Bergin College Seeks Volunteer Puppy Raisers for Four Dogs Needing Homes by Next Week to Help Change Lives

CANYONVILLE, Ore. Bergin College of Canine Studies is seeking volunteer puppy raisers to take four dogs into their homes by next week, saying the placements are urgent because early home-based socialization and structure are essential to a dog’s long-term success in service work.
The dogs needing homes are Trendy (2-year-old male), Zabin (9-month-old female), Antje (5-month-old female) and Amanda (5-month-old female), the college said. The dogs are preparing for potential service careers that may one day support people with physical disabilities and veterans living with PTSD.
The college said the raiser stage matters because it is where dogs learn to navigate everyday life with confidence. That includes routines, sights, sounds and public settings that help build steadiness and resilience. The work is done in volunteer homes because the college does not use kennels to raise future service dogs, according to the announcement.
In addition to building skills, the college said raisers help shape dogs that are bred and selected for purpose and thrive with structure, affection and meaningful work.
Volunteers will receive weekly training classes where they learn to teach basic obedience and beginning tasking skills, the college said. Raisers also receive mentorship and support from instructors, with veterinary care and food provided. The program includes a community of fellow raisers, the college said.

The college also highlighted its roots, noting it was founded by Bonnie Bergin, who the organization said developed the concept of the service dog in 1975 while working with a quadriplegic woman named Carrie and the first service dog, Abdul. The college said Dr. Bergin developed 112 service dog commands designed to support mobility challenges, and those same commands are still taught today.
Those interested are encouraged to apply immediately so placements can be arranged on the short timeline, the college said.

COW CREEK TRIBE WORKING ON FORMER RITE AID BUILDING

The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians are doing rehabilitation work on the former Rite Aid building on Southeast Jackson Street in downtown Roseburg.
Cow Creek Communications and Marketing Director Lindsay Campman told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that crews are currently working on asbestos removal and lead paint mitigation. Campman said the building was neglected for a long time and in order to prepare it for its next phase of life, the Tribe needs to safely remove the materials and perform general facility cleanup.
The next part of the project will be roofing repair, though no timeline for that work has been set.
Campman said the Tribe has combined its funding with a $400,000 grant from Thrive Umpqua and the Oregon Main Street Revitalization program to get the work accomplished for this year. Thrive Umpqua is part of the Oregon Main Street Network and can disburse funds received as they see fit.
Campman said the Tribe is committed to the project for the long haul and staying true to their vision – eventually having a building that is beautiful, is a benefit to the community, and becomes a source of Roseburg pride.
The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians purchased the former Rite Aid building and the adjacent former Safeway lot in June of 2024.
COMMISSIONERS HOST 5TH ANNUAL MUSIC AT THE COURTHOUSE

On Wednesday, Douglas County Commissioners hosted their 5th annual Music at the Courthouse concert series at the Douglas County Courthouse.
A county release said the event featured nine local music programs in celebration of National Music in our Schools Month. The commissioners issued a proclamation prior to the first performance declaring March as Music in our Schools month in Douglas County. A copy of the proclamation was presented to each of the schools attending prior to their performance.
This year it was another large turnout of music programs showcasing their musical talents for two and a half hours. 211 local students, aged six to eighteen, under the direction of their teachers, gathered at the courthouse.
A copy of the proclamation presentation, as well as recordings of the live performances of all nine musical groups is posted on the county government Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/DouglasCountyeGovernment

H.O.P.E. DRUG COURT PROJECTS CONCLUDE THIS WEEK

The 112th class of the H.O.P.E. Drug Court program is wrapping up its community service projects this week, marking the culmination of hard work, recovery, and community engagement.
Nathan Sessions will host a community spaghetti feed fundraiser Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Liberty Christian Fellowship, at 831 Southeast Lane Avenue in downtown Roseburg. A free play will take place at 6:00 p.m. for those who would like to enjoy dinner followed by the performance. The cost is $10 per person and includes spaghetti, bread, dessert and a beverage. Proceeds from the event will benefit Chadwick Clubhouse, a local nonprofit dedicated to serving adults living with mental illness.
This project aims to help Chadwick Clubhouse replace its aging van, which currently has 300,000 miles and is no longer reliable. Reliable transportation ensures members who are unable to drive can consistently attend programming and access critical services. To assist with the purchase of a gently used replacement van, a campaign has been launched. To make a donation, go to: https://gofund.me/1e70e549c.
On Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Kevin Davidson will complete the final phase of his three-part community project in partnership with Thrive Umpqua. His efforts included cleaning and repairing the damaged Gateway Community Garden at the Roseburg Senior Center on Southeast Stephens Street, collecting cans to raise funds for the “Eating Healthy on a Budget” class serving individuals at Adapts’ Progress Point, and now leading a cleanup along the bike path from the duck pound to the Umpqua Valley Tennis Center along Northwest Stewart Parkway.
H.O.P.E. Drug Court will hold its next graduation on March 31st at 5:15 p.m. in the Cascade Hall building at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
