked by leadership and a long-standing commitment to the community.

The gathering will give colleagues, friends, community members and others who have worked with Stiffler over the years an opportunity to recognize his career and wish him well in retirement.

Organizers said the celebration is also a chance to thank Stiffler for the impact he has made both within the Winston Police Department and throughout the community during his years of service.

The retirement celebration is open to those who would like to attend and help recognize Stiffler as he closes out nearly 30 years in law enforcement.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - Umpqua National Forest officials are reducing the area closed because of the Castle Fire beginning Monday, Aug. 17, allowing South Umpqua Falls Campground and Day Use Area to reopen to visitors.

The new Castle Fire Closure Order #06-15-02-26-03 will cover a smaller area surrounding portions of Little Black Rock and Castle Creek.

Under the revised closure, restrictions begin along National Forest Service Road 28 from its junction with NFSR 2823 to French Junction, as well as along NFSR 2823. All trails, roads and recreation areas within the designated closure boundary will remain off limits.

Forest officials said the closure will remain in effect until conditions allow the area to safely reopen.

South Umpqua Falls Reopens

The reduced closure means South Umpqua Falls Campground and Day Use Area will reopen for recreation Monday, Aug. 17.

The popular recreation area had been affected by restrictions associated with the Castle Fire response.

Some recreation areas closer to the fire will remain closed, including:

• Castle Creek Trailhead
• Castle Creek Trail
• Roads, trails and recreation areas within the revised closure boundary

Visitors traveling into the area are encouraged to review the latest closure map before their trip and remain outside areas still restricted due to fire activity and firefighter operations.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - Scottish heritage, bagpipes, traditional athletics, dancing and plenty of food will take over Melrose Vineyards this weekend as the 2026 DCCS Highland Games and Clan Gathering returns for two days of competition and celebration.

The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Event Center and lower field of Melrose Vineyards, 885 Melqua Road in the Melrose area west of Roseburg.

One of the biggest attractions of the weekend will be the Oregon State Heavy Athletics Championship, bringing traditional Highland Games competitions to the field throughout both days.

Athletic events will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until competitors are finished. Because competitors progress through the events at different speeds, organizers said there is not a set schedule for each individual competition.

Two events are generally expected to take place at the same time throughout the day, including competitions such as the weight over bar and stone toss. The caber toss, one of the most recognizable Highland Games events, will be the final event for each class.

The sheaf toss will take place near the clan village throughout both days, giving visitors exploring the clan tents and vendor area another close-up look at the traditional competitions.

A designated spectator area will also be available alongside the athletics field, allowing attendees to watch the competitions from nearby as events take place.

Music, Dancing and Clan Gathering

The weekend is about more than athletics.

Musical entertainment will include performances by The Argyle Shamrocks and the Eugene Highlanders bagpipe band, bringing traditional sounds to the grounds throughout the gathering.

New this year, dancers from the Blackthorn Academy will perform both Saturday and Sunday.

Visitors will also be able to explore the clan tents and learn more about Scottish heritage, family histories and traditions while visiting the clan village.

Food and vendor booths will be set up throughout the event, giving attendees a chance to eat, shop and spend the day at the vineyard between performances and competitions.

Tickets will be sold at the admission gate only.

• Children ages 5-12: $10
• Children under 5: Free
• Family pass: $40, covering two adults and three or more children ages 5-12

Organizers are also reminding visitors that outside alcohol is not permitted on the Highland Games grounds.

The 2026 DCCS Highland Games and Clan Gathering runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 22-23, at Melrose Vineyards, 885 Melqua Road, Roseburg.

ROSEBURG, Ore. - A warm and mostly sunny weekend is ahead for Roseburg, with afternoon temperatures gradually climbing into the upper 80s by Sunday.

The National Weather Service expects partly sunny skies Friday with a high near 84 degrees. Winds will remain light for much of the day before becoming north-northwest around 6 mph during the afternoon.

Friday night will be partly cloudy with a low around 54.

Saturday is expected to be mostly sunny and slightly warmer, reaching about 86 degrees. Calm winds during the morning will again become north-northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Saturday night will be partly cloudy with a low near 54.

Temperatures climb another couple of degrees Sunday, when Roseburg is forecast to reach about 88 under mostly sunny skies. Sunday night will be mostly cloudy with a low around 56.

Across the broader region, forecasters in Medford say southwest flow will keep seasonable warmth and generally dry conditions in place through much of the coming week.

There will still be a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms Friday and Saturday, primarily across western Siskiyou County, along the Cascades and in northern portions of Klamath and Lake counties. Any storms that develop could produce brief rain, gusty and erratic winds and lightning.

Thunderstorm chances decrease Sunday and Monday before drier conditions are expected to take over for most of next week.

For Roseburg and much of the Umpqua Valley, the weekend should remain relatively quiet, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures warming a few degrees each day.
