DOUGLAS COUNTY MORNING NEWS
FREEZING FOG ADVISORY THROUGH 12:00 P.M. FRIDAY

A Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect through 12:00 p.m. Friday for much of southern Oregon.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said visibility of one quarter mile or less in freezing fog is expected.
The Advisory area includes central Douglas County, eastern Curry County, and Josephine and Jackson counties.
Drivers should slow down, use their headlights and leave plenty of distance ahead of them.
AIR STAGNATION ADVISORY 10:00 A.M. FRIDAY THROUGH 10:00 A.M. SUNDAY

An Air Stagnation Advisory remains in effect from Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. within the valleys of much of southern Oregon.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said poor air quality will continue. This is due to an inversion and stagnant air conditions near the surface that will continue to trap pollutants. A strong area of high pressure will build in through Saturday, then weaken slightly on Sunday. This will lead to poor mixing of the atmosphere and the trapping of pollutants. The high is likely to strengthen again early next week.
The Advisory area includes central Douglas County, eastern Curry County and Josephine and Jackson counties.
Poor air quality may cause issues for people with respiratory problems. Most outdoor burning will likely be prohibited as poor ventilation develops.

SENATOR MERKLEY TOWN HALL IN ROSEBURG SATURDAY

Oregon’s U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley will have a town hall in Douglas County on Saturday.
The event is part of Senator Merkley’s first round of in-person community conversations happening in western Oregon through Sunday.
Senator Merkley holds town hall meetings in each of Oregon’s thirty-six counties every year.
The Douglas County town hall will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Southern Oregon Wine Institute at Umpqua Community College in Winchester. Senator Merkley said he will open the meeting with brief remarks but wants the focus to be on hearing from residents about their concerns regarding the federal government. The event is expected to last just over one hour.
ROSEBURG TRACTOR SUPPLY SET TO OPEN IN MARCH

Tractor Supply is set to open its Roseburg store in March, staying right on the schedule the company announced in November.
A TSC spokesperson told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that a soft opening is scheduled for March 21st with a grand opening on March 28th.
The store will be in North Roseburg Plaza on Northeast Stephens Street, just south of Northeast Garden Valley Boulevard. Tractor Supply sells pet and livestock supplies, farm and ranch essentials, tools and hardware, lawn and garden equipment, workwear and seasonal products for rural and outdoor lifestyles.
Work to get the building ready has been going on for several weeks. That included new paint outside, and paint and remodeling work inside. The store will be in the former location of Big Lots, which closed in January of 2025.
Store hours will be 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. except on Sunday when the business will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The new store will provide about fifteen new jobs in the area, with at least half of those being full-time positions. Interested applicants can go to: www.tractorsupply.com/careers for more information.
Tractor Supply stores are already located in Sutherlin and Myrtle Creek. At last report the company operated over 2,360 stores in 49 states.
DISCOVER ROSEBURG GEOCACHING KICK-OFF EVENT FEBRUARY 7TH

Roseburg’s next geocaching series launches on Saturday February 7th.
A city release said hosted by Roseburg Parks and Recreation, the Discover Roseburg 15 Land of Umpqua Geocache Series kick-off is a free, family-friendly event designed to draw people of all ages outside to experience more of the city and its businesses. The kick-off will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Roseburg Public Library, where parks staff will give out verbal instructions and coordinate the passports for the geocaching treasure hunt.
The event will be held regardless of the weather.
Parks and Recreation Coordinator Tracy David said, “Geocaching is a great activity for families. It is like a game you can take with you wherever you go. Whether you are out running errands in town or on a vacation in another country, there are always geocaches waiting to be found”.
Participants should bring a smart phone or other device with a Global Positioning System, or satellite-based radio navigation system. Using a GPS to follow coordinates printed on passports, they will hunt for five real-world geocaches, or small containers, hidden around town, plus fifteen virtual geocaches at special locations. Geocachers will navigate to all the spots and fill out their passports along the way.
The kick-off will feature an “Ask the Expert” table staffed by Mike Baker, a former Roseburg City Councilor and Parks and Recreation Commission chairperson, who first suggested a geocaching event begin in Roseburg to draw visitors.
Those who find all twenty geocaches in the Discover Roseburg 15 challenge can redeem passports for a limited-edition collector’s geocoin, with a trackable ID number. Only two hundred are available. The challenge continues until all geocoins are awarded. Participants don’t have to turn in passports on the opening day. They can complete passports on their own time.
For more information on the Discover Roseburg geocaching events, call 492-6899 or email: tdavid@roseburgor.gov.

A district release said all Roseburg-area families with children ages 2 to 4 are invited to sign up for “Literacy, Lines, & Letters”. It will be a fun family evening of exploring literacy through play, featuring hands-on stations, interactive storytelling and simple activities families can replicate at home.
The event will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Rose Elementary School on Southeast Roberts Avenue. Registration is required as space is limited. Families can sign up to attend at: https://forms.gle/XP5MTu1JSnLEdgYC&

The district was awarded $1.1 million for the duration of the grant timelines to ensure all students, especially those who need the most support, benefit from the latest evidence-based, effective reading instruction starting in the earliest grades. The grant from the U.S. Department of Education aligns with Oregon’s Early Literacy Success Initiative.
The goal behind the district’s series of events for families with 2- to 4-year-olds is to help more children enter kindergarten with the skills needed to thrive in their reading development.
