Back-to-School Bash Returns Aug. 22 at Umpqua Community College
Douglas County's Back-to-School Bash returns Saturday, Aug. 22, at Umpqua Community College with free school supplies, haircuts, lunch, sports physicals, youth vaccines, activities, prizes and more for local families.
ROSEBURG, Ore. - Douglas County families can get ready for the new school year with free school supplies, haircuts, food, health services and a full day of activities during the second annual Back-to-School Bash on Saturday, Aug. 22.
This year's event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Umpqua Community College, moving to a new location after more than 1,600 students and family members attended the inaugural event last year.
The free event is open to Douglas County residents of all ages and is designed to help students and families prepare for the start of school while connecting them with local organizations and resources.
Thrive Umpqua, Aviva Health, Adapt Integrated Health Care, Douglas Education Service District, Roseburg Schools, the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians and Umpqua Health are among the organizations hosting this year's event.
Families will be able to pick up free school supplies while supplies last, and students can enter raffles for prizes including bicycles, scooters, laptops, shoe vouchers and gift cards.
Free haircuts will also be available for students looking for a fresh start before the first day of school.
Lunch will be provided at no cost, with food from Jackson Street Provisions and Smokin' Fridays. Umpqua Dairy ice cream and shave ice from UCC Athletics will also be available.
Umpqua Health will offer no-cost sports physicals and youth vaccinations during the event.
The Bash will include more than 25 student club and team showcases, live performances and activities for children and families ranging from preschool through college age. Planned activities include face painting, caricature drawings, a photo booth, balloon animals, henna tattoos, obstacle courses, a pump track, bike rodeo, soccer, volleyball, pickleball, arrow tag and an unwind zone.
Thundering Waters' WOW Truck will also be on site.
More than 40 community organizations are expected to participate, giving families an opportunity to learn about services and resources available throughout Douglas County.
"No single organization can meet all of a family's needs, but together we can," Thrive Umpqua Executive Director Jess Hand said. "That's why we're proud to help coordinate this event alongside so many partners across schools, healthcare, and our community."
Hand said organizers hope families leave the event with meaningful support and students head into the school year knowing their community is behind them.
Free Transportation Available
Free bus transportation will be offered to the event from four Roseburg-area schools:
- Green Elementary School
- Joseph Lane Middle School
- Eastwood Elementary School
- Roseburg High School
The Back-to-School Bash will take place Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Umpqua Community College.
