Major Rehabilitation Completed at Charles V. Stanton County Park

Douglas County is preparing to celebrate the completion of a nearly $4 million, multi-phase rehabilitation project at Charles V. Stanton County Park and Campground in Canyonville.

A public ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Tuesday, September 29, at 1 p.m. at the park, located at 1540 Stanton Park Road.

The project modernized both campgrounds, improved the playground and day-use area, expanded recreational opportunities along the South Umpqua River and restored a familiar piece of the park’s history.

“This rehabilitation has transformed Stanton Park while preserving what makes it special,” Douglas County Parks Director Mark Wall said in a statement. “The improved campground facilities, expanded recreational opportunities, and new river amenities will provide visitors with an even better experience.”

Nearly $4 Million in Improvements

Work at the park was completed through three phases supported by state and federal grants, county funding and community partnerships.

The $485,000 first phase focused on the playground and day-use facilities. Improvements included:

• A new zipline play feature
• Durable rubber playground surfacing
• A new restroom serving the playground and pavilion
• Sidewalk improvements leading to the pavilion
• Rehabilitation of the playground and pavilion parking area

Douglas County received a $242,500 grant through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s County Opportunity Grant Program to help fund the work, which was completed during 2024 and 2025.

A $2.2 million second phase began in fall 2024 and concentrated on the upper campground. Work included additional campsites with full utility hookups, replacement of aging underground utilities, larger sites capable of accommodating modern recreational vehicles and a new restroom and shower building.

That phase was supported by a $975,885.50 grant from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.

The $1.3 million third phase focused on the lower campground and recreational amenities. Improvements included:

• Additional full-hookup campsites
• New underground utilities
• Larger RV sites
• A river access trail
• A new picnic shelter
• Benches overlooking the river

A separate $580,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant awarded in 2023 helped support the third phase.

Historic Helicopter Restored

The rehabilitation also preserved the park’s longtime helicopter play structure, which has been part of childhood memories for generations of Douglas County families.

Douglas County partnered with local business Eveland Sandblasting and Paint to restore the helicopter while retaining its historic character. The county said the work will allow children to continue enjoying the structure safely as the surrounding park receives modern facilities.

“These displays are more than playground equipment,” Douglas County Commissioner and Parks Liaison Chris Boice said. “They are part of the memories of generations of Douglas County families, and we are grateful to have local businesses like Eveland Sandblasting and Paint help us preserve them for the next generation.”

Charles V. Stanton County Park provides camping, day-use facilities and access to the South Umpqua River. The rehabilitation is intended to improve the park for families, campers, RV travelers and other visitors while preserving the features that have made it a longtime local destination.
