Umpqua Watersheds to Host Guided Snowshoe Hike at Crater Lake National Park on Feb. 14

Umpqua Watersheds will host a guided snowshoe hike at Crater Lake National Park on Saturday, Feb. 14. The outing is limited to 25 participants and requires advance reservation.
Participants can reserve a spot online at:
https://umpquawatersheds.org/mc-events/crater-lake-snowshoe-hike/
Travel and meetup details
Those traveling from Douglas County will meet at 8 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot east of the Roseburg Public Library. The group will depart promptly at 8:15 a.m.
A stop is planned at Diamond Lake Resort around 10 a.m. for restroom and store access before continuing to Crater Lake. Arrival at the Visitor Center is expected around 11:30 a.m., allowing time for lunch before the hike.
Anyone meeting the group at the park should gather at the top floor of Rim Village at 12:30 p.m. The group will meet with park rangers to receive snowshoes at about 1 p.m. near the lodge area before heading out.
Parking, fuel and entrance
Parking at Crater Lake is limited, and organizers ask participants to carpool when possible. Drivers should arrive with a full tank of fuel, as fueling options are limited in the area.
The trip itself is free. When entering the park, participants should tell gate staff they are with the Umpqua Watersheds group and may be admitted without charge, though visitors are advised to be prepared to pay the entrance fee if needed.
What participants should bring
Attendees are asked to bring:
- A sack lunch
- Warm winter clothing
- Good winter boots
- Snowshoes, if they have them
- Ski poles (recommended for balance)
Snowshoes will be provided by park rangers for use during the hike but must be returned afterward.
Crater Lake National Park requires all vehicles to carry tire chains, and drivers must install them if conditions require. Cell service in the park is limited.
Participants are encouraged to gather for a group photo before the hike. Food can be eaten inside the Rim Village Café, which has seating available for larger groups.
Questions about the trip can be directed to Kasey at:

Multi-Jurisdictional Training Exercise Planned for Downtown Roseburg on Feb. 10

A large-scale emergency response training exercise is scheduled to take place in downtown Roseburg on Tuesday, Feb. 10, involving the Roseburg Fire Department and multiple partner agencies.
The drill will simulate a hazardous materials incident involving a train car and is designed to test coordination between local, state, and regional responders. Agencies participating include Douglas County Emergency Management and other emergency response partners from across the region.
Officials say residents and visitors may notice a visible emergency response presence during the exercise, including fire apparatus, law enforcement vehicles, personnel in protective gear, and simulated response operations in the downtown area.
Authorities emphasize that this is only a training exercise and that there is no real emergency or hazardous materials threat to the public.
The purpose of the exercise is to provide realistic, hands-on training for first responders in a controlled environment and to strengthen coordination between agencies in the event of a complex incident involving hazardous materials and multiple jurisdictions.
Community members are asked to remain aware of the scheduled drill and avoid the immediate training area if possible. Officials also request that the public not call 9-1-1 about the simulated activity unless there is an actual emergency.
The Roseburg Fire Department says these exercises are an important part of maintaining readiness and ensuring responders are prepared to protect the community during real incidents.
For more information, residents can contact the City of Roseburg Fire Department at 541-492-6770.
Cellars & Gifts in Roseburg Announces Closure After 25 Years

A longtime downtown Roseburg boutique has announced it will close after 25 years in business, thanking the community for decades of support and memories.
Cellars & Gifts, a locally loved shop known for specialty gifts, home décor and children’s items, shared the news with customers in a heartfelt message this week. Owners said the decision comes after “25 wonderful years” serving the community and expressed deep gratitude to the customers who supported the store over the years.
To mark the final weeks, the shop is holding a storewide closing sale with 30% off most items, inviting customers to stop in, shop remaining inventory, and say goodbye. The business also encouraged community members to visit even if just to share memories and well-wishes.
For many Roseburg residents, Cellars & Gifts has been a go-to destination for unique presents, seasonal décor and specialty items. Over the years, it became a familiar stop for holiday shopping, baby gifts and local finds.
The owners said they are thankful for the opportunity to be part of the community for so long and for the relationships built with customers across generations. No official closing date has been announced, but the farewell sale is now underway. Community members are encouraged to visit the store in the coming weeks to take advantage of the closing discounts and to thank the owners for their years of service to Roseburg.
Sutherlin-Based Ragin’ Reptiles Supply Expanding to Roseburg with Second Storefront

