Roseburg Benefit Car Show Draws Crowd for 47th Annual Weekend Supporting Local Causes
ROSEBURG, Ore. — Classic cars, longtime tradition and community giving came together this weekend as the 47th Annual Roseburg Benefit Car Show filled the Douglas County Fairgrounds with polished builds, familiar faces and support for two local causes.
Hosted by the Umpqua Flatheads and the Stray Angels Car Club, the indoor show featured about 70 classic and custom vehicles as attendees spent the weekend checking out the cars, visiting with fellow enthusiasts and supporting a fundraiser that has become a longtime Roseburg tradition.
The event also included a 50-50 drawing, prize giveaways and trophy presentations after the close of the show.
We interviewed Larry Wheeler, vice president of the Umpqua Flatheads and co-chair of the Benefit Car Show Committee, who said the event is organized each year by the Umpqua Flatheads, the Stray Angels Car Club and a small group of dedicated volunteers.
“It’s a committee of just 10 people that put this show on every single year,” Wheeler said.
Wheeler said the show began in 1977 when two members of the Umpqua Flatheads decided they wanted to create a car show that would raise money for local charities.
“If I remember correctly, in 1977, two guys from the Umpqua Flatheads decided that they wanted to put on a benefit show, a car show, to benefit local charities here in Roseburg,” Wheeler said. “In three weeks, they put this entire show together.”
That original mission remains at the center of the event today. This year’s beneficiaries are Douglas County Search and Rescue and the Special Materials Fund for handicapped kids in Douglas County.
One representative at the show said the fundraiser plays a vital role in helping local children with special needs.
“This is our only source of income other than a few private donations,” she said. “Special Materials purchases equipment for kids with special needs.”
She said the support from the car show has made a difference for decades.
“The Car Club has been donating to Special Materials to help handicapped kids in Douglas County for 50 years,” she said. “We’re the last resort. If nobody else can help them, we help them.”
For many attendees, the show is about more than just the vehicles on display. It is also about community, tradition and the people who gather around a shared passion.
One attendee said the event stands out not only because of the cars, but because of the atmosphere.
“A lot of nice-looking cars, but a lot of really nice people, too,” he said. “It’s a great community, and it’s for a good purpose.”
Another attendee said the show feels like the unofficial start of car-show season in Roseburg.
“It’s the start of the season,” she said. “Being born and raised in Roseburg, Graffiti Weekend’s huge, so we all love classics. This just means the season is about ready to hit.”
That connection to local car culture continues to make the Roseburg Benefit Car Show a meaningful annual event for participants and spectators alike.
For some, it is simply part of who they are.
“We’re car people,” one participant said. “That’s all we’ve ever done. We build cars. My brother puts on the car show in Medford, so cars are our life.”
As another year of the Roseburg Benefit Car Show comes to a close, the event once again showed why it has remained a fixture in the community for nearly five decades - bringing people together through a shared love of classic cars while helping support important local causes.

Canyonville Library To Host Meet-And-Greet With Congressional Candidate Dawn Rasmussen

CANYONVILLE, Ore. — The Canyonville Community Library will host a public meet-and-greet with Dawn Rasmussen, a Democratic candidate for Oregon’s 2nd Congressional District, on Wednesday, March 18, at 6 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The event is scheduled to take place at the library, 250 N. Main St. in Canyonville.
The event is intended to give community members a chance to hear directly from Rasmussen, ask questions and discuss issues affecting the district. Library organizers say the gathering is part of their broader effort to encourage civic engagement and community dialogue.
Library officials said the organization remains nonpartisan and does not endorse political parties, candidates or partisan causes. Instead, the library says its role is to provide information, promote civic participation and create space for respectful conversation among people with different viewpoints.
Rasmussen is one of the Democratic candidates running in Oregon’s 2nd Congressional District in the 2026 election cycle.
For more information, community members can contact the Canyonville Community Library or visit its website.
Canyonville Community Library Launches Spring Raffle To Support Programs And Services

CANYONVILLE, Ore. — The Canyonville Community Library is inviting the community to take part in a spring raffle fundraiser aimed at supporting library programs, services and resources.
The raffle features 25 prize packages donated by local businesses and community members, with a wide variety of items available. Organizers say prizes include a staycation at Seven Feathers Casino Resort, a handmade quilt, children’s prize packages, dining gift cards, spa items, a Samsung tablet and even 15 bales of clover hay.
Tickets are available both online and in person at the library during regular open hours. The fundraiser is set up as a choice raffle, allowing winners to select which prize packages they want entered for a chance to win.
Prize packages can be viewed on the library’s website or in person at the Canyonville Community Library, located at 250 N. Main St. Ticket package prices range from $5 to $40.
The drawing will be held Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 3 p.m. during the library’s spring book sale. Online ticket sales will close April 9, while in-person sales will continue at the library until 1 p.m. on the day of the drawing.
Library officials say the raffle is a way for residents to support local library programs while also having a chance to win prizes.

