ROSEBURG, Ore. — Oregonians can fish, crab and clam without a license during the state’s annual Free Fishing Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14–15, offering a chance for families and first-time anglers to spend time outdoors together.

The two-day event allows anyone to fish statewide without purchasing a license or tags. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says the weekend is intended to introduce new people to fishing and make it easier for families to enjoy Oregon’s waterways.

Free Fishing Weekend is also a good time to try clamming or crabbing. ODFW offers beginner information, maps and tips online for those looking to get started at: https://myodfw.com/crabbing-clamming

While licenses are waived for the weekend, all other regulations still apply. That includes bag limits, size restrictions, area closures and equipment rules. Anglers are encouraged to review current regulations and local conditions before heading out.

Many lakes around the state are typically stocked with trout ahead of the weekend to improve opportunities for kids and new anglers. The free weekend also applies to crabbing and clamming statewide, though shellfish safety advisories and harvest restrictions remain in effect.

ODFW is encouraging families to get outside and share photos from their outings. Participants can submit photos of their trips, catches and time on the water through the agency’s website at:

The agency often highlights submitted photos after the weekend to showcase fishing opportunities across Oregon.
