A fast-moving, wind-driven grass fire near Roberts Creek Road grew to an estimated 10 acres Sunday afternoon, prompting a second-alarm response as firefighters worked to protect nearby homes. Multiple fire agencies assisted Central Douglas Fire & Rescue.
ROSEBURG, Ore. - A fast-moving grass fire Sunday afternoon prompted a second-alarm response as firefighters worked to stop flames from reaching a nearby home in the Roberts Creek area.
Central Douglas Fire & Rescue (CDF&R) was dispatched at approximately 3:21 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, to a reported grass fire in a field on Ladybug Lane. Initial reports indicated the fire had spread across approximately 2 acres, with a nearby home not yet threatened.
By the time the first fire crew arrived, strong winds had pushed the fire to an estimated 10 acres, with flames moving toward a home on Roberts Creek Road.
Firefighters established command and requested a second alarm to bring additional resources to the scene. Crews moved quickly to stop the fire's forward progress while a separate structure protection division was established to assess and protect nearby homes and buildings.
CDF&R responded with three brush units, two fire engines, two water tenders, and a command vehicle, bringing a total of 15 personnel to the incident.
Additional assistance came from Roseburg Fire, Sutherlin Fire, Lookingglass Fire, and the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA).
CDF&R also thanked Sutherlin Fire Chief McKnight and Roseburg Fire Chief Ronk for providing assistance and resources during the incident, as well as helping cover CDF&R's response area while crews were committed to the fire.
The department did not provide a final acreage, report whether any structures were damaged, or identify the cause of the fire in its initial statement.
