Douglas County ARES Invites Public To NOAA SKYWARN Presentation In Roseburg

ROSEBURG, Ore. — Douglas County Amateur Radio Emergency Services, in partnership with Douglas County Emergency Management, is inviting amateur radio operators and members of the public to attend an upcoming NOAA SKYWARN presentation in Roseburg.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the OSU Extension Auditorium, located at 1134 SE Douglas Ave. in Roseburg. The presentation will feature Joseph Guerrero, lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Medford.

According to organizers, the presentation is open not only to amateur radio operators, but also to anyone in the community interested in learning more about severe weather and emergency communications. Organizers are encouraging attendees to share the announcement widely so more people can take advantage of the opportunity.

SKYWARN programs help train volunteers to recognize and report significant weather conditions, giving the National Weather Service and local agencies more timely information during severe weather events. Local emergency communication volunteers say the training also ties into the broader mission of supporting communications during emergencies when traditional systems may fail.

Douglas County ARES says its mission is to help support emergency communication lifelines in the county if standard methods become ineffective. When activated, ARES members use radio and satellite communications equipment to help ensure critical information continues reaching the appropriate agencies and stakeholders.

The May 19 presentation is expected to last about an hour and a half. Organizers say the general public is welcome to attend.
