80-Year-Old Man Dies in Interstate 5 Crash in Douglas County
An 80-year-old Independence man died Monday night after his vehicle left Interstate 5 near milepost 138 in Douglas County, struck trees, rolled over and caught fire, according to Oregon State Police.
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. - An 80-year-old Independence man died Monday night after his vehicle left Interstate 5 in Douglas County, struck trees and caught fire, according to Oregon State Police.
OSP said troopers responded to the single-vehicle crash at approximately 11:47 p.m. Monday, August 17, on northbound Interstate 5 near milepost 138.
According to a preliminary investigation, a silver Kia Rondo driven by Carl Leslie Earhart, 80, of Independence, was traveling north when it left the roadway for an unknown reason.
The vehicle struck a group of trees, rolled over and caught fire.
Earhart was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
OSP said the highway was not impacted during the investigation.
The Oregon State Police was assisted at the scene by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Sutherlin Police Department, Douglas County Fire District No. 2 and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
