ROSEBURG, Ore. — A 60-year-old man died following a reported stabbing Thursday morning in the area known as “The Point” along SE Pine Street, according to the Roseburg Police Department.

Police said officers and medics were dispatched to the 200 block of SE Pine Street at approximately 8:30 a.m. on January 2, 2026, after receiving a report of a stabbing. When officers arrived, they found James Wade Gage, 60, lying off the bike path with a single stab wound.

Officers and emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but Gage was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police said the suspect, a 16-year-old male, fled the area following the incident and was later located in the South Umpqua River. After a brief standoff, the juvenile was taken into custody without further incident.

The juvenile was lodged at the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of Criminally Negligent Homicide, Menacing, Escape in the Third Degree, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. The juvenile’s name has not been released due to age.

The Roseburg Police Department thanked multiple agencies for their assistance, including the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, Oregon State Police, Douglas County Interagency Narcotics Team, Roseburg Fire Department, and Umpqua Valley Ambulance.

Authorities said no further details are being released at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.
