DENSE FOG ADVISORY THROUGH 9:00 AM. MONDAY

KQEN News Radio

A Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through 9:00 a.m. Monday for a wide area of southwestern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said visibility of one quarter mile or less in dense fog is expected.

The Advisory area includes the Umpqua Basin, Rogue Valley, Illinois Valley and Applegate Valley and applies to Interstate 5, and highways 42, 101, 138. 199 and 238.

Forecasters said low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous. Motorists should slow down and leave plenty of distance ahead of them. Pedestrians and cyclists should wear bright or reflective clothing to increase the chances of being seen by others in poor visibility conditions.

OREGON SENATORS CAST NO VOTE ON MOVE TOWARDS ENDING GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

KQEN News Radio

Oregon’s U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden both cast a no vote Sunday night as the Senate took the first step toward ending the longest shutdown of the federal government in U.S. history.

The legislation, which passed by a 60 to 40 vote, would fund most federal agencies through January and backs down from Democrats central demand to extend Obama Care health care subsidies that are slated to expire at the end of the year.

Ahead of casting his vote on Sunday night, Senator Jeff Merkley said, “The vote tonight to reopen the government with no deal on health care is a brutal blow to all those who have stood togethers to save affordable health care for more than 20 million Americans”. Merkley said, “I strived to stop this outcome. I will vote “NO” tonight with every fiber of my being”.

In a social media post, Senator Ron Wyden said, “My red line has always been lowering health costs for Americans. Donald Trump and Republicans don’t want an agreement that meets that bar. I’m a no”.

Senators are reconvening Monday to continue working towards ending the federal government shutdown.

ROSEBURG CITY COUNCIL WITH BUSY AGENDA FOR MONDAY NIGHT MEETING

KQEN News Radio

The Roseburg City Council has a busy agenda for its meeting Monday night.

Councilors will consider authorizing a change order to the Taxiway Extension Project at the Roseburg Regional Airport. Notes from staff said in April, Knife River Materials began construction of the project. During excavation, materials were encountered below the foundation of the retaining wall that were not consistent with the materials described in the geotechnical report. The material was determined by the geotechnical engineer to be unsuitable for the structural foundation of and backfill immediately adjacent to the retaining wall. Due to the unsuitable material, the structural engineer recommended aggregate material be utilized immediately under and behind the retaining wall.

This increased the quantity of aggregate material used on the project from 400 cubic yards to 958 cubic yards. This increase, along with other minor changes, is shown in the second and final change order, totaling just over $121,000.

The council will vote on resolutions authorizing supplemental budget revisions and appropriation transfers for the current fiscal year. They will also decide on whether to update the city’s fee schedule with mid-year adjustments.

A number of other items are on the agenda as well. The meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the city council chambers on Southeast Douglas Avenue. It can be seen on the city’s Facebook page or viewed later at www.cityofroseburg.org

DOUGLAS COUNTY VETERANS DAY PARADE IS TUESDAY

KQEN News Radio

Douglas County’s Veterans Day Parade is Tuesday.

A county release said the event will be held in downtown Roseburg, starting at 11:00 a.m. Known as Oregon’s Greatest Veterans Day Parade, it has been held every year since 1955.  The theme for this year’s parade is, “1775-2025: 250 Years of Military Excellence”.

The parade will follow the traditional route, starting at the corner of Northeast Fowler Street and Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard. It will turn left onto Northeast Jackson Street which becomes Southeast Jackson Street, then turning left onto Northeast Lane Avenue, left onto Southeast Main Street, right onto Southeast Douglas Avenue and concluding right in front of the Douglas County Courthouse.

The 70th anniversary parade in Roseburg was recognized again this year, as one of only 56 regional Veterans Day parade sites selected as the Top 2024 Veterans Day Observances Across the United States, by the National Veterans Day Committee. The local event has been awarded this honor every year.

INDUSTRIAL SLASH BURNING OPENS MONDAY IN JACKSON/JOSEPHINE COUNTIES

KQEN News Radio

A persistent weather pattern of cooler temperatures and consistent rain has prompted a decrease in restrictions for industrial slash burning effective Monday for the Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District.

As a result, prescribed fire and industrial slash burning may increase in high-elevation, remote areas throughout Jackson and Josephine counties.

ODF Public Information Officer Natalie Weber said these restrictions are specifically for industrial use and are separate from general public debris burning regulations. Weber said before a debris or barrel burn, members of the public should first contact their local fire district for any needed permits, and on the day of the debris burn, contact the appropriate county burn line to confirm that it is a burn day. In Jackson County, call 541-776-7007 and in Josephine County call 541-476-9663.
