Road To Umpqua Hot Springs Reopens; Visitors Reminded Of Day-Use Rules, Cashless Fees Starting April 1
The road to Umpqua Hot Springs has reopened after a winter closure, but visitors are being reminded the site is day-use only. Camping, overnight use and improper parking are prohibited, and the trailhead will switch to cashless fee collection beginning April 1.
The road to Umpqua Hot Springs has reopened, restoring vehicle access to National Forest System Road 3401 after a winter closure that had been in place since early January, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The closure was originally put in place to prevent vehicles from getting stuck in snow and ice near the popular recreation area.
With easier access returning, forest officials are reminding visitors that the Umpqua Hot Springs area is strictly day-use only. Prohibited activities in and around the site include being there after sundown or before sunrise, camping, and parking or leaving a vehicle in violation of posted instructions. The day-use rules remain in effect through at least April 18, 2026, unless rescinded sooner.
The trailhead also remains a fee site. Forest Service information lists the day-use fee at $5 per vehicle, while the fee is waived for visitors displaying a valid Northwest Forest Pass or Interagency America the Beautiful pass on their vehicle dashboard. The hot springs trail itself is about 0.3 miles and the site is open from sunrise to sunset.
Beginning April 1, the Umpqua Hot Springs Trailhead will transition to cashless fee collection. Visitors planning a trip are being encouraged to either display an America the Beautiful pass or use the Recreation.gov app, create an account, and enter payment information before heading out. The Umpqua National Forest has also posted a broader alert noting that forest-operated developed recreation sites are going cashless starting April 1.
Umpqua Hot Springs, located off Highway 138 east of Roseburg near Toketee, is one of the most visited recreation destinations in the Umpqua National Forest. Forest officials are encouraging visitors to review site rules before visiting and to help protect the area by following posted regulations and Leave No Trace principles.