A Sutherlin-based reptile and exotic pet supply shop is expanding into Roseburg with plans to open a second storefront next month.
Ragin’ Reptiles Supply LLC announced on Feb. 2 that it will open its second location in Roseburg, with a planned opening date of March 2, 2026. Owners shared the news on social media, thanking customers who have supported the business since it first opened in Sutherlin.
“We are SO excited to announce that we are opening our second location!!!” the business wrote in its announcement. “We will be opening our second location in Roseburg!! The planned open date is 3/2/26! We appreciate all of our wonderful customers who have made this possible!!”
The family-owned shop offers reptiles, feeders, habitats and related supplies and has built a customer base across Douglas County. Owners say they plan to share progress updates and photos as they prepare the new Roseburg storefront for opening.
“Continue to follow us through the next part of our journey and keep updated on the progress of the new shop!!” the post continued.
The Roseburg location will mark the company’s second retail store since launching in Sutherlin. Additional details about the new storefront and grand opening are expected to be shared through the business’s social media channels in the coming weeks.
CITY COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER LEGAL FEE REMIMBURSEMENTS: PARKS ITEMS

The Roseburg City Council will consider legal fee reimbursements, and two parks and recreation items as part of its Monday night meeting.
Back in November, the council discussed considering a policy for reimbursing legal fees related to Oregon Government Ethics Commission ethics complaints that are ultimately dismissed. At the January 26th meeting, staff presented a policy for council consideration. By consensus, the council tabled the matter to allow for additional time to review the draft and propose edits. The issue before the council is whether to include the proposed edits and adopt a resolution adopting the policy.
The council will vote on authorizing the city manager to execute a grant agreement with Umpqua Health Alliance in the amount of $666,320 for the Fir Grove Field Improvement Project. This will go towards an estimated $3 million project to convert two soccer fields at Fir Grove Park to artificial turf and add lighting, perimeter fencing, and ADA accessible viewing areas at each field.
Councilors will vote on awarding the Sunshine Park Trails Expansion Project to Nature Bound Construction for just over $293,000. The project will construct 2.9 miles of trails at Sunshine Park for walking, biking and other trail uses. The city received Oregon Parks and Recreation Department funding for the project in 2021, but it was delayed when the city was denied a conditional use permit by Douglas County. The property was eventually annexed into the city and appropriately zoned for park use.
The council will start at 6:30 p.m. with a special meeting to interview Daniel Prather and Katherine Brower for vacant seats on the Planning Commission.
The regular meeting will begin at 7:00 p.m. Meetings are held in the council chambers on Southeast Douglas Avenue. They can be viewed on the city’s Facebook page or seen later at https://roseburgor.gov/
ROXY’S PAWS OF HOPE SUPPORTS SAVING GRACE HUMANE SOCIETY

A Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court graduate phase participant is giving back to the community through Roxy’s Paws of Hope, a community project benefitting Saving Grace Humane Society.
A Douglas County Circuit Court release said the project is focused on collecting cans of wet dog and cat food and regular pet food to help restock Saving Grace’s mobile pet food bank, which serves local families by parking at Stewart Park twice each month and participating in the First Thursday community events. Cyn Demers of Saving Grace Humane Society said, “We’re incredibly grateful to be part of a community that shows up for animals in so many ways”. Demers said, “When people choose to support shelter pets through efforts life this, it strengthens our work and makes a lasting difference for the animals who are counting on us every day”
In addition to physical donations, Saving Grace has added an online donation page to allow community members to contribute financially to support the project. H.O.P.E. Drug Court graduate phase participant Zach Smith said, “When I lost my dog Roxy, I realized my life needed to change”. Smith said, ‘Saving Grace helped me when I was at my lowest. This is my way of trying to give back to them and honor Roxy”.
Dog and cat food donations can be dropped off at the DC Farmers Co-op or Clint Newell Auto Group, both on Northeast Stephens Street in Roseburg. Financial donations will be accepted at both locations as well.
Douglas County H.O.P.E. Drug Court will celebrate its 112th graduation on Tuesday, March 31st at 5:15 p.m. in Cascade Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