Winston VFW To Host 2nd Annual 4th Of July Car Show And Vendor Event

WINSTON, Ore. — The Winston VFW will celebrate Independence Day with an expanded 2nd Annual 4th of July Car Show and Vendor Event on Saturday, July 4, bringing together classic vehicles, motorcycles, shopping, music and community activities at VFW Amos R. Osborne Post 9745.
The event will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 570 W. Douglas Blvd. in Winston. Organizers say this year’s show will feature more vehicles, a larger vendor section and additional community elements as the nation marks its 250th birthday.
Jennifer Scott, event coordinator and social media administrator for the Winston VFW, said the post is building on last year’s event in a bigger way.
“As our nation celebrates its 250th birthday, we’re pulling out all the stops,” Scott said. “Expect more cars, more vendors, more shopping, and a meaningful presentation ceremony that highlights the spirit of our community and our veterans.”
Scott said the event’s location on the spacious ball field behind the post gives organizers room to expand both the car show and the vendor area. Set along the South Umpqua River, the venue offers scenic views while accommodating a wide range of entries, including motorcycles.
“Our car show takes place on the spacious ball field behind the post, giving us plenty of room for a huge variety of vehicles and vendors,” Scott said. “The space sits right along the South Umpqua River, offering beautiful views throughout the event. We welcome every type of rig - including motorcycles - so attendees get to enjoy an impressive range of vehicles they won’t find at more restrictive shows. This year, we’re expanding our vendor section with even more booths and even more opportunities for attendees to shop, explore, and support local makers.”
The Winston VFW had 47 vehicles participate last year and hopes to double that number this year.
Admission for the public is free. Vehicle registration is $20, while vendor spaces are $25. Nonprofit organizations can participate at no charge.
In addition to the show and vendor booths, organizers plan to feature classic music from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, along with a 50/50 raffle. A special opening ceremony is also in the works, though organizers said that portion has not yet been finalized.
Scott said the event is about more than showcasing vehicles.
“Our car show is more than a display of classic cars; it’s an opportunity to reinforce the Winston VFW’s presence and purpose for the next generation, ensuring that our mission and our veterans remain a visible part of our community,” Scott said.
She said attendees will also be able to learn more about how the Winston VFW supports veterans in the community, how to become a member and how to support the organization’s mission.
Organizers are also seeking verified artists, crafters, direct sales representatives and nonprofit organizations interested in participating as vendors. Vendor spaces are outdoors and available rain or shine. Vendors must provide their own tables, chairs and canopies.
Those interested in becoming a vendor can email surferwbvmc@yahoo.com for more information.

CHI MERCY HEALTH NAMED A TOP RURAL AND COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

CHI Mercy Health Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg was recently named one of the top 20 rural and community hospitals in the country.
A Mercy release said the National Rural Health Association has announced the 20 highest-ranked prospective payment system hospitals in the country based on an evaluation by the Chartis Center for Rural Health. The hospitals are identified using the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX, the most comprehensive assessment of rural PPS hospital performance.
The determining factors for the Top 20 rural and community hospitals are based on eight indices: inpatient market share, outpatient market share, quality, outcomes, patient perspective, cost, charge, and finance.
Mercy Health Market President Russ Wooley said, “This distinguished designation as a Top Rural Community Hospital is a monumental source of great pride for every member of our Mercy team”. Wooley said, “We view this prestigious recognition not just as an accolade, but as a direct reflection of the unwavering dedication, clinical experience, and heartfelt compassion exhibited daily by our exceptional staff, physicians and committed volunteers, all of whom made this remarkable achievement possible”.
Wooley said, “Attaining this level of recognition is incredibly significant for our patients and the entire community we serve. Being named a top healthcare provider by a rigorous national assessment assures our community members that they can place their complete confidence and reliability on us for consistently high-quality, comprehensive healthcare services”.
