Coast Guard Rescues Two People Near Coquille River South Jetty

BANDON, Ore. - Two people were rescued Monday after their boat began taking on water near the Coquille River South Jetty in Bandon.

The U.S. Coast Guard said watchstanders at the Sector Columbia River command center received a 911 relay from North Coos 911 Dispatch at 10:59 a.m. The report involved a 14-foot recreational boat taking on water with two people aboard.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station North Bend was redirected from a nearby training mission. A 47-foot motor lifeboat crew was also launched from Coast Guard Station Coos Bay.

Bandon Fire Department personnel arrived at 11:37 a.m., removed both people from the vessel and helped position them on nearby rocks for a helicopter rescue.

The Coast Guard helicopter reached the scene at 11:53 a.m. and successfully hoisted both people from the rocks. They were taken to a nearby parking lot and transferred to awaiting emergency medical personnel at approximately 12:30 p.m.

“This rescue showcases the unique relationship between the Coast Guard and local agencies, as well as how those relationships are leveraged during emergencies,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Christopher Brady, command duty officer for Coast Guard Sector Columbia River. “Today showcased how the Coast Guard, North Coos 911 Dispatch and Bandon Fire Department can come together to save lives.”
