MORNING NEWS
Fresh headlines, updates, and community info to start the day.
Southern Oregon Goodwill Plans Roseburg Move To Former Rite Aid Site

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Southern Oregon Goodwill says its Roseburg store is moving later this year, with the organization emphasizing that the location is not closing but relocating to a larger space. Goodwill said the new location will be “bigger” and “closer than you might think.”

Southern Oregon Goodwill’s current Roseburg store is located at 2455 NW Stewart Parkway. The planned new site is the former Rite Aid building at 1430 NW Garden Valley Blvd. Goodwill has publicly confirmed the move itself, while the Garden Valley Boulevard address is the former Roseburg Rite Aid location.
The current Roseburg Goodwill location opened in 2016 in the former Office Depot building on Stewart Parkway. Southern Oregon Goodwill previously said that site included more than 10,000 square feet of retail space along with an employment and training center.
No opening date for the new Roseburg location had been publicly posted in the sources reviewed Tuesday.
Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby Helps Fund Backup Generator For Rock Creek Hatchery

ROSEBURG, Ore. — The Umpqua Fishery Enhancement Derby has partnered with Powerhouse Electric to provide a permanent backup generator for Rock Creek Hatchery, according to a recent announcement from the organization.
The project is intended to help protect juvenile spring Chinook during critical rearing months, when reliable power is essential to keeping hatchery water systems operating.
According to the announcement, frequent power outages have affected water systems at the hatchery. The new generator is expected to replace costly annual generator rentals while providing a more dependable long-term solution.
The derby said Powerhouse Electric also contributed in-kind support through its time and expertise, assisting with research, installation, and training related to the project.

Organizers said the enhancement is expected to improve fish survival rates by helping the hatchery release stronger, healthier smolts that can return as harvestable adult Chinook in both ocean and freshwater fisheries.
The organization also said cost savings from the investment will allow the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to direct funding toward other needs, including ongoing hatchery operations and recovery work tied to the 2020 wildfire.
Organizers said the overall investment supports healthier fish, stronger returns, and continued enhancement of fisheries across the Umpqua Basin.
For more information about derby projects, the organization said people can contact Tina at 541-672-0757 or tina@dougtimber.org.
Heavy Rain, Cascade Snow Expected Across Southern Oregon Wednesday

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Rain, mountain snow and gusty winds are expected to impact parts of Southern Oregon on Wednesday as a cold front moves through the region, according to the National Weather Service in Medford.
Forecasters said the most active period is expected through Wednesday morning and afternoon, with coastal areas seeing periods of moderate to heavy rainfall and moderate rain also possible in the Umpqua Valley. Snow is expected to continue in the Cascades, where higher elevations could see significant accumulation and periods of heavy snowfall.
TripCheck cameras early Wednesday showed snow around Diamond Lake and along parts of Highway 97.
The National Weather Service said snowfall rates in the Cascades could reach up to 1 inch per hour over peaks and ridgelines, with hazardous travel conditions possible through Thursday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Cascades from Crater Lake northward above 4,000 feet until 5 a.m. Thursday.
East of the Cascades, gusty winds are expected to develop Wednesday, prompting a Wind Advisory from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for parts of Lake County and nearby areas in Northern California.
Forecasters said precipitation and winds should ease Wednesday night, but colder air moving in behind the front will bring dropping snow levels and chilly overnight temperatures. Snow levels are expected to fall to around 2,500 feet late Wednesday night and could dip to 1,500 feet by Thursday morning, though widespread winter impacts are not expected at lower elevations.
Farther south, a Frost Advisory is in effect Wednesday night into Thursday morning for the Rogue, Applegate and Illinois valleys, where localized freezing temperatures are possible. A Freeze Watch is also in place for late Thursday night into Friday morning in parts of Southern Oregon and Northern California.
Conditions are expected to turn drier and warmer Friday and Saturday under a ridge of high pressure. Another weather system could arrive later this weekend into early next week, though details remain uncertain.
